Despite Virat Kohli being one of four batsmen to have passed 230 runs already in this year's competition, Royal Challengers Bangalore have won just two of their first five matches - Chennai Super Kings have won four and are second in the IPL table.

Brendan McCullum has sat out of the last two matches for Royal Challengers Bangalore, after scoring just four runs in the back-to-back home matches against Kings XI Punjab and Rajasthan Royals. Corey Anderson has been the beneficiary, and despite a golden duck against Mumbai Indians, the New Zealander bounced back to play his part in the win against Delhi Darevils with a 56-run partnership with AB de Villiers. After De Villiers roared back into form with his blistering 90 not out, Royal Challengers Bangalore may opt for the same line-up this time out – meaning Virat Kohli remaining at number three, and Manan Vohra opening the batting. Sarfaraz Khan was dropped for the win against the Daredevils, having scored just 11 runs in his three matches so far.

Virat Kohli leads the Royal Challengers Bangalore in more ways than one. As well as being captain, the Indian superstar has once again been his side’s leading batsman too. He has smashed two half-centuries on his way to 231 runs from the opening five games – including an unbeaten 92 against Mumbai Indians. South African AB de Villiers found his form last time out, meanwhile – his unbeaten 90 against Delhi Daredevils came from 39 balls and including ten fours and five sixes. With the ball, England all-rounder Chris Woakes went wicketless against Delhi, but still has eight so far in this year’s tournament. Umesh Yadav has also picked up eight, with a much better economy rate than Woakes too.

Royal Challengers Bangalore recorded just their second win of the 2018 IPL against Delhi Daredevils last time out – batting second, AB de Villiers’ blasted 90 from 39 balls as they chased down 175 to win with two overs remaining. Their only other victory came at home too, against Kings XI Punjab. They lost their opening game against Kolkata Knight Riders, however, and conceded more than 210 in consecutive games as they lost to both Rajasthan Royals and Mumbai Indians.

Young South African Lungi Ngidi returned home earlier in the month following the death of his father, and remains unavailable for the Chennai Super Kings. South Africa captain Faf du Plessis played his first game of this year’s IPL against the Hyderabad Sunrisers last time out, replacing international team-mate Imran Tahir in the starting line-up. That could spell bad news for England’s Sam Billings who, since a half-century in his opening game of this year’s IPL, has scored just 12 further runs. If Tahir returns, Billings may be the one to make way.

Shane Watson is one of two players to have scored a century so far in this year’s IPL, after his match-winning 106 from 57 balls opening the batting against Rajasthan Royals. He has scored 184 runs in total in the opening five game. Ambati Rayadu’s 79 against Hyderabad took him past 200 so far, meanwhile. Captain MS Dhoni has scored 139 at a strike rate of more than 150, meanwhile, and Suresh Raina is still to show his best form with just one half-century in the first four games. Watson has also been one of Chennai’s leading bowlers, with six wickets – the same as Deepak Chahar and Shardul Thakur. Chahar’s 3/15 from four overs was crucial to Chennai’s four-run win against Hyderabad last time out.

Chennai Super Kings have won four of their five matches on their return to the IPL, with only a four-run defeat to Kings XI Punjab spoiling their impressive record. Last time out they successfully defended 182/3 to beat Sunrisers Hyderabad by four runs. That followed their 64-run victory against Rajasthan Royals, during which they passed 200 for the second time in this year’s tournament – having done the same in a five-wicket win against Kolkata Knight Riders.
In 21 previous meetings between Royal Challengers and Chennai Super Kings in the Cauvery Derby, before the latter's two year ban from the IPL, Chennai won 13 and Bangalore claimed seven victories. In Bangalore, they have each won three games apiece. Chennai won four in a row before their ban - two in Bengaluru, one in Chennai and one in Ranchi. Their last meeting was the second qualifier of the 2015 competition - Chennai chased 139/8 to win by three wickets off the penultimate ball of the game.

Royal Challengers Bangalore are favourites to win against Chennai thanks to their home advantage, despite a below-par start to this year's tournament. With AB de Villiers firing again, RC Bangalore are 1.80 to win with Bet365. Chennai Super Kings are 2.15 to win with Betfair.
