Who will win Australia Women vs Sri Lanka Women, 1st T20?
World champions Australia are big favourites against out-of-form Sri Lanka for this first WT20i of their three-game series at the North Sydney Oval. The first match gets underway on September 29, at 14:40 local time.
Australia, the world T20 champions, have continued their dominant form in the shortest format since. They beat England in the WT20i leg of their successful Women’s Ashes defence, and most recently thrashed West Indies too. Alyssa Healy’s batting and some excellent bowling, particularly from Jess Jonassen, helped them to some dominant victories.
For Sri Lanka, they have played six WT20 internationals since the World Cup and lost them all. Their batting has fallen short and their bowling too – their most recent series, against England, saw them claim just six wickets across the three games.

AUSW vs SLW Toss Prediction
Australia only won the toss once in their three WT20i matches against the West Indies so they are due this one. They fielded first in all three of those wins, so they may elect to continue with that tactic.
AUSW vs SLW Weather Report
Temperatures will be in the high teens in Sydney on Sunday but, more importantly, there is zero chance of rain forecast and conditions are set to be mostly sunny. There may be a bit of wind around, however.
AUSW vs SLW Pitch Condition
The North Syndey Oval was criticised for being benign a couple of years ago, which will favour batting over bowling. The groundstaff will be hoping for a bit more life in the wicket after that criticism, however.

AUS Women Team News & Playing 11
AUSW Team News
Australia have named an unchanged squad for this tour from the one which travelled to the West Indies. It could be the same 11 that played the first two games in the Caribbean therefore, which would mean Tayla Vlaeminck, Nicola Carey and Heather Graham having to remain patient for now. Vlaeminck did play the final game of the series against the West Indies, but Ashleigh Gardner could return to face Sri Lanka.
AUSW Key Players
Alyssa Healy: The wicket-keeper-batsman was back to her best in the Caribbean, with scores of 122, 58 and 61 in the WODI series and then 12, 58* and 38 in the WT20is. She boasts a strike rate of 123.60 in WT20i cricket.
Ellyse Perry: Australia’s star all-rounder continues to impress in every format. In T20i cricket, she averages 30.44 with the bat and 19.25 with the ball, with her wicket in the series against the West Indies her 104th in WT20i cricket.
Jess Jonassen: Claimed 4-7 in Australia’s most recent WT20i match – the win against West Indies, where she took seven wickets in the series in all. She also claimed four wickets in the three WT20i matches against England.
AUSW Team Form
Australia come into this series on the back of a dominant win against West Indies, having previously beaten England to win the Women’s Ashes once again. The latter included a 2-1 victory in the T20i leg of the series, while they whitewashed West Indies 3-0 most recently.
The final game of the series saw Australia record their biggest win in terms of balls remaining in WT20is – they needed just 7.3 overs to score 83/1 in a nine-wicket win at Bridgetown, with Alyssa Healy leading the way with more excellent batting form. Jess Jonassen had earlier taken 4-7 from her four overs to set up the win.

SLW Team News
From their most recent WT20i series in March – the 3-0 series defeat to England – Sri Lanka have added Yashoda Mendis, Ama Kanchana, Udeshika Prabodhani to their squad. Chamari Atapattu will lead the team. Umesha Thimashini and Madushika Methtananda miss out from the team which played their most recent game.
SLW Key Players
Chamari Atapattu: Finished the Kia Super League in good all-round form for Loughborough Lightining, with some decent innings and some useful wickets in the final few games.
Hansima Karunaratne: In a series in which nobody really stood out for Sri Lanka, the recalled all-rounder at least showed a little of what she can offer with the bat against England.
Oshadi Ranasinghe: The pace bowler took 2-28 in Sri Lanka’s most recent WT20i to move to 26 WT20i wickets. More impressive is her economy rate of 6.62 runs per over.
SLW Team Form
Sri Lanka have played two bilateral series since the Women’s World T20 and lost them both without winning a game. They were beaten 3-0 in South Africa and then suffered the same fate at home to England, with their batting coming up well short on too many occasions. The gulf between the Sri Lankans and the other top women’s teams has been too vast.
SL Women Predicted Playing 11
Chamari Atapattu, Yashoda Mendis, Hanisma Karunaratne, Shashikala Siriwardene, Oshadi Ranasinghe, Harshitha Madavi, Dilani Manodara, Nilakshi de Silva, Udeshika Prabodhani, Sugandika Kumari, Achini Kulasuriya
AUS Women vs SL Women Head to Head
Australia have won both previous T20 internationals they have played against Sri Lanka, with both matches having been played in 2016. They were in dominant form both times – Elyse Villani and Meg Lanning hitting unbeaten half-centuries in a nine-wicket win (chasing 124) at the World T20, before Kristen Beams 3-11 from four overs helped them restrict Sri Lanka to 59/8 on their way to a ten-wicket win later that year.

AUS Women vs SL Women Betting Odds
With Australia in excellent form and Sri Lanka’s women nowhere near the standard of the top teams, the hosts are huge favourites for this series.
AUSW Bet365 Odds
- AUSW to Win the Match: Australia Women are 1.05 favourites to beat Sri Lanka with Bet365.
- AUSW Top Batsman: Alyssa Healy was in fine form in the Caribbean and she is priced at 3.25 with Bet365 to be Australia’s top team batsman again. Captain Meg Lanning can also be backed at 3.25, while Beth Mooney is listed at 4.33. Given how rarely Australia have needed their batting further down the order lately, it is no surprise to see Rachael Haynes as high as 13.00. Ellyse Perry can be backed at 5.00, while Ashleigh Gardner is 9.00.
- AUSW Top Bowler: Perry is 4.00 to be Australia’s top team bowler with Bet365, meanwhile, as is Megan Schutt. Jess Jonassen was their star last time out, however – she claimed 4-7 in their most recent WT20i against West Indies and took seven wickets in the series. She is well worth backing at 5.00. Delissa Kimmince and Georgia Wareham are both 5.50 with Bet365, meanwhile.
SLW Bet365 Odds
- SLW to Win the Match: Sri Lanka Women are huge 9.00 outsiders to beat Australia in Sydney with Bet365.
- SLW Top Batsman: Having finished the Kia Super League in better form, Chamari Atapattu – the Sri Lankan captain – is 3.00 to be their top team batsman with Bet365. Hansima Karunaratne – their top scorer in their most recent match – is 4.50.
- SLW Top Bowler: Wickets were rare in the series against England, but Oshadi Ranasinghe finished with good figures in the final game and her odds of 6.00 to be the top Sri Lankan bowler with Bet365 are very generous. Shashikala Siriwardene is 4.50, as is Sugandika Kumari, while recalled Udeshika Prabodhani is 4.33.
🏆 AUS Women vs SL Women Prediction
Australia are comfortable favourites for this game and they should be able to continue their dominant form against a Sri Lanka team who, in the women’s game, are still very much minnows compared to the top nations.
