Who will win West Indies vs Ireland, 2nd T20 2020?
Hosts West Indies welcome Ireland to Basseterre as they look to level up their T20i series following a surprise opening defeat. The second game of the series takes place on January 18 at Warner Park and the live action gets underway at 18:00.
West Indies were big favourites to win the opening game, particularly after a 3-0 series whitewash in the ODI leg, but Paul Stirling hammered 95 from 47 balls, shared a 154-run opening stand with Kevin O’Brien and helped Ireland to 208/7 and a four-run win.
Even then, however, in-form Evin Lewis’ half-century had kept West Indies on track in reply and they went into the 19th over needing 16 runs to win. Craig Young and Joshua Little kept things tight to seal an Irish victory, however.

WI Team News
Dwayne Bravo made his international return last time out, but Caribbean Premier League stars Romario Shepherd and Brandon King missed out. The top-order generally did well, but Shepherd could come in for Kesrick Williams, who conceded 48 runs from his three overs with the ball.
WI Key Players
Evin Lewis: In excellent form in the ODI series, and the big-hitting opener looks to have carried that into this series too – he scored 53 from 29 balls last time out.
Dwayne Bravo: Marked his return to the team by taking 2-28 with the ball and then hitting a six in the final over to keep the tie alive. He was out off the penultimate ball, however.
Hayden Walsh Jr: Finished the ODI series in wicket-taking form and returned figures of 1-25 in the first game of this T20i series too – including 14 dot balls.
WI Team Form
Defeat would mean a fifth T20i series defeat in a row for West Indies, who most recently have lost 2-1 to both Afghanistan and India. They started this series needing 209 to win the opening game and a big 18th over took them to the brink. Ireland pulled it back, however, and West Indies finished short on 204/7.
West Indies are looking to end a run of four consecutive T20i series defeats, though they have won one game apiece in the last two – against Afghanistan and then India. Playing India last time out, they failed to defend 207/5 in the first game after Shimron Hetmyer’s half-century but Lendl Simmons’ 67* from 45 balls helped them chase 171 for an eight-wicket win to level the series. In the decider, however, the Indian batsmen dominated to claim a 67-run win.
West Indies Predicted Playing 11
Evin Lewis, Lendl Simmons, Shimron Hetmyer, Nicholas Pooran (wk), Kieron Pollard (c), Shefane Rutherford, Dwayne Bravo, Sheldon Cottrell, Hayden Walsh Jr, Romario Shepherd, Khary Pierre
Ireland Team News & Playing 11
IRE Team News
George Dockrell, Joshua Little and Harry Tector all came into the team from the side that played in the ODI series, having not been in the 50-over squad. Barry McCarthy’s expensive 18th over nearly proved costly and he could be replaced by Boyd Rankin this time out, while Mark Adair is another option.
IRE Key Players
Paul Stirling: The big-hitting opener scored 95 from 47 balls, including six fours and eight sixes, to set the tone for Ireland last time out and claim the man of the award. It was his 17th half-century in T20i cricket and left him just short of a first T20i century.
Kevin O’Brien: Played the supporting role to Stirling last time out, sharing a 154-run opening partnership in just 12.3 overs as he scored 48 from 32 balls.
Craig Young: His excellent 19th over turned the game back in Ireland’s favour, while his two wickets were key ones too – getting Evin Lewis and Nicholas Pooran as he took 2-31.
IRE Team Form
Ireland qualified for next year’s T20 World Cup in their most recent T20i outing, and they showed they could make a mark at that tournament by opening this series with a win. Paul Stirling (95) and Kevin O’Brien (48) shared an Irish-record 154-run opening partnership last time out in a total of 208/7, which late bowling heroics from Joshua Little (3-29) and Craig Young (2-31) ensured was a winning total.
Ireland Predicted Playing 11
Paul Stirling, Kevin O’Brien, Andrew Balbirnie (c), Gareth Delany, Harry Tector, Gary Wilson (wk), Simi Singh, George Dockrell, Joshua Little, Craig Young, Boyd Rankin
West Indies vs Ireland Head to Head
Ireland won their first game of the series last time they toured the Caribbean too, back in 2014. On that occasion it was a low-scoring win but this time it was a high-scoring game at St George’s – 208/7 beating 204/7 as Paul Stirling’s 95 earned him the man-of-the-match award.
