Bangladesh Team News & Playing 11
BAN Team News
Bangladesh have a few injury concerns ahead of the tournament opener against Sri Lanka. While Shakib Al Hasan and Tamim Iqbal are nursing their finger injuries, Nazmul Hossain is recovering from a thumb injury he had sustained during a training session. Shakib has been reported to have postponed his finger surgery and the team is hopeful that Tamim would be fully fit by match day.
BAN Key Players
Bangladesh are hoping that Tamim Iqbal recovers fully from his injury as he hold's the key to their batting. The opening batsman is their leading ODI run-getter and he also topped the runs charts in the recent series against the West Indies. Mushfiqur Rahim, Mahmudullah and Shakib Al Hasan are the others in this line-up who could play the big knocks. With the ball, Bangladesh will look to the likes of Mashrafe Mortaza, Mustafizur Rahman and Shakib to deliver the goods. Skipper Mortaza has taken the most wickets for his side in this format and he was their best bowler in the ODIs against the Windies with seven wickets in three matches. Mustafizur was also amongst the highest wicket-takers in that series and he will be backed by his team to push Sri Lanka on the back foot early in their innings.
BAN Recent Form
Bangladesh will be pleased with their recent ODI performances; they have won five out of the eight one-day internationals they have played so far this year. They are coming into the Asia Cup on the back of a 2-1 series win in the West Indies against the hosts. After winning the opening match of that series by 48 runs, Bangladesh faced a three-run defeat in the second match and then won the third and deciding game by 18 runs.
Bangladesh Predicted Playing 11
Tamim Iqbal, Liton Das, Mominul Haque, Shakib Al Hasan, Mushfiqur Rahim (wk), Mahmudullah, Mosaddek Hossain, Mehidy Hasan, Mashrafe Mortaza (c), Rubel Hossain, Mustafizur Rahman
Sri Lanka Team News & Playing 11
SL Team News
Sri Lanka have been dealt a big blow in the form of injury to their key batsman Dinesh Chandimal who has been ruled out of the Asia Cup with a finger injury. Niroshan Dickwella has replaced him in the squad and he is likely to take up the wicket-keeping duties ahead of Kusal Perera. Off-spinner Akila Dananjaya is set to miss at least the first couple of matches due to personal reasons which means Lasith Malinga could be a part of the playing eleven.
SL Key Players
In the absence of Dinesh Chandimal, the onus will be on the likes of Upul Tharanga, Kusal Perera and skipper Angelo Mathews to score the big runs for Sri Lanka. Tharanga has scored the most runs for the team in ODIs from this current squad and he even has a fifty at this venue. Perera and Mathews were both amongst the leading run-getters in the last series against South Africa with the latter topping the runs charts. Suranga Lakmal and Thisara Perera will be the main threats in this pace attack while Dilruwan Perera and Dhananjaya de Silva will be the skipper's go-to options when it comes to spin. Dilruwan has done a decent job for Sri Lanka across all formats and the off-spinner could cause problems for Bangladesh on this surface that seems conducive to spin bowling.
SL Recent Form
Sri Lanka have won five and lost as many one-day internationals out of the ten they have played this year. They played their last ODI series in South Africa - it was a five-match bilateral series against the hosts which they ended up losing 2-3. They lost the first three matches but managed to finish on a high with wins in the last two matches. Prior to that series, Sri Lanka won the tri-series at Dhaka involving Bangladesh and Zimbabwe.
Sri Lanka Predicted Playing 11
Upul Tharanga, Niroshan Dickwella (wk), Kusal Perera, Kusal Mendis, Angelo Mathews (c), Dhananjaya de Silva, Thisara Perera, Dasun Shanaka, Dilruwan Perera, Lasith Malinga, Suranga Lakmal
