The hosts handed out no new international caps in the opening game of the WT20I series on Saturday but their experienced side were still beaten by 5 wickets with 7 balls remaining. They must not lose this game to keep the series alive.
After an excellent WODI series against New Zealand Women, skipper Chamari Athapaththu was dismissed first ball of the match on Saturday. However, she is a very talented batter and we expect her to produce some crucial runs for her team in this game.
Experienced off-spinner Inoshi Priyadharshani was the pick of Sri Lanka Women’s bowling attack in the opening WT20I as she returned figures of 3-17 from her four overs. Udeshika Prabodhani and Kavisha Dilhari were the other bowlers to take wickets on Saturday.
Sri Lanka Women’s two game winning streak came to an end with the defeat in the first WT20I, however, they were not outplayed by New Zealand Women.
Chamari Athapaththu (c), Vishmi Gunaratne, Harshitha Samarawickrama, Nilakshi de Silva, Anushka Sanjeewani (wk), Kavisha Dilhari, Oshadi Ranasinghe, Hansima Karunaratne, Inoshi Priyadharshani, Inoka Ranaweera, Udeshika Prabodhani
After being beaten 2-1 in the WODI series prior to this WT20I series, New Zealand Women were desperate to get off to a winning start on Saturday. The performance was not perfect but they showed themselves to be stronger than their hosts with both the bat and ball. No injuries have been reported ahead of this match.
Chasing 107 to win, it was the familiar combination of Suzie Bates (44 runs from 47 balls) and Amelia Kerr (34 runs from 28 balls) who did the majority of the damage to Sri Lanka Women’s bowling attack. Skipper Sophie Devine made a 2-ball duck but will be determined to contribute in this WT20I.
New Zealand Women showed the depth in their bowling unit with eight players used across the 20 overs of Sri Lanka Women’s innings. Only Eden Carson, Leigh Kasperek and Amelia Kerr bowled 4 overs each and all three of them picked up 2 wickets apiece.
New Zealand Women are targeting their fourth successive WT20I victory on Monday. They have not lost in this format since February.
Suzie Bates, Bernadine Bezuidenhout (wk), Melie Kerr, Sophie Devine (c), Maddy Green, Georgia Plimmer, Hannah Rowe, Brooke Halliday, Lea Tahuhu, Leigh Kasperek, Eden Carson
Although New Zealand won the opening game of the series with 7 balls remaining, Sri Lanka Women will know that they were only one strong individual performance with either bat or ball from being very close to winning. Most pundits are expecting another tight contest on Monday but overall we think that New Zealand Women will again be too strong.
