He has not backed up the one half-century he scored earlier in this year's competition. If Billings misses out, South Africa's Faf du Plessis is the natural replacement, while England all-rounder David Willey could make his first appearance of this year's competition. Shreyas Iyer could not have asked for a better start to his captaincy, following Gautam Gambhir's resignation, as he smashed 93 not out from 40 balls and led the Delhi Daredevils to victory against Kolkata Knight Riders. Gambhir's decision prompted a reshuffle of the team, with Colin Munro scoring a quick-fire 33 opening the batting in his place. Dan Christian missed out, and after more economical bowling by latecomer Liam Plunkett last time out, it is likely to remain that way.

Shreyas Iyer has scored half-centuries in each of his last three innings, but none have been as destructive a the 40-ball 93 he plundered against Kolkata Knight Riders in the most recent match. Teenager Prithvi Shaw hit 62, meanwhile, in just his second senior T20 match, having scored 22 against Kings XI Punjab. Liam Plunkett was a late addition to the Delhi Daredevils squad, but he has impressed with two economical bowling performances, including 3/17 from his full four overs in his first game. Trent Boult leads their wicket charge, however, with 11 at an average of 20.54 from his seven games so far.

Delhi Daredevils are currently bottom of the IPL 2018 table after seven matches, of which they have won just two. It looked even worse prior to their thrashing of Kolkata Knight Riders in their most recent match - the Daredevils roaring back into form as Shreyas Iyer smashed 93 not out in a total of 219/4, before restricting the Knight Riders to 164/9. It was vengeance for a 71-run defeat against the same opposition less than two weeks earlier, when Kolkata bowled Delhi out for 129 at Eden Gardens. In between, they lost by six wickets to an AB de Villiers-inspired Royal Challengers Bangalore, and then fell four run shorts in pursuit of Kings XI Punjab's 143/8 prior to their much-needed win last time out.
Delhi Daredevils have only beaten Chennai Super Kings four times in the Indian Premier League, losing 12 of their previous meetings. This is their first match of this year's competition, however, and therefore their first since Chennai Super Kings' two-year ban and Delhi actually won when they last met in 2015. Shreyas Iyer scored an unbeaten 70 from 49 balls in that match, as Delhi successfully chased 120 to win in just 16.4 overs.
