South Africa are favourites to win
After a heavy dose of T20 cricket, it's now time to move on to the 50-overs format. The tri-series in the Caribbean will feature West Indies and two of the world's strongest cricket teams - South Africa and Australia. The first of the 10-match ODI series will see the hosts go up against South Africa on June 3 at the Providence Stadium in Guyana. Both the teams have been playing T20Is since February this year and will have to re-adjust quickly for the one-day mode. The match is scheduled to begin at 1 PM local time.

West Indies and South Africa will be playing an ODI match against each other at this venue for the first time. The first-innings score in the last five ODIs here have been 232, 224, 139, 206 and 254. Anything around 230 has almost always proved to be sufficient for a victory. So 250 or more on this ground should be a decent first-innings total.
There have been a total of 13 ODIs at the Providence Stadium, of which 9 have been won by the team batting first. Also, the ball seems to do a little more under lights which makes toss an important factor for this game. So the toss-winning team will probably want to bat first here and put up a challenging total on the board.
South Africa boast a formidable batting lineup and it will become difficult for the West Indies to beat them if the Proteas win the toss on Friday, otherwise it should be an interesting contest.
Predicted score: 250
They will be without some big names such as Chris Gayle, Dwayne Bravo, Darren Sammy and Andre Russell. Johnson Charles and Andre Fletcher could open the batting. Both like to play attacking cricket and the Windies will be backing them for a flying start. Darren Bravo and Marlon Samuels in the middle-order will look to hold the innings together while Jonathan Carter and Denesh Ramdin are fine finishers. If the top four bat well, West Indies could be looking at a score beyond 250.
South Africa might open their bowling with Kyle Abbott and Kagiso Rabada. The two have bowled well in the past and will be looking to make early inroads into the West Indian batting lineup. Wayne Parnell with 65 wickets in 46 ODIs will be a bowler to watch out for. Imran Tahir is another major threat with his deceptive legbreaks. If the Proteas send their top four back with not too many on the scoreboard, West Indies will struggle big time to reach 250.
Predicted score: 270
Quinton de Kock and Hashim Amla are likely to start the South African innings. Amla had a good stint in the IPL and he recently warmed-up with 92 in Sunday's practice match. Skipper AB de Villiers at No. 3 is the batsman South Africa will have their hopes pinned on. He will be coming after a fantastic IPL season and will be the best bet to top-score for his side. The middle-order looks stable with Faf du Plessis and JP Duminy. Hard-hitter Chris Morris down the order will look to finish the innings off with a cameo. If Amla and De Villiers get going, South Africa should get to 270.
Jerome Taylor and skipper Jason Holder could open the bowling for West Indies. The two will look to pitch the ball in the right areas to de Kock who tends to be a little uncertain with his footwork at the start of the innings. Off-spinner Ashley Nurse impressed with his 3-wicket haul in one of the practice matches and he could make his ODI debut on Friday. Spinners Sunil Narine and Sulieman Benn are the two bowlers the Proteas will be cautious against. If the West Indian bowlers don't allow Amla, de Villiers and de Kock to bat for long, they will have a good chance of restricting South Africa below 270.
West Indies have played 8 ODIs before on this ground and they had won their last match here against Pakistan by 37 runs. So as far as knowledge of the conditions goes, they will have a definite edge over South Africa who will be playing their first ODI here. But their team is devoid of the big players due to some issues with the West Indies cricket board which has left the side rather depleted. South Africa, on the other hand, will be going into the match with full strength. Also, in their last tour of the Caribbean back in 2010, they had demolished the Windies in the ODI series with a 5-0 whitewash.
Although West Indies feature plenty of allrounders in their side and will have the advantage of playing in home conditions, we predict South Africa to emerge victorious in the opening match of this tri-series.
