AFG vs AUS Betting Tips

  • Defending champions Australia's 2019 Cricket World Cup campaign starts against the lowest-ranked team in this year's tournament, Afghanistan.
  • Afghanistan did beat Pakistan in Bristol in the first of their two warm-up matches, however - proving they can improve on their only previous World Cup showing in 2015.
  • Australia have hit form at the right time though, winning both warm-up games to prove that too.

Afghanistan Team News & Playing 11

AFG Team News

Wicket-keeper batsman Mohammad Shahzad is an injury doubt for Afghanistan’s opening game after the big-hitting opener suffered a hamstring injury in their first warm-up game. Noor Ali Zadran opened in the second warm-up game, against England. Hazratullah Zazai also looked to be suffering with a hamstring problem in the first game but was back at the top of the order with Zadran for the second. Afghanistan’s biggest selection question will be whether they can find room for a third spinner in Mujeeb Ur Rahman or opt for another paceman.

AFG Key Players

Their rise up the world rankings has seen Afghanistan uncover some notable gems, not least Rashid Khan – the top-ranked all-rounder in ODI cricket. Khan took 2-27 in the warm-up win against Pakistan and has 125 wickets in 56 ODI innings.

Another gem is Hazratullah Zazai, who has made headlines for his big-hitting in the last 12 months. He scored a rapid 49 in the win against Pakistan, while his recent innings include an unbeaten 162 in a T20 thrashing of Ireland.Mohammad Nabi offers experience with bat and ball, meanwhile, and the return of Hamid Hassan in time for the World Cup 2019 means they have a genuine paceman in their attack too.

Hashmatullah Shahidi looks to have found batting form ahead of the tournament too, meanwhile – he hit unbeaten half-centuries in wins against Scotland and Pakistan.

AFG Team Form

Though they were thrashed in their final warm-up game against England – bowled out for 160 on their way to a nine-wicket defeat – Afghanistan laid down a marker with their three-wicket warm-up win against Pakistan.

Their tour of Britain and Ireland for this tournament started with victory against Scotland – Rahmat Shah’s century helping them to 269/3 in reply to 325/7 when the rain came, which earned a two-run win on the DLS method.

Afghanistan also played Ireland twice in Belfast, bouncing back from defeat in their first game by winning the second – scoring 305/7 and bowling the hosts out for 179.

Australia Team News & Playing 11

AUS Team News

After all three sat out of Australia’s opening warm-up game, Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummings and Glenn Maxwell returned against Sri Lanka and are likely to start the opening game. The biggest question since his selection has been whether David Warner will open with Aaron Finch. Usman Khawaja excelled at number two last time out, which could mean Warner bats three. If he does, Shaun Marsh may miss out altogether.

AUS Key Players

Steve Smith has proved his quality on his return to the Australia team. His century against England in the first warm-up match followed a run of big half-centuries in the warm-up series against New Zealand and unofficial match with West Indies.

Aaron Finch, Usman Khawaja and David Warner are competing for the two opening spots. The former two were integral to Australia’s success against India and Pakistan, while the latter was one of the star men of the IPL.

Glenn Maxwell is in good form at number five, batting well against New Zealand and offering a spin option with the ball too.

Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc lead the bowling attack, meanwhile. Cummins was in outstanding form against India and followed up his 14 wickets in that series with seven across two matches against New Zealand.

AUS Team Form

Australia won both of their official warm-up matches for the World Cup – Steve Smith’s century helping them beat England by 12 runs before Usman Khawaja led the chase of 240 to beat Sri Lanka by five wickets last time out.

They also played an unofficial warm-up match against West Indies and won that too – bowling them out for 229 on their way to a seven-wicket win. Australia previously beat New Zealand 2-1 in a warm-up series, to follow up their 5-0 whitewash of Pakistan in their most recent full ODI series.

Australia Predicted Playing 11

Aaron Finch, Usman Khawaja, David Warner, Steve Smith, Glenn Maxwell, Marcus Stoinis, Alex Carey, Nathan Coulter-Nile, Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Nathan Lyon
