Wellington Blaze are favorites to win
Wellington Blaze will take on Canterbury Magicians at the Cello Basin Reserve. Match 23 of the 2022-23 Women’s Super Smash gets underway at 11:00 local time on Monday 23rd January.
It has been the perfect season for Wellington Blaze so far with seven wins from seven games and currently an eight point lead over Canterbury Magicians. Their last victory, over Auckland Aces on Thursday, was by 26 runs in Match 19 of the tournament.
Coming into this game in strong form with the bat is opener Rebecca Burns who hit 53 runs from 40 balls on Thursday. She hit eight four and one six and outscored her skipper, Amelia Kerr, who had been Blaze’s most consistent batter so far in the tournament.
With the ball, defending a target of 132, the accuracy of the bowlers and the enthusiasm in the field from Wellington Blaze was impressive and we expect to see the same in this match against the Magicians. Nicole Baird and Caitlin King both took 2-11 from their three overs.
Wellington Blaze have won every game this season with their lower winning margin 11 runs in Match 9.
In any other Women’s Super Smash season, Canterbury Magicians’ returns of five wins from six games would be enough to see them at the top of the table. However, they came the closest of any team to defeat Wellington Blaze when they met on New Year’s Day.
Kate Anderson (35 runs from 42 balls) and skipper Amy Satterthwaite (34 not out from 32 balls) were the chief run scorers in the win over Northern Brave Women in their last game. Satterthwaite went down the order to give other players an opportunity but was still required for the Magicians and won the game from number five.
Leg-spinner Sarah Asmussen has had an excellent campaign so far and has proved capable of causing batters problems on any pitch. She took 2-31 the last time the Magicians faced off against Blaze and took 3-16 in last Friday’s victory over Northern Brave Women.
Canterbury Magicians have won two games in a row since losing to Wellington Blaze.
The match will be played at the Cello Basin Reserve. This is one of the better batting pitches in the tournament and a total of 150 is not out of the question.
