IND vs AUS 1st T20 Match Prediction & Betting Tips
Only four days after the two countries met each other in the final of the 2023 Cricket World Cup, India and Australia resume their rivalry with the first game of a three-match T20I series on Thursday evening in Visakhapatnam. India last played this format during October in the Asia Games although with a young and inexperienced side. Australia’s last T20I match was in early September. Read on as we preview this clash. The fixture gets underway at the ACA-VDCA Stadium at 19:00 local time.
Although India were unable to beat Australia in the final on Sunday, their overall performances were by far the best of any team during the 2023 Cricket World Cup and the strength in depth available to them is very impressive. Although they do not have a large proportion of their top players, they still have plenty of exciting players to call upon.
It will be interesting to see how many of Australia’s World Cup winners are selected for this XI although there are plenty of new players to bring some new energy into the team. Australia are always a strong opposition and they will fancy their chances of getting off to a winning start in this series.

IND vs AUS Match Toss Prediction
This will be only the third T20I to be played at the ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium with two matches won by the team fielding first and the other by the team batting first. With higher humidity in the second half of the match, we predict that both captains will choose to field first.
IND vs AUS Pitch Report
There is always some spin in this pitch but in humid conditions we can also expect the ball to swing a good deal. Any score above 165 will be competitive on this surface.
Visakhapatnam Weather Report
The forecast is for clear skies with some periodic clouds on Thursday evening in Visakhapatnam. The temperature will be in the mid-high 20s from start to finish with the humidity level reaching 80%+ by the end.

India Team News & Playing 11
IND Team News
Of the team who played in Sunday’s final of the 2023 Cricket World Cup, we can expect only the skipper of this side, Suryakumar Yadav, to also take the field in this game. Overall there is a very youthful feel to the squad with all the players hoping to press for a place in the 2024 T20 World Cup squad in June.
IND Key Players
- Suryakumar Yadav - The 33 year old captain did not get many opportunities during the recent World Cup but is far more comfortable in this format and will bat with no fear. Suryakumar has scored 1841 runs in 53 T20Is out of which 115 runs in 3 matches came against Australia. He has a strike rate of 185.48 against the Aussies in T20Is.
- Yashasvi Jaiswal - The young left-handed opener has already made a century in both T20I and Test cricket. A very impressive record considering he only made his international debut in July. This will be the first time he will be facing Australia in T20Is. Yashasvi has scored 232 runs in 8 matches so far at an impressive strike rate of 161.11.
- Arshdeep Singh - The left-arm pace bowler will swing the ball early on in the innings before focusing on yorker length deliveries later on. He has a strike-rate of 13.5 in T20Is. He has picked 54 wickets so far and he has picked wickets against almost all the big names of international cricket except Australia. This will be his first match against Aussies.
- Ravi Bishnoi - The spinner will have watched the Cricket World Cup and seen how the likes of Adam Zampa caught the eye. This is his opportunity to make sure he is in the India squad for the next big tournament. Bishnoi has picked 25 wickets in 16 matches and has bowled at an impressive economy of 6.81.
- Ishan Kishan - Ishan Kishan did not get opportunities to play the Cricket World Cup but he will be a key batsman in the short format. He will be looking forward to cementing his place in the T20I team for the World Cup next year. He has scored 686 runs in 29 T20Is at a strike rate of 121.63.
IND Team Form
India have not only won their six matches in this tournament but have won nine of their last ten ODIs with their only defeat coming against Australia when they were already 2-0 up in the three-match series.
India Predicted Playing 11
Ruturaj Gaikwad, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Ishan Kishan (wk), Suryakumar Yadav (c), Tilak Varma, Rinku Singh, Washington Sundar, Axar Patel, Arshdeep Singh, Avesh Khan, Ravi Bishnoi
Australia Team News & Playing 11
AUS Team News
Although there could be as many as six of Australia’s successful World Cup players in the XI for this game, that number has reduced over the last 48 hours after David Warner was withdrawn from the series with Aaron Hardie taking his place in the squad.
AUS Key Players
- Glenn Maxwell - The 35 year old batting all-rounder already had a large following of adoring supporters in India before his remarkable 201 not out against Afghanistan earlier this month. He is a brilliant attacking batter. In T20Is, he has scored 438 runs against India at a strike rate of 141.74 and picked 4 wickets as well. He has bowled well in the World Cup as well and can be a handy spinner in this series as well.
- Marcus Stoinis - The all-rounder is more comfortable in T20 cricket than in ODIs and he will be desperate to make an impact after losing his place in the XI during the World Cup. Stoinis has picked 3 wickets and scored 86 runs against India in 7 T20Is so far. Stoinis has a good sense of the T20 format and has the ability to change the course of the match from any point.
- Sean Abbott - The bowling all-rounder featured in only one of the World Cup games earlier this month but he is a T20 specialist and is a consistent wicket taker at this level. Sean Abbott will be pushed by the management for the next T20 World Cup as he has been impressive in this format. He has picked 13 wickets in 12 T20Is so far.
- Adam Zampa - The 31 year old spinner produced the most wickets of any slow bowler in the Cricket World Cup and he will be looking forward to bowling on this surface. Zampa has taken 82 wickets in 73 T20Is out of which 12 wickets were against India. He has an impressive economy of 6.93 against India in this format.
- Tim David - Tim David has been a power-hitter for this format in various international matches and T20 leagues. He will be a key batter for Australia in the upcoming T20 World Cup. David has scored 805 runs so far in 28 T20Is but his biggest advantage is his strike rate which is 162.95.
AUS Team Form
Australia have won their last six completed T20Is and will also bring some World Cup winners to Visakhapatnam for this match.
Australia Predicted Playing 11
Matthew Wade (c) (wk), Matthew Short, Steve Smith, Travis Head, Glenn Maxwell, Tim David, Marcus Stoinis, Nathan Ellis, Sean Abbott, Jason Behrendorff, Adam Zampa

Who will win India vs Australia 1st T20 Match?
There are some fantastic players in the India squad with many of them likely to be all-format internationals over the coming years but it is Australia who have more experienced international players and we have them as the top team ahead of this opening game of the series.
🏆 India vs Australia Prediction
This will be an exciting game to get this series underway and the influx of new players in both sides will mean that there is no tiredness showing after the long Cricket World Cup. We expect spin bowling to be important and for neither team to be able to dominate the other in either innings. Our prediction is for a close match but we are backing Australia to win.
