Sri Lanka Team News & Playing 11
SL Team News
Several notable players are missing from the current Sri Lanka squad, including former captain Angelo Mathews, who was deemed not fit enough after causing two run outs in as many games at the Asia Cup. Niroshan Dickwella, a late call-up to the Asia Cup squad, retained his place for the rained-off first game, while Dinesh Chandimal returned as captain and fit-again Nuwan Pradeep was back in the line-up. With the second match being played at the same ground as the first, further changes seem unlikely.
SL Key Players
Nuwan Pradeep claimed the wicket of Jonny Bairstow in the brief bit of play possible in the first match, and showed how important he could be as he bowled 20 dot balls in the five overs he managed before rain stopped play.
The bowlers were a rare highlight during a disappointing Asia Cup campaign, with Lasith Malinga claiming five wickets – albeit he was expensive at Dambulla in the first match in this series – and Thisara Perera six. Perera’s tally includes a five-for against Afghanistan.
Kusal Perera twice reached 50 against South Africa in their most recent bilateral series, meanwhile – he has 207 runs in his last eight matches, scored at better than a run a ball.
SL Team Form
This series is Sri Lanka’s chance to bounce back from a poor Asia Cup campaign in the UAE. They were eliminated after two heavy defeats as they were bowled out for 124 by Bangladesh, losing by 137 runs, and then 158 in a 91-run defeat to Afghanistan.
Sri Lanka’s most recent bilateral series was against South Africa, at home, when they crashed to a 3-2 defeat. South Africa had actually wrapped up the series win with three wins in the first three games, but Akila Dananjaya’s 6-29 from nine overs in the final game did help the hosts finish on a high – South Africa all out for 121 in reply to 299/8.
Sri Lanka Predicted Playing 11
Niroshan Dickwella, Upul Tharanga, Dhananjaya de Silva, Kusal Perera, Dasun Shanaka, Dinesh Chandimal, Thisara Perera, Nuwan Pradeep, Akila Dananjaya, Lasith Malinga, Lakshan Sandakan
England Team News & Playing 11
ENG Team News
Olly Stone was handed his debut in the first ODI, with Liam Plunkett unavailable due to getting married and David Willey struggling with a back injury. Having not had chance to contribute, he will expect to feature again this time out. The other big selection decision was playing Liam Dawson as a third spinner, with Moeen Ali and Adil Rashid, at the expense of the Curran brothers. Elsewhere, Jason Roy started ahead of fellow big-hitting opener Alex Hales – as had been expected after the warm-up game.
ENG Key Players
Joe Root came into this one-day series on the back of two unbeaten centuries in his previous two ODIs, as he helped England come back to win 2-1 against India in July. He was then 90* in the warm-up game and 25* when the rain came last time out.
Eoin Morgan was the other not out batsman last time out, having also scored an unbeaten 90 in the warm-up and earned a red inker – 88 not out – in the deciding game against India. Jonny Bairstow and Jason Roy are the only other England batsmen to have had time in the middle so far on this tour, and both – despite not showing it yet in Sri Lanka – were in blistering form ahead of this series. Bairstow had hit 615 runs in his last ten games prior to the first ODI, while Jason Roy has now hit 440 in his last nine.
England’s spin bowlers will be key with the ball, with Moeen Ali having proved as much with a three-wicket haul in the warm-up game. Adil Rashid has 23 wickets in the last ten ODIs in which he has bowled meanwhile – form that earned him a test recall in the summer. Add to that Liam Dawson, who looks set to form the third part of the spin attack, and England have plenty of options.
ENG Team Form
England are bidding for a ninth consecutive bilateral ODI series win and arrived in Sri Lanka on the back of victories against Australia and India in the English summer. Though they lost a one-off match against Scotland in the summer too, they have otherwise been in superb form ahead of next year’s World Cup.
The stunning run of form included whitewashing Australia in June – their five wins including the record-breaking 481/6 they scored in a 242-run win at Trent Bridge.
India brought them back down to earth on the same ground, winning the first match of their series by eight wickets, but Joe Root led the England comeback. The Yorkshireman hit unbeaten centuries in both of the next two games to lead England to another series win – 113* out of 322/7 in the second game, before Liam Plunkett’s 4-46 led England to an 86-run win, and then 100* as England chased 257 to win by eight wickets.
England Predicted Playing 11
Jason Roy, Jonny Bairstow, Joe Root, Eoin Morgan, Ben Stokes, Jos Buttler, Moeen Ali, Chris Woakes, Liam Dawson, Adil Rashid, Olly Stone
