Eng vs Pak: Will the Hosts Stave Off Pakistan’s Challenge?
The stage has been set for the first test match between England and Pakistan to be played at the Lord's cricket ground in London on the 14th of July. Live action will commence at 11 AM local time. While England will be going into this match with the recent home test series win over Sri Lanka, Pakistan have been out of action since the World T20 earlier this year. All eyes will be on Mohammad Amir as the fast bowler will be returning to test cricket from a five-year ban.

Venue and Toss
The Lord's has seen some high scores of late. 416, 566, 389, 295 and 575 are the first-innings scores in the last five tests played at this ground. Though the pitch is expected to last till the fifth day, the team that wins the toss on Thursday may want to bat first here and put up at least 400 on the scoreboard.
If the coin falls in favor of Pakistan and they score something around 400 while batting first, they could be in with a strong chance because of their lethal bowling attack. England, however, will be very difficult to beat if they win the toss.

Predicted Score: Around 400
Gary Ballance will be coming in to replace Nick Compton who produced underwhelming performances in the Sri Lanka test series. Alex Hales will open the batting along with skipper Alastair Cook. Both were impressive against the Lankans and they will look to give England a solid start. Joe Root seems to have found his lost form with back-to-back fifties in the last two ODIs, and he should be backed to top-score in the first test.
Mohammad Amir is going to be the biggest thorn in England's flesh. The left-arm fast bowler is already looking dangerous as he managed to swing the ball early in both the warm-up games. He will be Pakistan's best bet to take a few wickets upfront. Wahab Riaz, Yasir Shah and Imran Khan will be the other bowlers watch out for. If England lose their openers and Root cheaply, they might struggle to reach the predicted score.

If PAK Bat First
Predicted Score: Around 350
Their batsmen did well in the two warm-up games, Azhar Ali in particular. The right-handed batsman scored centuries in both the games and he is most likely to top-score for Pakistan given the good form he's in at the moment. Younis Khan is another centurion who is expected to put up a decent show with the bat while Asad Shafiq struck a fifty in each innings against Somerset.
The bad news for England is that their ace bowler James Anderson won't be featuring in this match due to injury. Debutant Toby Roland-Jones has been picked in his place who has 278 wickets in 75 first-class matches and he will also bring depth in the batting. Stuart Broad, Steve Finn and Chris Woakes can also trouble the Pakistani batsmen under swinging conditions.

Pakistan last toured England back in 2010 where they lost the test series 3-1. The hosts had wiped the visitors by an innings and 225 runs the last time these two sides clashed at the Lord's. Also, England recently outclassed Sri Lanka in the same format and seem to be very tough to beat at home.
Pakistan defeated England 2-0 last year in their most recent test series in the UAE. But since teams from the sub-continent have struggled to perform with the bat in English conditions, we're predicting the hosts to win this first test match.
