Canterbury Kings Team News & Playing 11

CAN Team News

While they have not enjoyed much success on the pitch in this year’s Super Smash, Canterbury Kings are without four New Zealand internationals – Tom Latham, Henry Nicholls, Matt Henry and now Todd Astle having been called up for the ODI series against India. Jeremy Benton is likely to replace Astle from the side which faced Auckland last time out, while Leo Carter is also in the 12-man squad.

CAN Key Players

Kyle Jamieson’s stunning bowling led Canterbury Kings to their only victory in this year’s tournament, when he took 6-7 from four overs against Auckland Aces, and he has proved it was no flash in the pan by moving to 15 in total from his eight matches.

That makes him the joint-leading wicket-taker in this season’s tournament, while his economy rate of 7.61 runs per over is the best of Canterbury’s regular bowlers too.

Consistent runs have been their biggest downfall, particularly with Tom Latham only available for four games – during which he did hit a century. Their top run scorer is Cole McConchie with 222 runs from eight innings, including one half-century.

Chad Bowes has contributed 164 runs at the top of the order, again with one half-century to his name.

CAN Team Form

Canterbury Kings sit bottom of the points table with just one win from eight games, though that victory was one to savour when Kyle Jamieson took 6-7 from four overs as Auckland Aces were bowled out for 110 at Eden Park. In reply, Cole McConchie hit an unbeaten 47 to earn a five-wicket win.

McConchie followed that with 83 against Wellington Firebirds but he was the only batsman to get going as the Kings were bowled out for 135 in reply to 200/5. They then failed to defend 193/5 in a two-wicket defeat to Northern Knights with two balls to spare.

Next up, Central Stags restricted the Kings to just 112/8 from their 20 overs at the Hagley Oval, and won by six wickets, and Canterbury tasted defeat again next time out in a match reduced to 16 overs per side – finishing just six runs short of their revised target against Northern Knights.

Tom Latham hit a century in the next game, scoring 110 from 60 balls, but the Kings batsmen had been asked to do too much – finishing 18 runs short of Central Stags’ 225/3. They then posted just 122/8 in their most recent game, against Auckland Aces, on their way to a nine-wicket defeat.

Canterbury Kings Predicted Playing 11

Chad Bowes, Tom MacRury, Steve Murdoch, Cole McConchie, Andrew Ellis, Cameron Fletcher, Leo Carter, Will Williams, Kyle Jamieson, Jeremy Benton, Edward Nuttall.

Otago Volts Team News & Playing 11

OTG Team News

Ben Raine is not in the squad for the final game of this season’s Super Smash, with Shawn Hicks and Michael Rippon the two players in the Volts’ 12-man squad for the Southern Showdown who are vying to replace him.

OTG Key Players

Nathan Broom hit 65 from 34 balls at the top of the order last time out, sharing a 117-run partnership with Hamish Rutherford (44 from 28 balls). They have 153 and 169 runs respectively, from four and six innings. It was Broom’s first half-century, in his fourth innings, while Rutherford has one 50 to his name too – achieved in the win against Canterbury when they last met.

Anaru Kitchen is their leading run-scorer, with 174 runs from six innings – again including one half-century.

With the ball, Christi Viljoen and Jacob Duffy have both taken ten wickets, with the former claiming a four-wicket haul in the thrilling win against Wellington Firebirds in December.

OTG Team Form

Otago Volts actually won their first two matches of this year’s Super Smash, against Canterbury Kings and Wellington Firebirds – the latter by just one run after Christi Viljoen’s 4-23 – but have not won since.

They posted just 99/7 on their way to a five-wicket defeat to Northern Knights, while the match against Central Stags was rained off. The two teams did meet four days later, and the Stags scored 208/7, which proved 54 runs too many for Otago.

Another no result at Dunedin followed, against Auckland Aces, who like the Stags then beat the Volts in the reverse fixture when they next met – Auckland posting 184/5 and the Volts coming up just short on 180/8.

Last time out, Neil Broom (65) and Hamish Rutherford (44) got Otago off to a great start in pursuit of 221/3, but they finished up just 11 runs short.

Otago Volts Predicted Playing 11

Neil Broom, Hamish Rutherford, Shawn Hicks, Anaru Kitchen, Ben Cox, Josh Finnie, Brad Wilson, Josh Tasman-Jones, Christi Viljoen, Nathan Smith, Jacob Duffy

Canterbury Kings vs Otago Volts Head to Head

The match at the start of this year’s Super Smash was the 21st between these two sides, and Otago’s win was their eighth in the fixture. Canterbury have won 12 and there has been one no result.

Canterbury won both matches against Otago in the 2016/17 and 2017/18 seasons, but this season Hamish Rutherford’s half-century led the Volts to victory as they successfully reached 188/5 to win by five wickets with three balls remaining.

Canterbury Kings vs Otago Volts Betting Odds

With neither side in good form, the bookmakers are split. Bet365 and Betfair are both offering 1.90 on Canterbury to win and the same price on Otago Volts.

The key could be Otago’s in-form opening pair. They shared a century stand last time out, while Hamish Rutherford hit a half-century when the Volts beat Canterbury earlier this season. They are again 1.90 to post the highest opening partnership.

Unsurprisingly, Kyle Jamieson is favourite to be Canterbury Kings’ top bowler, meanwhile. The Super Smash’s joint-leading wicket taker this season is 3.20.

🏆 Canterbury Kings vs Otago Volts Prediction

Neither side are in good form ahead of this Southern Showdown, but Otago Volts’ opening batsmen could give them some cause for optimism.

Final Verdict: Back Otago Volts to beat Canterbury Kings at 1.90 with Bet365 and Betfair.
