Chennai Super Kings were asked to bowl first last time out and usually choose to do so too – just as they did after winning the toss in their most recent home game.
Read on for team previews, betting tips, latest odds and match prediction for Chennai Super Kings vs Rajasthan Royals, Indian Premier League 2019.
Chennai Super Kings have only needed three overseas players so far, having been unchanged for their first two matches. Faf du Plessis has been the defending champions’ most notable absentee, but with the balance of the side spot on in the first two matches, the South Africa captain may have to stay patient. His compatriot, Lungi Ngidi, is out for the whole IPL but other overseas players waiting in the wings are English duo Sam Billings and David Willey and New Zealander Mitchell Santner.
Shane Watson arrived at the IPL in red-hot form after leading Quetta Gladiators to the Pakistan Super League title by topping the batting charts. And the Australian continued that last time out, with a breezy 44 from 26 balls at the top of the order to ensure the chase was always under control.
Suresh Raina also injected some tempo into the innings with a rapid 30 from 16 balls, but they have not been chasing big enough targets for anyone to have been truly tested yet. When they are, the likes of Ambati Rayudu and captain MS Dhoni will be expected to stand up too.
It is the bowlers who have excelled so far, led by four wickets apiece for Imran Tahir and Dwayne Bravo so far. Tahir took 3-9 as they ripped through Royal Challengers Bangalore, while Harbhajan Singh also rewound the clock to claim three wickets. Bravo, meanwhile, was man of the match as he claimed 3-33 and then hit the winning runs too.
Defending champions Chennai Super Kings have won two from two so far this season, in very different circumstances. On the opening night, Harbhajan Singh (3-20), Imran Tahir (3-9) and Ravi Jadeja (2-15) ripped through the Royal Challengers Bangalore line-up to bowl them out for 70. Chennai claimed a seven-wicket win.
Last time out, meanwhile, they were set 148 to beat Delhi Capitals after Dwayne Bravo claimed 3-33. Shane Watson got the chase off to a rapid start, and the Super Kings cruised home – winning by six wickets in the final over.

Rajasthan's faith in the same 11 that lost the opening game was not rewarded against Sunrisers Hyderabad last time out. With Krishnappa Gowtham and Dhawal Kulkarni both very expensive with the ball, as was English all-rounder Ben Stokes, there are sure to be changes this time out. Varun Aaron is among the home options to bring in, while Liam Livingstone, Ish Sodhi and Oshane Thomas are the overseas options. Ashton Turner is not available for the latter list, however, as Australia round off their tour of the UAE to face Pakistan.
Sanju Samson's brilliant unbeaten century last time out - hitting ten fours and four sixes in his 55-ball 102* - deserved more than to be on the losing side. Samson also scored 30 in their opening game and looks in good touch.
Jos Buttler fell short last time out, but was at his best in the opening game until his controversial ‘Mankad' dismissal for 69. He was Rajasthan's star man last season and can be again.
Ajinkya Rahane followed up 27 in the first game with 70 from 49 balls last time out, meanwhile. The Royals' captain has now passed 50 on 36 occasions in his T20 career.
The Rajasthan bowlers are yet to shine so far, but Shreyas Gopal took 3-27 last time out. He took 11 wickets last season too, from ten innings, but that was well short of Jofra Archer's 15. The Bajan-born England World Cup hopeful needs to start rediscovering those heights soon.
Rajasthan Royals have lost two from two so far, but there has been plenty to discuss in their matches so far. Jos Buttler was Mankaded having hit 69 from 43 balls against Kings XI Punjab in the first match - Rajasthan eventually collapsing from a position of control to 170/9 in reply to 184/4.
Last time out, meanwhile, Sanju Samson hammered a unbeaten 102 from 55 balls and Ajinkya Rahane posted 70 as Rajasthan scored 198/2 against Sunrisers Hyderabad. Shreyas Gopal claimed 3-27 in reply, but his resistance was largely alone as Sunrisers wrapped up a five-wicket win with an over to spare.

Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals have met on 20 previous occasions, of which the Super Kings have won 12. After both serving two-year IPL bans, they returned to action last year and beat each other once apiece.
Chennai were in dominant form in the first game, led by Shane Watson's 106 in a total of 204/5, before they bowled Rajasthan out for 140. In the second meeting, the Super Kings posted 176/4 but came up against in-form Jos Buttler - the Englishman hammering 95 from 60 balls.
Unsurprisingly after their fine start so far, Chennai Super Kings are big favourites for the opening game at 1.61 to win with Bet365 compared to 2.30 on Rajasthan Royals.
Chennai Super Kings have earned two wins from their first two matches so far and the defending champions will face Rajasthan Royals - still looking for their first win of 2019 - confident they can maintain that winning start.
