Bangladesh U19 are favorites to win
Bangladesh will take on Canada in Match 17 of the Under-19 World Cup. This 50-over match will be played at the Conaree Sports Club, Basseterre on January 20 starting at 09:00 local time.
Bangladesh, who won the 2020 Under-19 World Cup, got off to a very disappointing start in their defence of the trophy. The holders were bowled out inside 36 overs for only 97 against England in Basseterre. Number 11 batter, Ripon Mondahl, top scored for Bangladesh with 33 not out from 41 balls. Chasing 98 for victory, England reached the target from only 25.1 overs and only 3 wickets down. Captain Rakibul Hasan and Ripon Mondahl were the only bowlers to pick up wickets with the other England dismissal a run-out.
Canada have lost their two games to UAE and England so far in the tournament and must win this game to give themselves a chance of finishing in the top two. The defeat against England was expected but the Canadians emerged with credit after batting for 48.1 overs in reply to England’s 320-7. Gurnek Singh top scored with some boundary hitting low down the order, but it was opener Anoop Chima who impressed with a patient 38 to anchor the innings. All-rounder Kairav Sharma hit 43 against UAE but stood out with bowling figures of 3-51 against England.
The match will be played at the Conaree Sports Club, Basseterre. We have seen two contrasting games at this venue with one match seeing high totals and the other producing Australia all out for 175. In both games, spin bowling has been the most successful on the wicket.

Bangladesh’s hopes of defending their trophy are not over after their defeat to England but they must produce a far stronger performance against Canada if they are to be taken seriously. We expect Bangladesh to be nervy early on but to come through to register a victory.
