India are favorites to win
West Indies’ hopes of a top-four spot at the 2019 Cricket World Cup will be over if they lose to unbeaten India in their latest match at Old Trafford, Manchester. The match is scheduled for June 27 and the live action begins at 10:30 local time.

Old Trafford has favoured teams batting first and, after beating Pakistan by batting first in Manchester last time out, India could choose to do the same again.
Though very humid, Manchester should stay dry for the match on Thursday.
The Old Trafford wicket has been used a few times now and, combined, with the humidity, the pitch may be better suited to taking the pace off the ball.

West Indies will be without star all-rounder Andre Russell, who has finally succumbed to the injuries which have been dogging him throughout the tournament. Evin Lewis also injured his hamstring in the defeat to New Zealand. Russell’s replacement Sunil Ambris could be drafted into the starting line-up if Lewis fails to recover in time. In that case, the Windies will probably open the batting with Chris Gayle and Shai Hope.
Carlos Brathwaite so nearly guided West Indies to an improbable win against New Zealand last time out, reminding everybody of the danger he can pose with the bat when he smashed 101 from 82 balls to follow up his two wickets.
With Andre Russell ruled out, Brathwaite’s all-round ability could be key in the middle-order.
At the top of the order, meanwhile, Chris Gayle recaptured some of his best form to score 87 to move to 194 runs from five innings. That is seven more than Shai Hope, who arrived at the World Cup in supreme form.
Shimron Hetmyer also scored his second half-century last time out and now has 171 runs in total. Like Gayle, Hope and Nicholas Pooran, West Indies need their rising star to start delivering more consistently.
The same rings true of the bowlers, with Sheldon Cottrell’s four wickets last time out taking him to nine for the tournament. He and Oshane Thomas, alongside captain Jason Holder, have delivered some hostile fast-bowling spells but they have also been expensive at times.
West Indies started the tournament in fine form with a dominant win against Pakistan but they have not backed it up, losing all four completed matches since. They went close against both Australia and New Zealand – losing by 15 runs and five runs respectively – but in between suffered an eight-wicket loss to England and a seven-wicket defeat to Bangladesh.

After replacing injured Bhuvneshwar Kumar against Afghanistan and claiming four wickets – including a hat-trick – bowler Mohammed Shami has made it hard to drop him. India could therefore be unchanged, with KL Rahul continuing at the top of the order alongside Rohit Sharma, after Shikhar Dhawan was ruled out of the tournament.
Virat Kohli remains the world’s leading ODI batsman and has shown why with three consecutive half-centuries in his last three innings. He hit 82 in the win against Australia, 77 against Pakistan and 67 against Afghanistan.
Rohit Sharma is second in those rankings and has already hit two centuries at this Cricket World Cup – 122* against South Africa and then 140 in the win against fierce rivals Pakistan.
India also boast the world number one bowler, and Jasprit Bumrah has now taken seven wickets in this tournament after his 2-39 against Afghanistan. Yuzvendra Chahal has eight from four games, while Mohammed Shami announced himself with 4-40 against Afghanistan, including finishing the match with a hat-trick.
India have won all four of their completed matches so far, most recently seeing off fierce rivals Pakistan with a dominant performance at Old Trafford before a narrow win against Afghanistan.
In the former, Rohit Sharm led the way with 140 out of a total of 336/5, in an eventual 89-run win on the DLS method. Next up, India were restricted to 224/8 but Mohammed Shami claimed four wickets – finishing the innings with a hat-trick – as India held on to win by 11 runs.

While West Indies’ historic success means they still have the slightly better head-to-head record in this fixture, India closed the gap again when they last met – winning 3-1 at home. The five-game series included the second tied ODI between the two – Virat Kohli’s 157* helping India to 321/6 before West Indies scored 321/7, led by Shai Hope’s unbeaten 123.
West Indies won the third game to level the series – their 62nd ODI win against India – as both Hope and Kohli shone with the bat again – but India dominated the last two games. Rohit Sharma (162) helped them to 377/5 and a 224-run win in Mumbai in the fourth game, before they bowled West Indies out for 104 in the final match – Sharma’s 63* leading them to a nine-wicket win. It was India’s 59th ODI win against West Indies.

With India fully living up to expectations so far at this tournament, they are big favourites to beat West Indies at Old Trafford.
India’s opening partnership to score 50+ runs is 2.30 with Betway’s #betyourway, with KL Rahul and in-form Rohit Sharma likely to be the pairing at the top of the order.
When these teams last met, at the end of last year, Virat Kohli and Shai Hope were among the star batsman. You can get 4.50 on both men to hit 50+ runs.
Kohli and Hope to both be their team’s star batsman is 9.50, while Jasprit Bumrah and Sheldon Cottrell to both be their team’s top bowler is 12.00.
Alternatively, Chris Gayle to be West Indies’ top batsman, Rohit Sharma to be India’s top batsman and India to win the match will return 17.00.
Given the two teams’ respective form, it may be beneficial to lean heavily towards India with your Dream 11 selection, but there are still players like Shai Hope and Sheldon Cottrell who merit selection. India’s stars come at a high price, so it is a difficult balancing act when it comes to overall cost.
Wicket-keeper
Shai Hope is one of West Indies’ stand-out batsman, as proved to be the case when they last met India too. MS Dhoni has not been called upon much by contrast and so the West Indian is worth picking. Nicholas Pooran is also classed as a wicket-keeper, if you want to save some credits.
Batsmen
Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma simply have to be selected, regardless of price, and KL Rahul’s promotion up the order makes him worth picking up at 8.5 credits too. Chris Gayle showed some of his best form last time out, and a repeat of that would make him worth selecting too, but he is inconsistent and a big gamble at 9.5 credits. If you want to afford Kohli and Sharma, a cheaper West Indian batsman like new call-up Sunil Ambris could be better value.
All-rounders
While he is inconsistent, Hardik Pandya could be a dark horse to shine as an all-rounder in this match. He is worth nine credits, as is Jason Holder, however. Carlos Brathwaite is 8.5 after his century and two wickets last time out and is therefore better value.
Bowlers
As with the batsman, India’s number one bowler simply must be picked, regardless of cost. Jasprit Bumrah is 9.5 credits and Yuzvendra Chahal is nine, but Mohammed Shami is worth selecting at 8.5 credits. That leaves enough for Sheldon Cottrell and Oshane Thomas from the West Indian pace attack.
Captain/Vice-captain
Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma have been run machines both at this World Cup and in previous matches against West Indies. Both could play a key part in this fixture and both merit being picked as captain or vice-captain, in either order.
BATSMEN | ALL ROUNDER | WICKET KEEPER | BOWLER |
---|---|---|---|
Virat Kohli (c) | Carlos Brathwaite | Shai Hope | Jasprit Bumrah |
Rohit Sharma (vc) | Jonny Bairstow | Sheldon Cottrell | |
KL Rahul | Yuzvendra Chahal | ||
Sunil Ambris | Oshane Thomas | ||
Mohammed Shami |
India are in top form and West Indies simply are not. With Andre Russell missing too, India can take full advantage and claim another victory.
