ENG vs RSA Betting Tips

  • Batting at the top of the order, 36 year old Dawid Malan is averaging 61.60 from 24 ODIs and is one of the players in world cricket who has hit a century in all three international formats. With scores of 54, 96, 127 and 140 across his last six ODI innings, we are backing Malan to be England’s highest run scorer against South Africa. Adil Rashid has taken over 150 ODI wickets since the start of 2015 and if England are to be successful in this Cricket World Cup then they need him to be at his best. He picked up 3 wickets in the defeat against Afghanistan and he is our tip for England’s top wicket taker on Saturday.
  • Quinton de Kock was targeted by the spin bowlers at the top of the innings against the Netherlands but still hit three fours before being dismissed for 20 runs from 22 balls. He is approaching 31 years of age and is two innings away from his 150th in ODI cricket. His record is brilliant with just under 6400 runs in the format and he is our pick for South Africa’s highest run scorer against England. Marco Jansen took 2-27 in the last match with the rest of the bowling attack conceding between 38 and 57. He finds swing and bounce from his left-arm angle and he is a strong choice for South Africa’s top wicket taker in Mumbai.
  • After being brought up in South Africa, there is an added incentive for Dawid Malan to perform in this game. We recommend choosing him to hit over 31.5 runs in this match.

ENG vs SA ODI Match Prediction & Betting Tips, Cricket World Cup 2023

Match 20 of the 2023 Cricket World Cup sees England and South Africa go head to head at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai. England, the 2019 Cricket World Cup Champions, have won one and lost two so far with their victory coming against Bangladesh and their last loss a shock defeat to Afghanistan. South Africa got off to a brilliant start with wins over Sri Lanka and Australia but then suffered a shock loss of their own when they were beaten by the Netherlands by 38 runs in Match 15 on Tuesday. Read on as we preview this match. The game begins at 14:00 local time.

Most pundits believe that England are not as strong with either the bat or the ball as they were in 2019 but they still have some of the world’s best players to select from. They will have to be at their best in this clash and we expect them to be far better than we saw against Afghanistan.

South Africa’s defeat against the Netherlands was arguably more of a shock than England’s to Afghanistan due to the high level of performance from South Africa we had seen over recent weeks. They have a very strong team and they should push England all the way in this match.

ENG vs SA Match Toss Prediction

The last three ODIs and five of the last six at this venue have been won by the team batting second. We predict that both teams will choose to field first if they win the toss.

ENG vs SA Pitch Report

The pitch at the Wankhede Stadium is often bowler friendly and we saw Australia dismissed for 188 in the last ODI here. A par score will be around 280-300.

The location of the stadium next to the sea provides good swing to the pacers due to the winds. Wankhede Stadium has hosted 23 ODIs so far out of which 11 have been won by the team batting first and 12 were won by the chasing side.

Mumbai Weather Report

High humidity is expected throughout this game with cloud cover from start to finish. The temperature is forecast to remain above 30 degrees across the match.

England Team News & Playing 11

England Team News

The fitness of Ben Stokes remains a big issue for England and it looks like he will be passed fit and will be able to play in this game. However, after a poor display in the last match, we expect Sam Curran to be left out and Moeen Ali to come into the side.

England Team Key Players

  • Dawid Malan - The left-handed opener is England’s leading run-scorer in the World Cup 2023 so far with a top score of 140 and 186 runs in total. He will enjoy facing the pace bowlers for South Africa.
  • Harry Brook - The right-hander was a controversial pick for the squad which meant Jason Roy was left out. The all-format batter top scored with 66 runs from 61 balls in the defeat against Afghanistan.
  • Joe Root - Joe Root has scored 170 runs in 3 matches at a strike rate of almost 100 in this World Cup. He is one of the finest ODI batsmen and we are backing him as a key batter in this match.

South Africa Team News & Playing 11

South Africa Team News

After opting for Tabraiz Shamsi on a spinning wicket in the previous game, Gerald Coetzee came back into South Africa’s side ahead of the match against the Netherlands in Dharamsala. Although they suffered a shock defeat, we expect South Africa to select the same XI for the England fixture.

