New Zealand won the toss in the first ODI and elected to bat first in the day-night game. That tactic proved a success and might be repeated.

Wicket-keeper Tim Seifert made his New Zealand ODI debut in the first match of the three-game series with Tom Latham being rested. Matt Henry was preferred to Tim Southee as the third seamer, meanwhile, but he was expensive and Southee could be reinstated to prove his worth in this World Cup year.
New Zealand’s star players delivered in the first ODI – not least opener Martin Guptill, who scored 138 from 139 and became their fourth-highest ODI run scorer of all time in the process. His man-of-the-match innings was the 14th ODI century of his career.
Captain Kane Williamson (76 from 74 balls) and Ross Taylor (54 from 37 balls) also hit useful half-centuries. Williamson and Guptill shared a second-wicket stand of 163. Williamson now has 337 runs in his last nine ODI innings while, during the same period, Taylor has hit 584 runs at an average of 97.33. He previously hit 80 and 86* in his two ODI innings against Pakistan in November.
Staking a claim to join them in the World Cup starting XI was Jimmy Neesham, who backed up his good recent domestic form with an unbeaten 47 with the bat and 3-38 with the ball. His quick-fire knock including five sixes in an over as he took just 13 balls to amass his score.
Also in the wickets were Trent Boult (2-65), Lockie Ferguson (2-65) and Ish Sodhi (2-53). Ferguson took 11 wickets in the ODI series against Pakistan too, from just three matches and now has 16 in his last seven in total. Boult has 16 in ten.
New Zealand drew their most recent ODI series, in the UAE against Pakistan. Ross Taylor hit 80 in the first ODI and Trent Boult and Lockie Ferguson each claimed three wickets in a 47-run win, but they could not back it up – restricted to 209/9 in the second match despite Taylor’s unbeaten 86. Ferguson took three more wickets in the reply, but Pakistan won by six wickets with 9.3 overs to spare. Ferguson then claimed 5-45 from his ten overs in the reply but rain cut short New Zealand’s reply to ensure no result and a drawn series.
Prior to that, New Zealand’s most recent ODI series was against England. They won the first match but only one of the next four as England claimed a 3-2 away series victory. It ended a run of straight wins for New Zealand, who had previously whitewashed Pakistan 5-0 and West Indies 3-0 before England’s visit.

Sadeera Samarawickrama was handed a reprieve and a place in the squad after Angelo Mathews pulled out injured due to injury sustained in the second test but was not selected for the first ODI. Lasith Malinga leads the team but there could be a bit of rotation as Sri Lanka look to end their poor run of form and find a starting XI for the World Cup.
There is arguably just a small handful of players guaranteed World Cup places for Sri Lanka. Niroshan Dickwella is one of those, having scored 52, 95 and 76 in his last three ODI innings. Kusal Perera staked his claim for a place meanwhile, having failed to really impress against England. He scored 102 – his fourth ODI hundred – in the first ODI.
With the ball, captain Lasith Malinga leads the way – he claimed 2-78 in the first ODI, while the series against England included his 5-44 in the second match at Dambulla – his eighth ODI five-wicket haul. The veteran paceman also claimed 4-23 in the Asia Cup against Bangladesh in September.
Sri Lanka are in poor form in ODI cricket. They lost the first match of this series having previously been beaten 3-1 on home soil by in-form England in their last home series – their only win of a rain-affected series was the dead-rubber fifth match. That followed defeats to Afghanistan and Bangladesh (and a subsequent early exit) from the Asia Cup, while before that they lost 3-2 to South Africa – a scoreline which again flattered the hosts, considering they were 3-0 down after three matches. In fact, Sri Lanka have not won a bilateral ODI series since beating Ireland in 2016.

There have now been 96 ODIs between New Zealand and Sri Lanka, with New Zealand’s win at the Bay Oval in the first match of this series their 46th. Sri Lanka have won 41, while there has been one tie and eight matches curtailed by the weather.
Prior to this series, their most recent ODI matches were on Sri Lanka’s tour of New Zealand in December/January 2015/16. New Zealand won the first two games before Sri Lanka hit back thanks to an eight-wicket win, chasing 277 to win the third game. The rain cut the foirth game short before, at Mount Maunganui, Martin Guptill hit 102 from 109 balls and Kane Williamson and Ross Taylor weighed in with half-centuries in a total of 294/5 for the hosts. In reply, Angelo Mathews hit 95 but Matt Henry’s 5-40 and Trent Boult’s 3-43 helped New Zealand to a 36-run win and 3-1 series victory.
After winning the first ODI, New Zealand are now just 1.25 with Bet365 to win the second game and claim a series win. With Sri Lanka out of form, the tourists are 4.00 to win.
Martin Guptill loves playing at the Bay Oval against Sri Lanka, scoring a century in the first ODI, just as he did in the final game of Sri Lanka's last tour to New Zealand. Guptill is 3.60 to be New Zealand's top batsman. In-form Ross Taylor is 5.00, meanwhile.
Lockie Ferguson is in form with the ball, meanwhile, and he is 5.00 to be their leading bowler in the third ODI. For Sri Lanka, captain Lasith Malinga leads the way at 3.25.
New Zealand claimed a fairly comfortable victory in the first ODI and, with Martin Guptill, Kane Williamson and Ross Taylor all scoring runs in that game, they can continue that form to claim a series win.
Final Verdict: Back New Zealand to beat Sri Lanka at 1.25 with Bet365
