Who will win Afghanistan vs West Indies, 1st ODI 2019?
Afghanistan’s first ODIs since the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup sees them ‘host’ West Indies in India, for a three-game series at Lucknow’s Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium. The series starts on November 6 and the live action begins at 14:00 local time.
Afghanistan lost all nine of their matches at the World Cup, including a final-game defeat to West Indies, and this tournament represents the start of their new chapter in ODI cricket – led by star man Rashid Khan.
For West Indies, their World Cup was not much better and they remain just one place above Afghanistan in ninth in the ICC ODI rankings. They have played one ODI series since the summer but lost to India, and started this tour with defeat in the warm-up match.

AFG vs WI Toss Prediction
West Indies won the toss and elected to bat first in the warm-up game in Lucknow but their batsmen struggled – the pitch may offer more for bowling first than expected, and Rashid Khan may be keen to exploit that.
AFG vs WI Weather Report
With very little wind and zero chance of rain, the forecast for Lucknow is great for cricket watching – only a little cloud will disrupt from a clear day, with temperatures in the high 20s.
AFG vs WI Pitch Condition
A lack of previous games at Lucknow makes it hard to gauge the wicket, but the warm-up game certainly saw the pitch lean far more to the bowlers than it did when India played West Indies here in 2018.

Afghanistan Team News & Playing 11
AFG Team News
Afghanistan have made wholesale changes to their one-day side, which is now led by Rashid Khan. Mohammad Shahzad and Aftab Alam have both been suspended for Code of Conduct breaches, while Dawlat Zadran, Hamid Hassan, Hashmatullah Shahidi, Noor Ali Zadran and Samiullah Shinwari are all missing from the squad which played at the World Cup. Karim Janat, Naveen-ul-Haq, Yamin Ahmadzai and Sharafuddin Ashraf could all be among the players drafted in for this first game if the warm-up match is any indication.
AFG Key Players
Rashid Khan: The newly-appointed captain remains Afghanistan’s star export and he comes into this series looking to add to the 131 wickets he has taken in 64 previous ODI innings. He averages 17.80 in the format and has an economy rate of 4.14 runs per over, while he is also closing in on 1,000 ODI runs.
Mujeeb Ur Rahman: Outshone Rashid at several points during the World Cup, and the 18-year-old remains in high demand as a key part of Afghanistan’s spin attack. His ODI record stacks up with 58 wickets in 36 innings.
Rahmat Shah: Top-scored for the Afghanistan XI in the warm-up game as he posted 47. He will be looking to add to his 15 half-centuries and four hundreds in ODI cricket, which have helped him to 2,255 runs in 66 previous innings.
AFG Team Form
Afghanistan have not played an ODI since their World Cup disappointment, where they lost all nine matches they played. The last of those was actually against the West Indies, where they were set 312 to win at Headingley, and Rahmat Shah (62) and Ikram Alikhil (86) got them off to a good start. Needing to up the run rate, however, they eventually fell to 288 all out to round off a miserable tournament.
Afghanistan Predicted Playing 11
Rahmat Shah, Gulbadin Naib, Ikram Alikhil (wk), Asghar Afghan, Karim Janat, Mohammad Nabi, Najibullah Zadran, Rashid Khan (c), Yamin Ahmadzai, Naveen-ul-Haq, Mujeeb Ur Rahman
West Indies Team News & Playing 11
WI Team News
West Indies have also changed their ODI captain since the World Cup, with Kieron Pollard taking over from Jason Holder in September. Pollard’s return to ODI cricket is not the only big selection decision, either, with Brandon King and former USA international Hayden Walsh Jr both earning maiden call-ups after starring in the Caribbean Premier League. Romario Shepherd looks the most likely potential debutant to play, however, after impressing in the warm-up game. Chris Gayle is absent, while Andre Russell and Sunil Narine are injured.
WI Key Players
Shai Hope: Man of the match when these teams last met after he scored 77, he still averages 47.33 in ODI cricket, having hit six centuries and 13 half-centuries in his 61 innings to date.
Sheldon Cottrell: The saluting pace bowler took 12 wickets in the Caribbean Premier League to continue his excellent personal form. He was also the stand-out West Indian bowler at the World Cup.
Romario Shepherd: Took his chance to impress in the warm-up game as he claimed 3-16 and is now pushing for an international debut as a result.
WI Team Form
West Indies’ only ODIs since the World cup, which they finished with a win against Afghanistan to end a run of six straight defeats, were against India at home in August. The first match was curtailed after just 13 overs by rain, while West Indies were bowled out for 210 replying to 279/7 to lose the second. In the third game, reduced to 35 overs, Chris Gayle hit 72 as West Indies posted 240/7, but India reached a revised target of 255 to win by six wickets with 15 balls to spare.
West Indies Predicted Playing 11
Evin Lewis, Shai Hope, Shimron Hetmyer, Nicholas Pooran (wk), Kieron Pollard (c), Roston Chase, Jason Holder, Keemo Paul, Sheldon Cottrell, Romario Shepherd, Alzarri Jospeh
Afghanistan vs West Indies Head to Head
West Indies’ win at the World Cup was only their second in six previous ODIs against Afghanistan, which included losing both matches against them as they both came through the World Cup qualifier.
Last time out, however, Evin Lewis, Shai Hope and Nicholas Pooran all scored half-centuries in a total of 311/6 for the West Indies, before Carlos Brathwaite’s 4-63 helped bowl Afghanistan out for 288 – despite Rahmat Shah and Ikram Alikhil’s own half-centuries.