South Africa Team Key Players

  • Quinton de Kock - Ahead of Thursday’s game, only two batters had hit more runs than the South African keeper-batter who began the tournament with successive centuries.
  • Aiden Markram - When the right-handed number four was dismissed for only 1 run against the Netherlands, it was a sign that South Africa were in trouble. He has been in brilliant form and hits the ball with plenty of power.
  • Rassie van der Dussen - Van der Dussen is currently at the 4th spot in the ICC ODI rankings for top batters and he is proving his worth in the World Cup. He has scored 138 runs in 3 matches so far at an average of 46.00.

  • Marco Jansen - The tall left-arm pace bowler is also very useful with the bat. Ahead of this game he has taken 6 wickets in the tournament with a strike-rate of only 25.00.
  • Kagiso Rabada - The fast bowler is one of the most accurate, hostile and quick pacers across all formats of international cricket. He dismissed top order batters Vikramjit Singh and Bas de Leede in the last game.

Although they have only won match so far in the tournament, England are favourites to win with the bookies and can be backed at 1.72. South Africa are expected to be very competitive and are priced at 2.05.

Who will win England vs South Africa ODI Match?

This looks like being a very close contest and we expect a big performance from one player could be enough to secure the victory. Overall, we think England have more players capable of big performances in Mumbai.

ENG vs SA Top Team Batsmen

Dawid Malan, Harry Brook, Jos Buttler and Joe Root are our batting choices for England. Captain Buttler has not made a score over 43 from his last six ODIs but has been posting consistent scores. He will be looking to kick on from a good start and South Africa will be wary of his talent with an ODI batting average of 41.13 from 145 innings. Former Test skipper Joe Root has seen his ODI average dip below 49 after making only 11 against Afghanistan but has been in strong form during the tournament with scores of 77 against New Zealand in Ahmedabad and 82 against Bangladesh in Dharamsala.

For South Africa, Quinton de Kock, Aiden Markram, Temba Bavuma and David Miller are our batting picks. Bavuma has made scores of 8, 35 and 16 so far in the 2023 Cricket World Cup but averages an impressive 50.92 in this format. Furthermore, the skipper struck 109 from 102 balls against England when the sides met earlier this year. Miller is a white-ball specialist player and he looked like being the only batter capable of saving South Africa from their embarrassing defeat to the Netherlands when he struck four fours and one six in his innings of 43 runs from 53 balls.

ENG vs SA Top Team Bowlers

For England, our bowling picks are Reece Topley, Chris Woakes, Mark Wood and Adil Rashid. Tall left-arm pace bowler Topley made an instant impact in the tournament when he came in for the Bangladesh game and took 4-43 against the Tigers. Topley has struggled with injuries in the past but is fully fit at the moment and has 5 wickets in the competition already. Bowling all-rounder Woakes has had a slow start in this campaign but is one of England’s 2019 World Cup winners and is renowned for finding swing when other bowlers can not. He was in incredible form during the Men’s Ashes earlier this year and he could well be in the wickets again in this match.

We are backing Lungi Ngidi, Marco Jansen, Kagiso Rabada and Keshav Maharaj as the top bowlers for South Africa. Ngidi was expensive in his later overs against the Netherlands but he is yet to go wicketless in the tournament and has picked up four dismissals so far. In this format, his best bowling figures are 6-58. Spinner Maharaj is always very accurate and rarely concedes many runs. The slow left-arm orthodox bowler comes into this match after returning figures of 2-62 against Sri Lanka in Delhi and 2-30 against Australia in Lucknow before adding another wicket to his tally against the Netherlands.

🏆 England vs South Africa Prediction

This match gives both teams the opportunity to show that their defeat to one of the smaller sides in their last games was a one-off and that they are genuine contenders for the competition. South Africa have been in brilliant form in this format and it will be very interesting to see how their players respond to the defeat against the Netherlands. England have not been very convincing in this format over the last couple of years but still have players who can perform on the highest stage when it really matters. Our prediction is for a close contest but with England coming out on top in Mumbai on Saturday.
