New Zealand are favorites to win
New Zealand defeated Sri Lanka by 21 runs in the second one-day international at Mount Maunganui to take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-game series. The visitors will now look for a consolation win in this inconsequential third and final ODI to be played on January 8 at the Saxton Oval in Nelson. Live telecast of the match is scheduled to begin at 11 AM local time.

Toss is going to be key at the Saxton Oval. Out of the nine completed one-day internationals played at this venue, seven have been won by the side bowling first. Since the wicket here tends to become relatively easier for batting after the first period of play, the toss-winning skipper in this match will probably elect to bowl first.

Having already won the series, New Zealand might give their premier fast bowlers Tim Southee and Trent Boult a breather and replace them with Lockie Ferguson and Doug Bracewell who sat out the first two matches. The rest of their line-up is expected to remain unchanged. The hosts don't have any injury issues to deal with ahead of the third ODI.
New Zealand's entire top-order seems to be in good form with Martin Guptill, Colin Munro, Kane Williamson and Ross Taylor all having scored big in this series. In the first ODI, Guptill hit a magnificent 138 while skipper Williamson smashed 76. Both have scored the most runs for their country at this ground in ODIs with 250 and 349 runs respectively. Even James Neesham has scored 111 runs in the series, making him the key man in the middle order. He has also taken five wickets from the two matches and so he will be one of the players to watch out for with the ball as well. Ish Sodhi is the go-to man for the Kiwis when it comes to spin. The leg-spinner has five wickets in the series and that too at a healthy economy rate. Lockie Ferguson, who took a couple in the opening game, has four wickets from the two ODIs he has played at this ground.
New Zealand have now won four and lost as many of their last eight completed one-day internationals. Their performance with the bat has been superb in the ongoing series - the hosts scored 300+ in both the matches. However, the same cannot be said about their performance with the ball as they allowed Sri Lanka to reach 326 and 298 in the respective two matches. The Kiwis were very sloppy in the field last time, dropping as many as six catches.

Sri Lanka may be tempted to make a few changes to their line-up following defeats in the first two games. The visitors could bring all-rounder Dasun Shanaka in place of a misfiring Asela Gunaratne who has scored just 17 runs in the series. Fast bowler Dushmantha Chameera too is expected to be given a game and Seekkuge Prasanna seems the most likely candidate to make way for him in the playing eleven.
Danushka Gunathilaka holds the key to Sri Lanka's batting. The opener has scored 43 and 71 in the respective matches of the series and he even has a half-century in his only ODI innings at this ground. His partner Niroshan Dickwella and Kusal Perera who hit 76 and 102 respectively in the first match will also be expected to make significant contributions at the top of the order. Thisara Perera was on fire last time with his whirlwind knock of 140 off just 74 balls and the all-rounder will gain huge confidence from that performance. Dushmantha Chameera is likely to play this game. The fast bowler has three ODI wickets at this ground and his job will be to complement Lasith Malinga and Nuwan Pradeep with the ball. Malinga has looked the most impressive of the seamers while Lakshan Sandakan, who has been pretty economical, will be the biggest threat amongst the spinners.
Saturday's 21-run loss at Mount Maunganui was Sri Lanka's seventh defeat in their last eight completed one-day internationals. They last tasted success in this format in October last year when they recorded a massive 219-run victory over England at Colombo. The visitors will be extremely disappointed with their middle-order batting in the last game as they lost five wickets in the space of five overs. Even more worrying is their bowling attack that has looked toothless so far in this series.
Danushka Gunathilaka, Niroshan Dickwella (wk), Kusal Perera, Kusal Mendis, Dinesh Chandimal, Dasun Shanaka, Thisara Perera, Lakshan Sandakan, Lasith Malinga (c), Dushmantha Chameera, Nuwan Pradeep
New Zealand and Sri Lanka have now played 89 one-day internationals against each other. The former have won 47 of those while the latter have won 41 with one of the matches having resulted in a tie.
New Zealand and Sri Lanka have faced each other two times at the Saxton Oval in the fifty-over format with both winning once each.
The last time these two countries met in an ODI at this ground was back in December 2015. New Zealand put up 276/8 on the scoreboard after opting to bat first but could not defend that total as Sri Lanka pulled off the chase in the 47th over to win the match by eight wickets.

New Zealand are heavy favorites to whitewash Sri Lanka at extremely short odds of 1.24 on Betfair and 1.20 on both Betway and Bet365. The tourists once again find themselves as massive underdogs amongst the bookmakers and they are being offered at a much higher price of 4.33 on Betway, 4.50 on Bet365 and 5 on Betfair.
New Zealand, after dominating Sri Lanka in the second test, have registered convincing victories in both the ODIs as well. The visitors have tried everything they could but nothing has seemed to go their way. Their bowling has been flat and their middle-order batting looks fragile. Moreover, the hosts will be playing at a ground where they have a strong ODI record. They have played six matches here and have won five of those. Interestingly, their only defeat here came at the hands of Sri Lanka which is perhaps the only thing that will make the visitors feel optimistic. New Zealand have clearly been the better side and we expect them to wrap up the series with a 3-0 clean sweep.
Final Verdict: Back New Zealand to beat Sri Lanka in the third ODI at 1.24 with Betfair and 1.20 with both Betway and Bet365.
