NZW Team News

Caitlin Gurrey and Rosemary Mair made their WT20I debuts in the first game of the series. Anna Peterson has been called into the squad in place of injured Bernadine Bezuidenhout but was one of two unused players for the first match along with Hayley Jensen. Frances Mackay’s injury in the first match means one of the two are likely to come in for the match in Auckland. In Bezuidenhout’s absence, Katey Martin was behind the stumps.

NZW Key Players

Sophie Devine top-scored in the first match, scoring 62 from 48 balls at the top of the order. It continued the form she had shown in the Women’s Big Bash League, where she scored 556 runs in 13 matches for Adelaide Strikers, including four half-centuries and a top score of 99 not out.

Suzie Bates was also in good form in the WBBL, scoring 421 runs in 14 innings for the Strikers, including three half-centuries. She was also New Zealand’s top run scorer at the Women’s World T20, with 161 runs from her four innings.

Amy Satterthwaite’s 33 last time out, and economical bowling to claim 1-3 from nine balls, continued the form she showed in the one-day series, meanwhile. She scored 31, 71 and 66* in the three 50-over matches.

With the ball, Lea Tahuhu claimed 3-20 from her four overs, including a double-wicket maiden, to turn the game New Zealand’s way and also took 2-18 when the teams last met, at the World T20. All-rounder Leigh Kasparek took 2-25 last time out, having also taken eight wickets at the World T20.

NZW Team Form

These are New Zealand’s first T20 matches since the World Cup, where they won two and lost two of their four group games to miss out on a place in the semi-finals.At the World Cup, they started with a heavy defeat to India, scoring 160/9 in reply to 194/5, and were then dismissed for 120 chasing Australia’s 153/7.

Jess Watkin and Amelia Kerr each took three wickets to bowl Pakistan out for 90 in a 54-run win next up, however, and they finished on a high when Leigh Kasparek (3-19), Lea Tahuhu (2-17) and Kerr (2-18) restricted Ireland to 79/9 in the final game, and Sophie Devine hit a half-century as New Zealand chased that down in just 7.3 overs.

IND Women Team News & Playing 11

INDW Team News

After Mithali Raj captained India to victory in the ODI series, Harmanpreet Kaur is in charge for the T20s. Priya Punia made her WT20I debut last time out and slotted straight in at the top of the batting order. Anuja Patil, Arundhati Reddy and Radha Yadav also started the first game, having joined the squad for the T20 leg of this tour.

INDW Key Players

Smriti Mandhana reached 50 from just 22 balls in the first match – a new Indian record for fastest WT20I half-century – to continue her brilliant batting form. Mandhana also scored 105 and 90* in the first two WODIs to lead India to victory in that series. She also scored 178 runs in five matches at the Women’s World T20.

Captain Harmanpreet Kaur scored five more runs in that tournament, thanks largely to her 51-ball 103 in their opening match against New Zealand. Kaur also scored 310 runs, including two half-centuries, for Sydney Thunder in the Women’s Big Bash League. On that occasion, Mandhana scored eight runs more.Jemimah Rodrigues shared a record-breaking partnership with Kaur in that match against New Zealand, on her way to 59, and – after scoring an unbeaten 81 in the first ODI of this tour, she added 39 last time out. The teenager has already hit four half-centuries in her 16 WT20I innings.

With the ball, teenager Radha Yadav was their star at the World Cup with eight wickets and an economy rate of 5.75 runs per over. She has 18 wickets in 15 T20 internationals in total. Poonam Yadav, who also took six wickets in the ODI series and eight at the World T20, has 70 in 49 appearances in T20 internationals in total.

INDW Team Form

India were the form team at the World T20, only to fall at the semi-final stage after a rare poor batting performance. Combined with their defeat in the first game of this series, it means they have now lost their last two T20 matches.

At the World Cup, they started by posting 194/5 from their 20 overs against New Zealand, as Harmanpreet Kaur smashed a century and Jemimah Rodrigues hit 59 as they claimed a 34-run win. Victories over Pakistan and India followed, before Smriti Mandhana’s 83 and Anuja Patil’s 3-15 with the ball led them to an eye-catching 48-run win against Australia.

In the semi-finals, however, they collapsed from 43/1 at the end of the powerplay to 112 all out in the final over as England claimed an eight-wicket win to end India’s tournament.

In this series, Sharma and Kohli both hit half-centuries in the third match as India claimed their series win, but it has been the bowlers who have impressed most.
