Canterbury Magicians are favorites to win
Canterbury Magicians will take on Otago Sparks at Hagley Oval, Christchurch. Match 28 of the 2022-23 Women’s Super Smash gets underway at 10:00 local time on Saturday 4th February.
The Magicians are in second place in the table, 10 points behind Wellington Blaze in the top position. They had a 25 run (DLS) victory over bottom of the table Central Hinds in their last game in Match 23. This is the first time the Magicians are taking on the Sparks in this year’s tournament.
Right-handed opener Kate Anderson maintained her strong form in 2023 with 92 not out from 69 balls in the win over Central Hinds in Match 23. Amy Satterthwaite has not been able to convert her good starts into big scores over recent matches but remains a top quality player.
There was a wicket each for Sarah Asmussen, Melissa Banks, Gabby Sullivan and Kate Anderson in the 18 overs bowled by Canterbury Magicians in last Friday’s match. It could be hard work for their bowling attack on this batter-friendly pitch.
Canterbury Magicians have lost only two games all tournament and have won three of their last four.
A recent upturn in form has seen Otago Sparks climb up the table in the 2022-23 Women’s Super Smash and they come into this match in third place. Both of their last two games have been against bottom of the table Central Hinds and this will be a much tougher test for the batters and bowlers.
Runs from Olivia Gain (23), Polly Inglis (30 not out) and captain Felicity Leydon-Davis (25 not out) saw Otago Sparks get home with six wickets and four balls to spare in their last clash with Central Hinds. Gain hit seven boundaries in her previous innings and is in fine T20 form.
Otago Sparks have taken 19 wickets from their last two matches but will probably find the wickets do not fall quite as quickly against Canterbury Magicians at Hagley Oval. 21 year old medium pacer Emma Black took five wickets (1-14 and 4-15) across the last two Super Smash fixtures.
Otago Sparks are targeting their third successive victory in the competition in this match.
The match will be played at Hagley Oval, Christchurch. Three of the last four Women’s Super Smash innings on this pitch have seen only four wickets fall. We expect a good batting surface with a par score around 150.

Laura Hughes(wk), Kate Anderson, Amy Satterthwaite(c), Fran Wilson, Abigale Gerken, Natalie Cox, Jodie Dean, Melissa Banks, Gabby Sullivan, Jessica Simmons, Sarah Asmussen
Bella James, Olivia Gain, Polly Inglis(wk), Kate Ebrahim, Caitlin Blakely, Felicity Leydon-Davis(c), Linsey Smith, Kirstie Gordon, Emma Black, Sophie Oldershaw, Molly Loe
This should be a well contested game between two teams challenging near the top of the table and who are both in strong form. Otago Sparks will be full of confidence after successive victories but we think they will find it far more difficult against the quality of players in Canterbury Magicians’ side. Our prediction is for Canterbury Magicians to win this match.
