ICC T20 World Cup 2020

The seventh edition of the ICC T20 World Cup is scheduled to be played in Australia from 18 October to 15 November 2020. A total of 16 teams will be competing in this marquee tournament. The top ten ranked teams in the T20 format have made a direct qualification to the tournament, and of those, the top eight teams have automatically qualified for the Super 12 stage. Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, due to their lower positions in the ICC T20I rankings as of 31st December 2018, have not qualified directly for the Super 12 stage and will first have to compete in the group stage. Papua New Guinea, Netherlands, Ireland, Namibia, Scotland and Oman are the six teams that have qualified for the Word Cup via the 2019 ICC T20 World Cup Qualifier held in the United Arab Emirates. The 2020 World T20 will comprise a total of 45 matches with the final to be hosted by the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has introduced a new format for the 2020 T20 World Cup. Initially, the group stage named as the 'First Round' will have two groups - Group A and Group B of four teams each. Group A will feature Sri Lanka, Papua New Guinea, Ireland and Oman while Group B will feature Bangladesh, Netherlands, Namibia and Scotland. The top two teams from each group will then advance to the Super 12 stage which again will have two groups - Group 1 and Group 2. The top team from Group A and second ranked team from Group B will join Pakistan, Australia, New Zealand and West Indies in Group 1 while the top team from Group B and second ranked team from Group A will join India, England, South Africa and Afghanistan in Group 2. The top two teams from each of these groups will qualify for the semi-finals.

Australia are runners-up of the 2010 edition held in the West Indies where they lost the final to England at Bridgetown. They made the semi-finals in the inaugural 2007 edition in South Africa and then five years later in 2012 in Sri Lanka. They, however, did not have a great time on the previous two occasions. Last time at the 2016 World T20 in India, the Aussies finished third in their group standings at the end of the Super 10 stage with two wins and as many losses from four matches.

After losing to India in a close final at Johannesburg in the very first World T20 in 2007, they emerged champions in the following 2009 edition held in England when they beat Sri Lanka in the final at the Lord's. They then finished as semi-finalists in 2010 and 2012. Last time, Pakistan lost three out of their four matches to end up fourth on their group's leaderboard at the end of the Super 10 stage.

India then failed to reach the semi-finals on the next three occasions before finishing runners-up in 2014 where they lost to Sri Lanka in the final at Dhaka. They had a pretty good tournament last time at home, finishing second in the Super 10 group standings with three wins from four matches. They could not make it to the semi-finals in the following two editions - in 2012 and 2014 which were hosted by Sri Lanka and Bangladesh respectively. But after back-to-back disappointing tournaments, England had a successful campaign at the 2016 T20 World Cup in India where they came runners-up after losing a thrilling final against the West Indies at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata.

Our Prediction: Who Will Win T20 World Cup 2020?

Papua New Guinea, Ireland, Oman, Netherlands, Namibia and Scotland have all qualified for the 2020 T20 World Cup via the 2019 qualifiers, but none have the potential to go beyond the Super 10 stage leave alone winning the tournament. Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, who will have to compete in the first round, will likely make it through to the Super 10 stage but we don't expect them to reach the semi-finals. Afghanistan have booked a direct ticket to the Super 10 and that would be nothing less than an achievement for the minnows. But we don't see them advancing to the knockouts. West Indies, the two-time title holders, are not as formidable as they looked last time. South Africa too are undergoing through a transition phase while Pakistan are likely to struggle with their batting in these conditions.

England, India, New Zealand along with hosts Australia are the ones who we feel will progress to the semi-finals. England, India and New Zealand are currently fourth, fifth and sixth respectively in the ICC T20I rankings and have plenty of firepower in their batting and bowling departments to take them a long way in the tournament. However, it is Australia who we feel are the strongest contenders to win the title this time around. The Aussies will have the home advantage in their favor and the return of David Warner and Steven Smith has reinforced their batting. So we are backing the home team to win their first ever T20 World Cup.

Final Verdict

Back Australia to win the ICC T20 World Cup 2020. at 4.33 with Betway, 3.75 with Bet365 and 4 with 10CRIC
