With KL Rahul still unavailable through injury, and Virat Kohli ruled out of the whole series, Devdutt Padikkal, who has only played T20Is for his country, has been called up to the squad. Shreyas Iyer has been left out of the squad but Ravindra Jadeja is expected to come back after his hamstring injury ruled him out of the second Test.

- Ravichandran Ashwin- the spinner went wicketless in the first innings of the second Test but he has taken a three wicket haul in each of the other three innings in the series.
- Jasprit Bumrah- the 30 year old pace bowler has already taken 15 wickets in this series and returned figures of 6/45 and 3/46 in Vizag.

Shoaib Bashir made his Test debut in Vizag and took four wickets across the game but he is expected to make way for a return of pace bowler Mark Wood in Rajkot. Rehan Ahmed is another option to drop out but his superior batting is likely to mean he retains his spot.
