Hampshire Team News & Playing 11

HAM Team News

Hampshire have been victims of their own success in some senses, with James Vince and Liam Dawson earning World Cup call-ups – which therefore rule them out of the Royal London One-Day Cup final.

While the ECB were happy for the duo to play, ICC regulations do not allow World Cup players to feature in any other competition during the designated tournament window, which started on May 23.

Overseas star Aiden Markram is also unavailable due to his World Cup selection for South Africa, with Ajinkya Rahane his replacement. From the semi-final team, therefore, it is likely to be Rahane in for Vince and Brad Taylor as the second spin bowler in place of Dawson.

HAM Key Players

In James Vince and Aiden Markram, Hampshire are without their two top run-scorers in this year’s competition but they do still have Kolpak signing Rilee Rossouw available. His match-winning innings in the semi-final took him to four half-centuries in eight innings and 360 runs in total.

Tom Alsop has twice hit centuries in this year’s competition, meanwhile, against Sussex and Glamorgan, while Aneurin Donald and Sam Northeast both hit 50s as Hampshire beat Somerset when the two teams met in the group stage.

Kyle Abbott took 3-36 in that match and he has 20 wickets in this year’s tournament in all. Mason Crane will now lead the spin attack as he looks to add to his 14 so far, while Gareth Berg took 5-26 in the semi-final to earn Hampshire’s place in this final.

HAM Team Form

Hampshire topped the southern league table and then beat Lancashire in the semi-final to earn their place at Lord’s. The defending champions won seven of their eight group games with their only defeat coming away to Essex.

In their eight group games, Hampshire passed 300 on five occasions. Most recently, Aiden Markram’s century led them to 355/5 in a high-scoring nine-run win against Sussex. They followed that by bowling Somerset out for 216 on their way to a seven-wicket victory to round off the group stage.

In the semi-finals, Gareth Berg took 5-26 to restrict Lancashire to 241 all out. In reply, Hampshire were 23/3 but James Vince (79) and Rilee Rossouw (85) led the recovery and they eventually won by four wickets with an over to spare.

Somerset Team News & Playing 11

SOM Team News

Somerset were unchanged for their quarter-final and semi-final victories and are likely to stick with the same XI at Lord’s too. With no players on international duty, Somerset are not hamstrung by the same problems Hampshire are facing.

SOM Key Players

Tom Banton scored his second century of the tournament in the quarter-final win against Worcestershire, hitting 112 from 103 balls at the top of the order. He has 385 runs from ten innings so far, but he has been out-scored by two of his team-mates.

Opening partner Azhar Ali has 406 runs, including one century, while James Hildreth has hit three half-centuries on the way to 388 runs.

Peter Trego was their top-scorer in the semi-final win, meanwhile, and the big-hitting veteran also smashed 141 against Essex earlier in the competition. His 360 runs have come at just less than a run a ball.

On the bowling front, Craig Overton is not just their leading wicket-taker – with 20 from ten games – but boasts the best economy rate too at 4.79 runs per over. Thanks to some lusty lower-order hitting, he also 213 runs from 162 balls with the bat too.

The wickets have otherwise been shared fairly evenly. Five of Azhar Ali’s seven so far came in the quarter-final win against Nottinghamshire, while Roelof van der Merwe and Josh Davey have 11 and 12 wickets respectively.

SOM Team Form

After defeat to Hampshire when these sides last met, Somerset chased 290 to beat Surrey in their final group game – James Hildreth scoring 93 – to snatch the final quarter-final place.

Since then, they have turned on the style. Tom Banton’s 103-ball 112 led the way against Worcestershire as Somerset posted 337/8 before Azhar Ali’s five-wicket haul helped dismiss the hosts for just 190.

Somerset then posted 337 again – led by Peter Trego’s 73 and Ali’s 72, before they bowled Nottinghamshire out for 222 at batsman-friendly Trent Bridge to secure a place in the final.

Somerset Predicted Playing 11

Tom Banton, Azhar Ali, Peter Trego, James Hildreth, Tom Abell, Lewis Gregory, George Bartlett, Roelof van der Merwe, Craig Overton, Jamie Overton, Josh Davey

Hampshire vs Somerset Head to Head

Since the Royal London One-Day Cup was introduced – increasing the English county’s longer one-day format to 50 overs again – Hampshire and Somerset have played each other four times. Somerset claimed victory in the 2016 and 2018, while Hampshire’s wins came in 2017 and again this season.

Last year’s match was a brilliant high-scoring one, as Somerset reached 360/7 off the final ball to seal a three-wicket win as James Vince scored a century for Hampshire and Peter Trego did likewise for Somerset. This season, it was a much lower-scoring affair. Kyle Abbott took 3-36 as Somerset were bowled out for 216, before Aneurin Donald, Aiden Markram and Sam Northeast all hit half-centuries in Hampshire’s seven-wicket win.

Overton and Abbott to be their respective team’s top bowlers is 13.00 with #betyourway.

🏆 Hampshire vs Somerset Prediction

England call-ups have cost Hampshire two of their top players and they are no doubt weaker without Vince and Dawson, but they have strength at the top of the order still and a bowling attack packed with big-game experience. The defending champions can still seal back-to-back One Day Cup wins.
