New Zealand Women are favourites to win
West Indies Women will take on New Zealand Women in the first WT20I at The Sir Vivian Richards Stadium. The first game of the series begins at 13:30 local time on Wednesday 28th September.
This will be West Indies Women’s first series in this format since September 2021 after they drew 1-1 against South Africa Women with all games played at North Sound, Antigua. Anisa Mohammed captained the team in that series but it will be Hayley Matthews who leads the team here.
Deandra Dottin and Kyshona Knight top scored and contributed a second wicket partnership of 53 in West Indies’ last WT20I. Dottin has now retired from international cricket but Knight will be one of the key batters for the home side in this game and the series.
Captain Hayley Matthews went wicketless in the second WODI but took five wickets in Antigua across the other two games. She bowled a maiden and took 2-23 in the final game of the series with top scorer Lauren Down one of her wickets.
West Indies Women have lost only one of their last six WT20Is but their team has changed over the last 12 months with the retirement of Deandra Dottin and the new captain appointed.
The visitors come into this game off the back of winning the WODI series 2-1 earlier this month. That series win came after New Zealand Women went all the way to the semi-final of the Commonwealth Games and won the 3rd Place Play-Off.
We expect to see the same opening pair of skipper Sophie Devine and all-rounder Suzie Bates for New Zealand Women in this series. 21 year old all-rounder, Amelia Kerr, was the leading run scorer across both teams in the WODI series and averaged 49.00.
Right arm medium pacer Jess Kerr was New Zealand Women’s top wicket taker during the WODIs and we expect her to be a threat in this game. Alongside her, Hayley Jensen took seven wickets during the Commonwealth Games and she has 36 dismissals in this format.
Although they beat England Women in the 3rd Place Play-Off, New Zealand Women lost their previous two WT20Is in the Commonwealth Games.
This game will be played at The Sir Vivian Richards Stadium, North Sound, Antigua. The bowlers were on top at this venue throughout the WODI series and we expect spinners alongside pace bowlers to enjoy this surface.

Rashada Williams, Natasha McLean (wk), Shabika Gajnabi, Stafanie Taylor, Hayley Matthews (c), Kyshona Knight, Afy Fletcher, Chinelle Henry, Karishma Ramharack, Shakera Selman, Aaliyah Alleyne
Suzie Bates, Sophie Devine (c), Amelia Kerr, Maddy Green, Lauren Down, Brooke Halliday, Georgia Plimmer, Isabella Gaze (wk), Jess Kerr, Molly Penfold, Fran Jonas
Wickets fell at regular intervals throughout the WODI series and it would be a big shock if the bowlers were not on top during this game also. We expect West Indies Women to push New Zealand Women during this match but are backing New Zealand Women to win.
