South Africa vs England 2nd ODI Match Prediction

England need to hit back in the second match of this three-game series if they want to avoid losing their first ODI series since being crowned world champions. The second game of the series takes place in Durban, at Kingsmead, on February 7 and the live action starts at 13:00 local time.

Joe Denly scored 87 from 103 balls last time out to revive England last time out, after they had fallen to 131/6, but their score of 258/8 was still well below par. Quinton de Kock (107) and Temba Bavuma (98) put on 173 for the second South African wicket in reply and a Proteas win was never in doubt as a result.

Tom Banton, Matt Parkinson, JJ Smuts and Lutho Sipamla all made their ODI debuts in that match and there are other uncapped players on both sides who could feature in these next two matches too, as both teams rebuild after contrasting fortunes at the World Cup.

Toss Prediction

South Africa finally won a toss against England last time out and elected to field first and they may opt for the same with dew a factor in this second ODI.

Weather Report

Traditionally prone to thunderstorms, there is plenty of rain on the forecast for Durban for this second match of the series. With humidity high too, this could be a total washout.

Pitch Condition

Kingsmead has returned to being a faster wicket this year – it slowed down last season – and the batsman should thrive if they somehow get lucky with the rain.

South Africa Team News & Playing 11

SA Team News

Lutho Sipamla and JJ Smuts both made their ODI debuts last time out, while Bjorn Fortuin, Janneman Malan and Kyle Verreynne are all awaiting their maiden ODI opportunities. Malan could play instead of Reeza Hendricks – the only batsman to fall short last time out – if South Africa do opt for changes.

SA Key Players

Quinton de Kock: Led from the front last time out as he hit 107 from 113 balls at the top of the order, including 11 fours and one six, to ensure South Africa’s victory was never in doubt. He passed 5,000 ODI runs in the process.

Rassie van der Dussen: Not enough time to add an eighth ODI half-century in his 15th innings in the format last time out, but his unbeaten 38 does mean his average climbed to 78.

Tabraiz Shamsi: Now stepping up to lead the South African spin attack in place of Imran Tahir, he shone on his first assignment as he took 3-38 from his ten overs last time out.

SA Team Form

While their World Cup was ultimately a disappointment, victories in their last two matches of the tournament and then another in the first match of this series does mean South Africa have now won three in a row. Quinton de Kock’s century and Temba Bavuma’s 98 ensured a Proteas’ victory never looked in doubt last time out as they comfortably chased 259 to win for the loss of just three wickets.

Wicket-keeper(s)

Quinton de Kock proved his worth with a fine century for South Africa last time out, while Jonny Bairstow is still key for England even if he didn’t show it last time out. He did hit a century in the warm-up game though. Both are worth selecting, given their open for their respective teams too.

Batsmen

Each of the four top-priced batsman are worth selecting if they play up to their reputations – Joe Root, Jason Roy, Eoin Morgan and Rassie van der Dussen all boasting excellent ODI records. But Temba Bavuma and Joe Denly – who is, in truth, an all-rounder too – are key players too and proved their worth last time out. Captain Morgan may have to be the one who makes way if you want to afford the lower-priced Bavuma and Denly.

All-rounders

Chris Woakes proved his all-round worth last time out and, though he is nine credits, he is worth selecting as your sole all-rounder.

Bowlers

That does mean you have to knock something back for the bowlers, however, and Adil Rashid and Lungi Ngidi are realistically out of reach at nine credits. Chris Jordan and Tom Curran are both 8.5 credits for England, however, and both were in good form in the BBL before this tour, while Tabraiz Shamsi and Beuran Hendricks are that price for South Africa. One from each team would be a good balanced selection and leave eight credits for Lutho Sipamla to complete your team after his ODI debut last time out.

Captain/vice-captain

Quinton de Kock starred in the last game, highlighting just how important he is for South Africa. That form is hard to ignore and he is again a top choice for captain. Tabraiz Shamsi starred with the ball, but there are plenty of options for vice-captain and Chris Woakes form with bat and ball could make him an interesting outside pick and likewise Joe Denly.

England Team News & Playing 11

ENG Team News

England’s team has a very different look to their World Cup winning side, with Mark Wood, Ben Stokes and Jos Buttler rested, Jofra Archer injured, Liam Plunkett overlooked and Adil Rashid not risked last time out. Matt Parkinson and Tom Banton made their ODI debuts last time out and there was a long-awaited return to the 50-over format for Chris Jordan. All three could be handed another chance in the second game of the series, while Saqib Mahmood is also pushing for an ODI debut after replacing Archer in the squad.

ENG Key Players

Jason Roy: Set the tone with 32 at the top of the innings last time out, in a 51-run partnership with Jonny Bairstow. The big-hitting opener has scored 18 ODI half-centuries and nine centuries and averages 42.66 in the format.

Eoin Morgan: The England captain is closing in on 7,500 ODI runs and boasts an average just below 40 in the format. He has reached 50 on 59 occasions in total, converting 13 of those into centuries.

Chris Woakes: Played his 100th ODI last time out, and he has 143 wickets to his name in the format, as well as a useful 1,226 runs from 69 innings down the order – including four half-centuries. He scored 40 and took 1-36 last time out to prove his all-round worth.

ENG Team Form

This is England’s first ODI series since being crowned world champions with their dramatic win against New Zealand at Lord’s in a super over. With a much-changed team they fell well short last time out, however – posting 258/8 which owed much to Joe Denly’s 87. In reply, they took just three wickets as South Africa cruised to victory.
