India are favorites to win
India will look to inflict more misery on winless Afghanistan when they face each other at the Rose Bowl, Southampton. The match takes place on June 22 and the live action begins at 10:30 local time.

If there is something in the pitch for the bowlers, as expected, India may want to bowl first – particularly given how Afghanistan have struggled when asked to bat in this tournament.
After the frustration of the rain early in this tournament, Southampton is set to be dry and sunny when India and Afghanistan are in town.
The Rose Bowl wicket offered pace and bounce aplenty for Mark Wood and Jofra Archer in the most recent game in Southampton, when England beat West Indies.

Shikhar Dhawan, who missed the last game against Pakistan, has now been ruled out of the tournament with Rishabh Pant called up as a replacement. Vijay Shankar replaced Dhawan in the starting XI for that win, and India will be forced into one more change after Bhuvneshwar Kumar suffered a hamstring injury while bowling. Mohammad Shami could replace him.
Rohit Sharma’s 140 against Pakistan was his second century of this year’s tournament as he also hit 122* against South Africa. In between, the world number two ODI batsman posted 57 against Australia.
Only Virat Kohli is ranked higher than Sharma in ODI cricket. The India captain has scored 82 and 77 in his last two innings.
KL Rahul replaced Shikhar Dhawan in opening the batting last time out, meanwhile, and he hit 57 to get back to the form he showed when he hit 108 against Bangladesh.
Yuzvendra Chahal is India’s leading wicket-taker so far, with six from three games. Jasprit Bumrah, the world’s leading ODI bowler, has five so far
India have won all three of their completed matches at this Cricket world cup so far, with the only exception being the match against New Zealand which fell foul of the weather.
They had previously beaten South Africa and Australia, before that no result, and then beat Pakistan last time out. Rohit Sharma was their hero against their fierce rivals, scoring 140 in a total of 336/5. In reply, in an innings reduced to 40 overs, Pakistan reached just 212/6 as Vijay Shankar, Hardik Pandya and Kuldeep Yadav each claimed two wickets. India won by 89 runs on the DLS method.

Hazratullah Zazai, Hamid Hassan and Aftab Alam were all dropped last time out, as Afghanistan brought in Najibullah Zadran, Dawlat Zadran and Mujeeb Ur Rahman. Mujeeb was the most economical of Afghanistan’s bowlers, but Zazai could return to return some X-factor to their top order.
Hashmatullah Shahidi was Afghanistan’s top scorer against England, helping them to a respectable scoreline but not scoring fast enough to ever be competitive in the match. It was his second half-century of the tournament and he has 165 runs from five innings so far.
Najibullah Zadran is the only other Afghan batsman to score a half-century so far, while Hazratullah Zazai will hope to join them as he bids to live up to his big-hitting reputation.
With the ball, Gulbadin Naib and Dawlat Zadran both took three wickets apiece against England and have five in total. Mujeeb Ur Rahman was their most economical bowler last time out, meanwhile, and Rashid Khan will feel he has a point to prove after being pummelled to all parts of Old Trafford by England.
Mohammad Nabi’s ability with bat and ball is well known too – he took 4-30 against Sri Lanka to highlight that.
Afghanistan have lost five matches from five at the 2019 Cricket World Cup, having been bowled out for 207, 152, 172 and 125 on their way to heavy defeats in their first four games.
They suffered a nine wicket defeat, in just 28.4 overs, when they lost to South Africa at Sophia Gardens before conceding 397/6 against England last time out. For the first time, Afghanistan were not bowled out in reply but they could only reach 247/8.

Afghanistan and India have met in two previous ODIs, both in the Asia Cup. In 2014, India chased 160 in an easy eight-wicket win but last year the match was a thriller.
Mohammad Shahzad scored 124 as Afghanistan posted 252/8, before Mohammad Nabi followed his 64 by taking 2-40 in the Indian reply. KL Rahul top-scored with 60 but Rashid Khan’s wicket of Ravindra Jadeja with one ball to go saw India fall for 252 and the match was tied.
Matches Played | IND Won | AFG Won | Tie | No Result |

Unsurprisingly given Afghanistan’s dreadful form, India are huge favourites to win this match at 1.02 with Betway and 1.04 with Bet365.
It is imperative to balance your Dream XI side towards India, but to be able to afford the likes of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Jasprit Bumrah, you need to be smart with your picks.
Wicket-keeper
Though MS Dhoni could prove more popular, selecting Ikram Ali Khil frees up some space. If India’s top order score the runs expected of them, Dhoni will not be called upon to bat – that would be a waste of one of your Indian selections.
Batsmen
Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma may be expensive at 11 and 10.5 credits respectively, but they must be selected. Lokesh Rahul could also score heavily, but Hazratullah Zazai could be worth picking for Afghanistan as he bids to return and prove his worth.
All-rounders
Hardik Pandya is India’s star all-rounder, and looking at how England’s power-hitters destroyed Afghanistan last time out, he could be in for a quickfire, big score. Gulbadin Naib’s promotion up the order means he could prove a more valuable pick – with bat and ball – than team-mate Mohammad Nabi – saving a full credit.
Bowlers
As with the batsman, India’s star bowlers simply have to be picked. That means Jasprit Bumrah and Yuzvendra Chahal are in. As a result, Rashid Khan must be left out – but his form against England means that could be a sensible decision. Instead, Mujeeb Ur Rahman kept things tidy and is 8.5, while Dawlat Zadran has picked up wickets and is the same price. That leaves one spot for another Indian bowler, with Kuldeep Yadav 8.5 and, if he plays, Mohammed Shami possibly worth picking as an alternative at the same price.
Captain/Vice-captain
Rohit Sharma is in superb form up the order and will be looking to fill his boots again against Afghanistan. India’s batsmen could really shine in this game and Virat Kohli and Lokesh Rahul are both alternative options for captain or for vice-captain. If India bowl first, Jasprit Bumrah comes into the equation too.
BATSMEN | ALL ROUNDER | WICKET KEEPER | BOWLER |
---|---|---|---|
Virat Kohli (vc) | Hardik Pandya | Ikram Ali Khil | Jasprit Bumrah |
Rohit Sharma (c) | Gulbadin Naib | Yuzvendra Chahal | |
KL Rahul | Kuldeep Yadav | ||
Hazratullah Zazai | Dawlat Zadran |
India will expect a big win against Afghanistan and there is nothing in either side’s recent form to suggest this match will end in anything else.
