West Indies Team News & Playing 11

WI Team News

Shannon Gabriel has been suspended for the first four matches of the ODI series after homophobic comments he made towards Joe Root during the third test. He had only been added to the squad after injuries to Rovman Powell and Keemo Paul. Chris Gayle is set to make his ODI return for the West Indies ahead of the World Cup, and could open the batting with Evin Lewis. Nicholas Pooran is also in line for his ODI debut after impressing in T20 cricket, both internationally and domestically.

WI Key Players

Shai Hope was in red-hot batting form in West Indies’ recent ODI series with Bangladesh, scoring 43, 146* and 108* in his three innings. He averages 47.48 in ODI cricket and has scored four 100s and seven 50s in 41 innings.

West Indies also welcome back their two explosive openers, whose form could be key to how they perform at the World Cup in the summer. Chris Gayle’s big-hitting ability at the top of the order is well known, even if he failed to ignite the BPL – his most recent tournament – to the extent he might have liked. Evin Lewis had no such issues, however – overcoming a hamstring injury to help Comilla Victorians to victory.

Nicholas Pooran is also an exciting addition to the side given his T20 (and T10) form across the globe. He was one of the stand-out players in the BPL, scoring 379 runs in 11 innings with a strike rate of 159.91 and it will be interesting to see how his form translates in the 50-over game.

Jason Holder’s return is also a boost, with bat and ball. His most recent ODI series was against India, where he took two wickets and made a couple of useful knocks with the bat too. He has 112 wickets in 84 ODI innings and averages 26.84 with the bat.

Kemar Roach will be hoping to carry his test-match bowling form into the ODI series, meanwhile. He took 5/17 at Bridgetown to rip through the English batting line-up in the first test, and finished with 18 wickets in total in the three-match series.

WI Team Form

West Indies have not won an ODI series or tournament of any kind since beating Bangladesh at home in 2014. They have lost 12 of the 13 bilateral series they have played since then, as well as failing to win two tri-nation series and losing to Afghanistan in the final of the ICC World Cup Qualifier too – though they did at least qualify in second place from that competition.

Since then, they have lost 2-1 at home and by the same score away to Bangladesh, either side of a 3-1 series defeat in India. Their most recent series was in Bangladesh, where they were restricted to 195/9 in the first match and fell to a five-wicket defeat. Shai Hope led the revival, smashing an unbeaten 146 from 144 balls as West Indies chased 256 to win the second game by four wickets with two balls remaining. Another unbeaten Hope century was not enough in thedecider, however – West Indies scored 198/9 and Bangladesh cruised home to win by eight wickets with 11.3 overs remaining.

England Team News & Playing 11

ENG Team News

England have their ODI big guns back for the second leg of this tour of West Indies, with captain Eoin Morgan joining Tom Curran, Alex Hales, Liam Plunkett, Jason Roy and David Willey in linking up with the squad.

The big selection decisions for England will be which two of Hales, Roy and Jonny Bairstow will open the batting and which of Plunket, Willey and Mark Wood will replace injured Olly Stone in the bowling attack from the team which beat Sri Lanka. Hales and Willey both withdrew early from recent T20 commitments (the BPL and BBL respectively) due to injuries, so their condition may dictate England’s decision.

ENG Key Players

England’s ODI side have been in blistering form, led by captain Eoin Morgan – who scored two half-centuries and 195 runs in total during their rain-affected ODI series win against Sri Lanka last time out.

Morgan and Root have been in particularly good ODI batting form – Root hitting two centuries to lead the comeback against India too, while Morgan hit two half-centuries in that three-game series.

The two will likely bat at number three and four, with Jonny Bairstow, Jason Roy and Alex Hales vying for the two opening spots. All three have enjoyed some superb innings in the past 18 months – Bairstow hitting three back-to-back centuries last year, Hales leading England to their record-breaking 481/6 against Australia in the summer and Roy hitting two centuries and one 50 in that tournament.Any team who manages to get through that top order unscathed then has to face Jos Buttler, who was also in top form against Australia, and the all-rounders like in-form Tom Curran.

Curran, one of the leading all-rounders in this year’s Big Bash League with 185 runs and 20 wickets, took six wickets in three matches in Sri Lanka in England’s most recent ODI series. Adil Rashid also took six in that series, to go with the six he pouched against India and 12 he took against Australia.

ENG Team Form

Excluding their one-off game with Scotland last summer, in which they suffered a shock defeat, England have won their last nine bilateral ODI series. Since Scotland’s shock win, meanwhile, they have won ten of their 12 completed matches too.

That started with a 5-0 whitewash of Australia at home – the batsmen leading the way in style as Jason Roy hit two centuries, while Alex Hales and Jonny Bairstow both reached 100 in the record-breaking 481/6 at Trent Bridge.

India were next up and took a 1-0 lead in the three-match series, but Joe Root led the comeback with two unbeaten centuries as England turned it around to win 2-1. Root and Eoin Morgan shared an unbeaten 186-run partnership as England won the decider by eight wickets.

Most recently, they played a rain-affected series in Sri Lanka. The first game ended in no result while each of the following four matches were cut short by the weather, but England won three in a row – Morgan hitting 92, 58* and 31* in those games – to claim a series win. They did lose their most recent match, however, after conceding 366/6 to the Sri Lankas before collapsing to 132/9 in reply to lose by 219 runs under the DLS method.

West Indies vs England Head to Head

If England win in Bridgetown, it will be their 50th ODI win against West Indies in their 97th 50-over game against them. West Indies have won 42, while a further five have been curtailed before a result.

England won 4-0 in their most recent series, in England, while they won all three matches when they were last in the West Indies too. Jonny Bairstow twice hit centuries when these two teams last met, scoring 302 runs in the series to lead England to victory. Joe Root and Jason Roy both passed 50 twice, meanwhile – Roy hitting scores of 96 and 84 in his two appearances. Evin Lewis did smash 176 from 130 balls in the fourth game, at the Oval, while Alzarri Joseph claimed all five England wickets to fall. A 77-run unbeaten partnership between Jos Buttler and Moeen Ali led England to a five-wicket win in reply – the rain curtailing their innings with them five runs ahead of the DLS par on 258/5. The final game of the series – the most recent match between the two – saw Bairstow (141*) and Roy (96) share 156 for the first wicket in reply to West Indies’ 288/6, before Root (46*) and Bairstow added an unbeaten 138 for the second to lead England to 294/1 and a nine-wicket win.

West Indies vs England Betting Odds

Given the vast difference in their recent ODI form, it is no surprise to find England big favourites for the first ODI of this series. They are 1.40 to win with Bet365 and 1.36 with Betway. Bet365 are offering as high as 3.00 on West Indies to win.

West Indies might have Gayle and Lewis back, with in-form Shai Hope another option to open the batting, but England’s batting has been their biggest strength. Jason Roy and Jonny Bairstow shared a huge opening partnership when these teams last met and you can get 1.80 from Bet365 on England posting the highest opening partnership again.

Bairstow and Roy were both in the runs in that series but Joe Root and Eoin Morgan have excelled of late too. Root is 4.00 with Bet365 to be England’s top batsman, while Morgan is 5.50.

England’s bowling attack could feature in-form Tom Curran, fresh from his BBL exploits, and he is 5.50 to be their top bowler. Adil Rashid has led the way with the ball in their recent successes, however – the Yorkshire leggie is 4.33 with Bet365 to be their top bowler.

🏆 West Indies vs England Prediction

England may have suffered a shock defeat in the test series but they are currently the world number one team in ODI cricket and they should be beating West Indies.
