Central Hinds are favorites to win
Central Hinds Women will take on Wellington Blaze at Fitzherbert Park, Palmerston North. Match 4 of the 2022-23 Women’s Super Smash gets underway at 11:00 local time on Monday 26th December.
After Auckland Hearts began their campaign against Canterbury Magicians on Monday, Central Hinds become the last team to get their season underway in this match. Hinds won only two games throughout the entire tournament last year and are not expected to challenge at the top of the group.
Mikaela Greig and Natalie Dodd both hit over 170 runs in last year's competition but the Hinds will need at least two of their players to hit 250+ this season if they are to come close to the end of season finals. Wellington Blaze will look for early wickets to dent the already weak confidence of the batting line-up.
24 year old all-rounder Jess Watkin impressed with the ball last year but we expect her to focus on her batting in this campaign after returning a poor number of runs. Central Hinds’ top wicket taker in the 2021-22 tournament was international Rosemary Mair and she is likely to be very accurate in this match.
Central Hinds won one of their last five matches to end last year’s Super Smash campaign.
The 2021-22 Champions got off to a winning start in this year’s competition with a 19 run win over Otago Sparks in Match 2 on Christmas Eve at the Cello Basin Reserve. It was not their best ever performance and we expect to see an improvement at Fitzherbert Park.
Skipper Amelia Kerr (46 runs from 42 balls) and fellow New Zealand international Maddy Green (45 not out from 39 balls) were the dangerous batters for Wellington Blaze in their first game. The same pair, and Jess Kerr, will be the players the team look to for runs in this game.
It was a strong team bowling performance from Wellington Blaze against Otago Sparks and we expect the same bowling attack to be selected in this game. Jess Kerr and Leigh Kasperek both took three wickets with Kasperek particularly impressive and bowling a maiden over.
Wellington Blaze have got off to another winning start, they won every match in the competition last year.
The match will be played at Fitzherbert Park, Palmerston North. Expect to see a pitch which has good pace and a par score of around 140-145.
