Ireland Team News & Playing 11

IRE Team News

Lorcan Tucker, Tyrone Kane and Barry McCarthy were the three players to miss out in the first game of the series and, after victory, Ireland could stick with largely the same line-up. James McCollum’s place appears to be in the greatest danger – in four ODI innings, he is still yet to pass five. That could open the door for Tucker to return, though Gary Wilson will likely retain the gloves. If Tucker does come back, William Porterfield might return to the opening slot despite his good form down the order.

IRE Key Players

Paul Stirling’s excellent batting form continued in the first match of this series, as he hit a top score of 71 from 94 balls in Ireland’s total of 210. His last three ODI innings have been worth 77, 130 and 71 runs respectively.

That century, against Bangladesh in Dublin, was Stirling’s eighth of his ODI career and he now has 20 half-centuries too.

Andy Balbirnie fell short last time out, but he too has been in good form – not least with his unbeaten 145 during the last series with Afghanistan in Dehradun. More recently, he scored 135 against West Indies at Malahide and has four ODI centuries in total.

William Porterfield has scored 94 and 53 in his last two innings, meanwhile. Ireland’s top ODI run scorer has 11 centuries in the format in total, while those two most recent knocks means he has 17 half-centuries too.

Mark Adair was the main man with the ball in the first ODI, meanwhile. He claimed 4-19 from 6.4 overs – comfortably his best figures so far.

The more experienced duo of Tim Murtagh (2-12) and Boyd Rankin (3-40) were also in top form. Rankin also took five wickets in the two matches he played in the Tri-Nation Series and he now has 100 in his ODI career, from 69 matches.

IRE Team Form

Ireland made their mark at the Tri-Nation Series, posting scores of 327/5 and 292/8 in their final two games, but they failed to defend either as they suffered three defeats in their three completed games.

They also lost to England beforehand, after being bowled out for 198 – eventually losing by four wickets after giving their world’s number one ODI team a brief scare early in the chase.

Ireland’s win in the first game of this series, therefore, was their first since they beat Afghanistan in Dehradun – chasing 217 to win the final game by five wickets and tie the series.

Ireland Predicted Playing 11

Paul Stirling, William Porterfield, Andy Balbirnie, Lorcan Tucker, Kevin O’Brien, Gary Wilson, George Dockrell, Mark Adair, Tim Murtagh, Andrew McBrine, Boyd Rankin

Afghanistan Team News & Playing 11

AFG Team News

Hamid Hassan, Noor Ali, Samiullah Shenwari and Najibullah Zadran could all come into the team as Afghanistan fine-tune their World Cup preparations. Hassan and Zadran both featured against Scotland, but Ali and Shenwari are yet to play since the World Cup was announced.

AFG Key Players

Even in defeat, Rashid Khan showcased his quality by taking 2-41 with the ball in the first game and hitting two sixes in his 11-ball innings too. Khan is top of the ODI all-rounder rankings and took 17 wickets in 15 appearances at the IPL prior to this series.

Afghanistan are blessed with all-round talent, with Mohammad Nabi also ranked in the top five in the world and arriving on the back of T20 successes across the globe (though he may be one of the players rotated out).

Higher up the batting order, Mohammad Shahzad scored 55 in the win against Scotland, while Rahmat Shah hit 113 to follow up his scores of 98 and 76 in the test win against Ireland.

Joining Khan in the bowling attack, meanwhile, Aftab Alam followed up his two wickets against Scotland with 3-28 last time out. Mujeeb Ur Rahman went wicketless, but the teenager’s spin-bowling has already marked him as a star for the future too.

AFG Team Form

Afghanistan’s good form has continued since they qualified for the World Cup, including a 2-1 series win and 2-2 draw in their last two meetings with Ireland. In between, they reached the second group stage of the Asia Cup – beating Sri Lanka and Bangladesh and tying with India along the way.

Ahead of this series, Rahmat Shah’s century earned a rain-affected win against Scotland – Afghanistan were 269/3 from 44.5 overs in reply to 325/7 and won by two runs on the DLS method.

Defeat to Ireland in the first match in Belfast, however – after they were bowled out for just 138 chasing 211 to win – has put their recent good record in danger.

Afghanistan Predicted Playing 11

Mohammad Shahzad, Hazratullah Zazai, Rahmat Shah, Najibullah Zadran, Noor Ali, Samiullah Shenwari, Gulbadin Naib, Rashid Khan, Hamid Hassan, Aftab Alam, Mujeeb Ur Rahman

Ireland vs Afghanistan Head to Head

Having risen up through the cricketing ranks together in recent years, Afghanistan have met Ireland more than any other ODI opponent. Ireland’s win in the first match of this series means they now have 13 wins in 26 matches, while Afghanistan have 12 with one no result.

Mark Adair’s bowling proved the difference in Belfast, whereas they drew their last series – played in Dehradun, India. Ireland were bowled out for 161 and 114 to lose the first and fourth matches respectively, while the second game ended in no result. Andy Balbirnie’s unbeaten 145 earned them victory in the third ODI, however, before Balbirnie (68) and Paul Stirling (70) helped them chase 217 to tie the series with a five-wicket win in the final game.

For Ireland, Paul Stirling made the difference in the first game and is in excellent form. Stirling is 3.75 with Bet365 to be their best batsman. For Afghanistan, it is no surprise to see Rashid Khan is big favourite to be their top bowler – the spinner is 2.20 with Bet365. In the wickets last time out, Aftab Alam can be backed at 5.50.

🏆 Ireland vs Afghanistan Prediction

Ireland bowled superbly to win the first ODI but both these teams remain inconsistent. Afghanistan can bounce back to form and sign off for the World Cup with a win in Belfast.
