Australia Team News & Playing 11

AUS Team News

Australia are set to drop opener Aaron Finch and all-rounder Mitch Marsh for the fourth and final test of the series. Finch has scored 97 runs in six innings so far, while Marsh scored 19 in his only test and went wicketless with the ball. Peter Handscomb and leg-spinner Marnus Labuschagne are the men in the frame to replace them.

AUS Key Players

In a disappointing series with the bat, Travis Head is Australia's top run scorer so far - the only batsman to hit two half-centuries in the six innings, on his way to 217 runs and an average of 36.16.

Usman Khawaja showed a flash of his best form, with a patient second-innings 72 as Australia won the second test - Marcus Harris having scored 70 in the first test - but the hosts' problem has been no batsman turning those scores into centuries, and none scoring well consistently. Khawaja has, however, scored 732 runs in his last ten tests.

With the ball there have been positives, including Pat Cummins' bowling in the third test. He claimed 3-72 in the first innings and 6-27 from 11 overs as he ripped through the top order in the second innings. Cummins - who also top-scored with 63 in the second Australia innings - has 14 wickets in the series so far. That puts him second to Nathan Lyon in the Australian list, with the spinner having claimed two five-fers and 17 wickets in total. He has 49 wickets in his last ten test matches.

AUS Team Form

Australia have not won a test series since the Ashes 12 months ago. The 4-0 win against England was followed by the controversy-ridden 3-1 defeat to South Africa, which ended with David Warner, Steve Smith and Cameron Bancroft banned for their part in the ball-tampering scandal.

Without that trio, Australia headed to the UAE to face Pakistan, and drew the first test but lost the second. That set up this series and, despite 31 wickets between Nathan Lyon and Pat Cummins so far, Australia have just the second-test win to their name. Defeats either side mean India will retain the Border-Gavaskar Trophy no matter what, having won 2-1 in the four-test series in India in 2016/17.

Australia Predicted Playing 11

Marcus Harris, Marnus Labuschagne, Usman Khawaja, Shaun Marsh, Peter Handscombe, Tim Paine, Travis Head, Pat Cummins, Nathan Lyon, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood

India Team News & Playing 11

IND Team News

Ravichandran Ashwin looked set to miss the fourth test due to injury but has been named in India's 13-man squad for the match anyway. Kuldeep Yadav is the 13, however, and could be named as the front-line spinner if Ashwin misses out as expected. Ishant Sharma is also not being risked due to a rib injury - Umesh Yadav is in the squad in his place - while KL Rahul replaces Rohit Sharma, who has flown home for family reasons. Hardik Pandya will not feature.

IND Key Players

Cheteshwar Pujara has hit two centuries in the three matches so far, both of which led to India victories. He has 328 runs so far at an average of 54.66 and has now hit 702 runs in his last nine tests.

Captain and world number one batsman Virat Kohli is the only other centurion in this series so far - hitting his 123, the 25th test century of his career, in the second test. Kohli has scored 259 runs in the series, which is actually a reduction on his recent form - 1,036 in his last ten tests at an average of 57.55. Rohit Sharma misses out due to family reasons, but Ajinkya Rahane will look to build on his two half-centuries so far.

India have plenty of depth with the ball too, with fit-again Jasprit Bumrah leading the way. He took nine wickets in the most recent test, including 6-33 in the first innings, as India claimed a 2-1 series lead. He now has 20 wickets in the three games so far and averages just 14.65.

Mohammed Shami has 14 wickets in the series, meanwhile, bowling in tandem with Bumrah and the two will ensure the absence of Ishant Sharma will not be too keenly felt.

IND Team Form

India, with injuries to key bowlers, lost 4-1 to England in the summer but are now looking for their second consecutive series win since.

Centuries for youngster Prithvi Shaw, Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja inspired a big innings win against West Indies on the back of the loss to England, getting India back to winning ways. They won the second test to claim the series 2-0 and are now 2-1 up against Australia.

Cheteshwar Pujara hit centuries in the first and third tests, both of which India have won, while Jasprit Bumrah has 20 wickets in the series. No matter what, India will now retain the Border-Gavaskar Trophy - but they would like to do so with a series win, rather than a 2-2 draw.

India Predicted Playing 11

Hanuma Vihari, Mayank Agarwal, Cheteshwar Pujara, Virat Kohli, Ajinkya Rahane, KL Rahul, Risabh Pant, Ravindra Jadeja, Mohammed Shami, Kuldeep Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah

Australia vs India Head to Head

This will be the 98th test match between Australia and India, of which 42 have been won by Australia and 28 by India. There have been 26 drawn tests and one memorable tie. More recently, however, it has been India on top. As well as leading this series 2-1 after three matches, India also won 2-1 on home soil in 2017.

Australia bowled India out for 105 and 107 in the first test in a dominant 333-run victory, but India hit back to win the second and fourth tests and have now won four of the next six matches against the Australians. Cheteshwar Pujara seems to enjoy these matches in particular - he hit a double-century during that series, and has hit 100s in each of India's two wins in Australia during the current one.

Australia vs India Betting Odds

After two wins from three so far, India are 2.10 with both Bet365 and Betfair to wrap up the series with a third victory in the final test. Australia are 2.50 by contrast.

Cheteshwar Pujara appears to relish playing Australia, and has hit centuries in each of the two wins so far on this tour, and he is 4.50 with Betway to be top Indian batsman. Virat Kohli, unsurprisingly, is favourite at 3.00.

Australia have at least had the positive of Pat Cummins' bowling, meanwhile. He is 3.75 with Betfair to be their top bowler with Betfair, but - amid suggestions the Sydney pitch will favour the spinners - Nathan Lyon might be a better bet at 3.00.

🏆 Australia vs India Prediction

India have already ensured they will retain the Border-Gavaskar Trophy with two wins from three matches so far, but they will want to ensure they return home with a series win. With Cheteshwar Pujara in particular in good form, they can win at Sydney to ensure they do exactly that, however.

Final Verdict: Back India to beat Australia at 2.10 with Bet365 and Betfair.
