Positioned second and fifth respectively on the points table, Gujarat Lions and Mumbai Indians will lock horns on May 21 in their quest for making it through to the playoffs. This 54th match of the Indian Premier League 2016 will be played at the Green Park Stadium in Kanpur and play will begin at 8 PM local time. It is going to be a crucial game for both the teams, but since Mumbai will be playing their last league match, they will try to win it at all costs.
Pitch Conditions and Toss
This will be just the second T20 match to be played at the Green Park. Recent records at this ground suggest that the pitch is an absolute beauty to bat on. No movement of the ball is expected off the deck and the batsmen can trust the bounce. So this should be a high scoring contest and 180 in the first innings should be about par.
Both GL and MI have won seven games so far in this IPL. Batting second, the former has six wins and the latter has five wins. Since majority of their victories came while chasing, the team that wins the toss is more likely to bat second here.

If Gujarat Lions Bat First
Predicted score: 170 and above
Despite having missed a few games, Finch is still the leading run-scorer for the Lions. McCullum is always a dangerous batsman in the T20 format while Raina's return to the side will further boost their batting. Since Smith and Jadeja have been inconsistent with the bat, the onus will be on McCullum, Raina and Finch to take Gujarat Lions to the predicted score.
McClenaghan and Bumrah have been the best bowlers for Mumbai Indians this season. McClenaghan has taken 17 wickets in 13 games and is the leading wicket-taker of the tournament. Harbhajan Singh and Krunal Pandya will look to tighten things up in the middle overs. Mumbai have a good bowling attack and if they keep picking up wickets at regular intervals, Gujarat will struggle to get to 170.

If Mumbai Indians Bat First
Predicted score: 180 and above
With their top-order batsmen in form, Mumbai Indians' batting lineup looks even stronger. Rohit Sharma and Martin Guptill will open the innings and if one of them plays a flashy innings, pressure will be taken off the middle-order. Mumbai bat deep and even if they lose a couple of quick wickets, they will still have the likes of Pollard and Buttler down the order who don't take much time to settle. With Krunal Pandya and Rayudu also in good form, Mumbai Indians should be able to touch the 180 mark.
MI openers will be facing Gujarat's Praveen Kumar and Dhawal Kulkarni first up. If the Lions succeed in breaking their opening partnership early, they will have an opportunity to push them on the back foot. Bravo has been GL's best bowler and if Jadeja and Tambe provide good support to him, Mumbai could end up short of the predicted total.
Our Prediction
Gujarat Lions and Mumbai Indians are both strong teams with a well balanced batting and bowling lineup. So there is not much to distinguish between the two sides. The last time they met at the Wankhede, the match went down to the wire with Gujarat Lions winning on the final ball of the innings. However, while Gujarat have lost three of their last five games, Mumbai have won three.
So taking the recent form of the two teams into account, we feel that Mumbai Indians should be the favorites to win the match against Gujarat Lions.
