The 2019 champion, Barbados Tridents, conclude their 2020 Caribbean Premier League season against one of the two teams they have beaten in their miserable title defence, Jamaica Tallawahs. The match takes place at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy on September 5 and the live action starts at 14:15 local time.
Jamaica were below par with the bat when these teams last met but they have seven points so far – three wins and a tropical thunderstorm-enforced no result last time out – to ensure they have improved on last year and return to the play-offs. Glenn Phillips’ batting has been a central tenet of their form.
Barbados, on the other hand, have not won since their victory against the Tallawahs due to some pathetic batting displays. They lost to high-flying Trinbago next up but have since scored 89/7 – chasing 93 to win – and then 92 and 89/9 in their last two games. Unsurprisingly, they find themselves well off the pace.

For a third consecutive match in CPL 2020, Barbados Tridents fell embarrassingly short with the bat last time out. They hit 89/7 chasing just 93 to beat St Lucia Zouks before scores of 92 and 89/9 in back-to-back matches against Guyana Amazon Warriors both resulted in big defeats.

Jamaica are one of just two teams to have lost to the Tridents so far this season. Kyle Mayers smashed 85 in a total of 148/7 – despite Mujeeb Ur Rahman’s 3-14 – and the Tallawahs struggled to just 112/9 in reply. It is the reverse of last year, when Barbados were the only team to lose to the Tallawahs – and did so twice.

The Tridents are in dreadful form and it is no surprise at all to find Jamaica Tallawahs are big favourites for this match.
Jamaica Tallawahs have qualified for the play-offs and, with the Tridents in such dismal batting form, they can earn a win to build some momentum too.
Wicket-keeper(s)
Glenn Phillips is a key batsman for Jamaica Tallawahs and comes in at the same price as one of the Tridents’ key top-order men, Johnson Charles. They are both 9.5 credits and both worth selecting.
Batsmen
Kyle Mayers is 8.5 credits, while Asif Ali is the same price. Mayers has significantly outscored Ali, but the former’s runs have dried up. Both are still good-value picks, however, as is Nkrumah Bonner at just eight credits. He was touted to open last time too – though rain means we may never know.
All-rounder(s)
Andre Russell is 10.5 credits and a key pick, though West Indies captain Jason Holder has outscored him so fa and comes in at a full credit cheaper. There are then two good options at nine credits – Mitchell Santner and Carlos Brathwaite. If you pick the latter, the choice then comes down to Santner or Johnson Charles as the second wicket-keeper.
Bowlers
Regardless, you still have enough credits for the Afghan spin kings, Rashid Khan for Barbados and Mujeeb Ur Rahman for Jamaica, at 9.5 credits each. It only leaves eight credits, so not enough for Sandeep Lamichhane, but Veerasammy Permaul or Nyeem Young could round your team off.
Captain/vice-captain:
Jason Holder has contributed consistently despite Barbados’ poor form and he could be a good captain choice. Mujeeb Ur Rahman’s weight of wickets make him a worthy vice-captain, meanwhile.
