The Sophia Gardens has hosted five T20 internationals till date out of which three have been won by the side bowling first. And also since the pitch at this ground is expected to remain unchanged after the first period of play, the toss-winning team will probably prefer to chase.

England have been dealt a couple of injury blows with batsmen Sam Billings and Jason Roy being ruled out of the T20I against Pakistan. While Billings dislocated his shoulder while playing for Kent during a domestic game and has been replaced by wicketkeeper Ben Foakes, Roy sustained a back spasm while playing for Surrey. Alex Hales, meanwhile, failed to clear a dope test and has therefore been left out of the squad. The hosts have included Dawid Malan, Ben Duckett and James Vince in their T20I squad.
Joe Root, Eoin Morgan and James Vince are the key batsmen in this England line-up. Vince will probably the open the innings. He has scored 194 runs in 7 T20Is and it will be up to him to take the team off to a brisk start. Skipper Morgan has scored the most runs at this ground in the twenty-over format while Root has five T20I half-centuries. David Willey is another vital cog in the side due to his ability to make good contributions with both bat and ball. Chris Jordan, Jofra Archer and Adil Rashid will be the danger men with the ball. Jordan was the best bowler in the recent T20I series against the West Indies with six wickets in three matches and the pacer will be expected to hurt Pakistan in the powerplay. Rashid is third in the ICC T20I rankings for bowlers and he will look to strangle the batsmen with his leg-breaks.
England have been blowing hot and cold in the game's shortest format, winning seven and losing five out of the twelve matches they have played so far since last year. However, their recent performance has been impressive and they now find themselves on a four-match winning streak. Their latest T20I assignment came in March in the West Indies where they swept the hosts 3-0.

Pakistan will miss the services of Shoaib Malik in this upcoming T20 international against England. The allrounder has returned home due to personal reasons and is expected to join the team in ten day's time. Mohammad Hafeez too will not be available for this match as he is currently recoveringfrom an injury he had picked during the Pakistan Super League. He will also miss the first two games of the ODI series. Leg-spinner Shadab Khan is suffering from a viral infection and he has been ruled out of the entire limited-overs series. Yasir Shah has been included in both the T20I and ODI squads as Shadab’s like-for-like replacement.
The top three - Imam-ul-Haq, Fakhar Zaman and Babar Azam - will hold the key to Pakistan's batting. Babar's knock is going to be the most crucial of all. He is currently the world's best batsman in the T20 format and is coming off a very good T20I series in South Africa where he topped the runs charts. Fakhar has four T20I fifties under his belt and Pakistan should find themselves in a strong position if he and Babar get going. The visitors, however, will also expect their skipper Sarfaraz Ahmed to chip in with some runs. Mohammad Amir is one of the team's leading wicket-takers in this format and he even took a three-wicket haul in the only T20I he played against the Proteas. Apart from him, Hasan Ali and Imad Wasim will be the main weapons for Pakistan in terms of bowling. While Hasan will be threatening with the new ball, Wasim who is fourth in the ICC T20I bowling rankings will have a big role to play in the middle overs.
Pakistan have been on a roll in the T20 format. They have played 22 matches since last year and have won 18 of those which shows how dominant they have been. However, they lost their most recent T20I series which was played earlier this year in February against South Africa in South Africa. After losing the first two fixtures by 6 and 7 runs respectively, Pakistan managed to salvage some pride by winning the third and final game by 27 runs.

England and Pakistan have played 14 T20 internationals against each other in the past. Nine of those have been won by the former and four by the latter with one having resulted in a tie.
England have beaten Pakistan four times in their last six head-to-head T20I meetings. The visitors, however, secured a comfortable nine-wicket victory in the most recent encounter at Manchester in 2016.
The two countries have faced each other twice at this ground in the twenty-over format with England emerging victorious on both the occasions.

England enter this T20 international as the bookmakers' favourites to win. The home team is being offered at odds of 1.57 on Bet365 and 1.55 on Betway and Betrally. Pakistan are the underdogs for this game at 2.37 on Bet365 and 2.25 on Betway and Betrally.
Pakistan are the number one ranked T20 team while England are third behind South Africa. The hosts are coming on the back of a 3-0 whitewash of the West Indies while the visitors faced a 1-2 defeat in their previous T20I series against South Africa. England have an immaculate record in this format at the Sophia Gardens having won all their five fixtures here including both the encounters against Pakistan. However, they will be without many of their key players like Jason Roy, Ben Stokes, Jonny Bairstow and Chris Woakes which means there is going to be plenty of experience in this England side. Pakistan have been very impressive in this format of the game in recent times and we expect them to begin their tour with a win.
