Afghanistan Team News & Playing 11
Team News
The Afghanistan selection committee has announced a 16-man squad for the three-match T20 international series against Bangladesh. The team has been dealt a major blow as their frontline fast bowler Dawlat Zadran has been ruled out of the series with a knee injury he sustained during a training camp in India. The selectors have recalled opening batsman Najib Tarakai who last played for his country in March 2017 against Ireland. Young batsman Darwish Rasooli has also found a place in the T20I squad. Rasooli was a consistent performer in the recent First Class Tournament and was also impressive in the ICC U19 World Cup held in New Zealand early this year.
Key Players
Afghanistan's batting strength resides mainly in the likes of Asghar Stanikzai, Mohammad Shahzad and Mohammad Nabi. Shahzad has scored the most runs for the side in T20 internationals followed by Nabi and Stanikzai. Nabi, with an impressive strike rate of over 160, was the team's leading run-getter in the last T20I series against Zimbabwe in the UAE. The all-rounder has also taken the most wickets for Afghanistan in the shortest format and he together with Rashid Khan who is the world's no. 1 bowler in T20 cricket will form a threatening spin attack. Rashid is coming off a terrific IPL season and he is going to be the trump card for skipper Stanikzai. Emerging off-spinner Mujeeb Ur Rahman too was outstanding for the Kings XI Punjab and Bangladesh will be wary of him as well.
Recent Form
Afghanistan have shown impressive form in the game's shortest format with 13 wins in their past 16 matches. In their previous series, they did a 2-0 clean sweep over Zimbabwe in the UAE. Before that however, they faced defeat in each of the three games against the West Indies at Basseterre. Afghanistan have played ten T20 internationals in India and have won seven of those. This includes the 3-0 whitewash of Ireland last year in March.
Afghanistan Predicted Playing 11
Mohammad Shahzad (wk), Asghar Stanikzai (c), Usman Ghani/Samiullah Shenwari, Mohammad Nabi, Sharafuddin Ashraf, Najibullah Zadran, Shafiqullah Shafiq, Aftab Alam, Mujeeb Ur Rahman, Rashid Khan, Gulbadin Naib
Bangladesh Team News & Playing 11
Team News
Bangladesh's initial 15-member squad for the three-match T20 international series has now been reduced to 14 with injury to pace spearhead Mustafizur Rahman. The fast bowler had injured his toe during the IPL and it would take him almost three weeks for a full recovery. The team management has not announced his replacement as of yet.
Bangladesh have recalled batting all-rounder Mosaddek Hossain who had been out of action for a while due to an eye injury. Batsman Soumya Sarkar, despite his average recent performances, along with seamers Abu Hider and Abu Jayed have all been retained from the previous T20 series - the Nidahas Trophy - played in March in Sri Lanka. Nurul Hasan, Imrul Kayes and Taskin Ahmed (who is recovering from an injury) have been sidelined for this upcoming series.
Key Players
Tamim Iqbal is the leading run-getter for Bangladesh in T20 internationals with 1385 runs which includes a century and five half-centuries. While the left-handed batsman will be the key man for his side at the top, Mushfiqur Rahim who scored the most runs for the team in the recent tri-nation T20I series in Sri Lanka will be their biggest hopes in the middle order. All-rounders Shakib Al Hasan and Mahmudullah can make a big impact with both bat and ball. The former has taken the most wickets for Bangladesh in the shortest format and is also amongst the leading run-scorers. Rubel Hossain was their best bowler in that tri-series with seven wickets from five matches and he will be the main weapon in the team's pace attack in the absence of Mustafizur Rahman.
Recent Form
Bangladesh, of late, have struggled to win matches in the 20-overs format; they have lost 15 of their last 18 encounters. Their most recent T20 assignment was a tri-series played in Sri Lanka in March which also involved India. They defeated the hosts twice in that series but could not overcome India in their three attempts, including the final. Prior to that, they lost 0-2 in South Africa against the hosts before losing 0-2 at home against Sri Lanka.
Bangladesh Predicted Playing 11
Tamim Iqbal, Liton Das, Sabbir Rahman, Soumya Sarkar/Mosaddek Hossain, Mushfiqur Rahim (wk), Mahmudullah, Shakib Al Hasan (c), Mehidy Hasan, Rubel Hossain, Nazmul Islam, Abu Hider Rony
