New Zealand Team News & Playing 11

NZ Team News

Jimmy Neesham’s injury in the third ODI means the all-rounder has been replaced by Doug Bracewell in the 13-man New Zealand squad. The hosts have rested several players, including captain Kane Williamson, Trent Boult and Colin de Grandhomme. Tim Southee will lead the team, while Scott Kuggeleijn receives a first call-up and Mitchell Santner and Henry Nicholls return to contention.

NZ Key Players

While several key players have been rested, New Zealand will still open the batting with Martin Guptill and Colin Munro. Guptill smashed 138 in the first ODI at Mount Maunganui, while his most recent T20 innings saw him hit an unbeaten 71 for Auckland in the Super Smash. Munro, on the other hand, scored 87 in the second ODI and is looking for a fifth career century in the shortest format of the game.

Ross Taylor is in the middle order, meanwhile, after scores of 54, 90 and 137 in the ODI series whitewash of the Sri Lankan tourists.

Tim Southee captains the team – he has 63 wickets in 54 T20i matches so far in his career – and could lead the attack with Ish Sodhi, who claimed eight wickets in the three ODIs with his leg-spin. Potential new cap Scott Kuggeleijn has taken ten Super Smash wickets so far, meanwhile – including 4-18 for Northern Districts against Auckland.

NZ Team Form

New Zealand have won just one of their last ten T20 internationals, most recently suffering a 3-0 whitewash against Paksistan in the UAE. Prior to that, they won just one of their five matches in the T20 Tri Series with Australia and England at in February 2018.

Against Pakistan, they lost the first match by just two runs – falling just short of Pakistan’s 148/6 despite Colin Munro’s 58 and an unbeaten 42 from 26 balls by Ross Taylor. The second game was similarly close – Munro and Corey Anderson both scored 44 but Pakistan chased 154 to win by six wickets with two balls to spare. Finally, however, New Zealand were bowled out for just 119 (of which Kane Williamson scored 60 from 38 balls) in reply to 166/3.

New Zealand Predicted Playing 11

Martin Guptill, Colin Munro, Glenn Phillips, Ross Taylor, Henry Nicholls, Tim Siefert, Doug Bracewell, Tim Southee, Ish Sodhi, Lockie Ferguson, Scott Kuggeleijn

Sri Lanka Team News & Playing 11

SL Team News

Sri Lanka have the same squad as selected for the ODI series – so Sandeera Samarawickrama in for the injured Lasith Malinga. Notable changes from the defeat to England in their most recent T20 international include franchise star Isuru Udana, Kamindu Mendis and Amila Aponso all missing out.

SL Key Players

If Thisara Perera can continue the form he showed at the end of the ODI series, Sri Lanka could produce a big score. He hit 140 from 74 balls in the second ODI, including 13 sixes, and then backed that up with 80 from 63 balls in the final game. He also hit a half-century in Sri Lanka’s last T20 international, against England.

His batting was one of few highlights in the series for Sri Lanka, who failed to bat out their 50 overs once, while Lasith Malinga’s seven wickets ensured a rare highlight with the ball. He claimed 2-30 in the aforementioned T20 international defeat to England too and has 92 wickets in 69 T20 internationals.

SL Team Form

Sri Lanka’s last six T20 internationals have all been played at Colombo but they have only won one of the last five. That win was in a one-off game against South Africa, and Lakshan Sandakan claimed 3-19 from four overs as the tourists were bowled out for 98 – Sri Lanka going on to win by three wickets with four overs remaining.

They lost their most recent match, however – falling 30 runs short of England’s 187/8, despite Thisara Perera hammering six sixes in a knock of 57 from 31 balls in the middle order.

Sri Lanka Predicted Playing 11

Niroshan Dickwella, Danushka Gunathilaka, Kusal Perera, Kusal Mendis, Dasun Shanaka, Sadeera Samarawickrama, Thisara Perera, Lakshan Sandakan, Seekkuge Prasanna, Lasith Malinga, Dushmantah Chameera

New Zealand vs Sri Lanka Head to Head

New Zealand and Sri Lanka have played out 15 T20 internationals against each other, with New Zealand winning seven and Sri Lanka six. There has been one tie and one no result. New Zealand won the last two – on Sri Lanka’s tour in 2016, but Sri Lanka beat New Zealand at the 2014 World Cup before that, bowling them out for 60 in reply to 119.

Martin Guptill and Kane Williamson both hit half-centuries and Trent Boult claimed 3-21 from four overs in a three-run New Zealand win (182/4 vs 179/9) in the first of the two most recent matches. New Zealand then completed a series win in blistering style – and despite 81 not out from 49 balls in a total of 142/8 by Angelo Mathews. Guptill (63 from 25 balls) and Colin Munro (50* from 14) both went beserk in the reply, and New Zealand won after just ten overs of the reply.

New Zealand vs Sri Lanka Betting Odds

While neither are in good T20 form, Sri Lanka have been poor in all formats of late and New Zealand are therefore favourites to win – Bet365 offering 1.44 on the hosts, and Betfair pricing them at 1.40.

Part of that is down to the fact Colin Munro and Martin Guptill – who led the charge in the most recent T20 international between these two nations – will open the New Zealand batting. They are 1.66 with Bet365 to post the highest opening partnership.

Guptill is 3.30 to be New Zealand’s top run scorer, while Colin Munro is 3.40. Ross Taylor is in outstanding form, meanwhile and – if he is called upon – his price of 5.00 could provide a decent return. He is lower in the batting order, however.

That is the same reason for in-form Thisara Perera – who was Sri Lanka’s top scorer in the last two ODIs and their most recent T20i – being priced as high as 7.00 to top score for the tourists with Betfair.

🏆 New Zealand vs Sri Lanka Prediction

New Zealand may have won just one of their last ten T20 internationals, but Sri Lanka’s slide down the world rankings reflects their poor form in all formats of the game at the moment.

Final Verdict: Back New Zealand to beat Sri Lanka at 1.44 with Bet365 and 1.40 with Betfair.
