Wellington Blaze are favorites to win
Wellington Blaze will take on Canterbury Magicians at Hagley Oval, Christchurch. The Final of the 2022-23 Women’s Super Smash gets underway at 14:30 local time on Saturday February 11th.
After winning eight of their 10 fixtures in the group stage and losing only one match, Wellington Blaze finished eight points clear of Otago Sparks in second place and 10 points ahead of Canterbury Magicians. Blaze won both of their group stage games against the Magicians by 11 runs and 114 runs.
Opener Rebecca Burns has been Wellington Blaze’s highest run scorer in the tournament and struck 35 runs from 36 balls at the top of the order in their surprise defeat to Auckland Hearts in Match 29. Amelia Kerr has hit over 240 runs across the competition but is now in South Africa for the Women’s T20 World Cup.
30 year old off-spinner Leigh Kasperek has a strike-rate of 12.4, the best of any bowler in the tournament and she took 3-22 against Auckland Hearts in the last match. Nicole Baird will also be a threat on this surface after picking up 10 wickets in this Women’s Super Smash edition.
After an abandonment and a defeat from their last two group stage games, Wellington Blaze are looking for their first win in three matches.
The Magicians qualified for Saturday’s final with a seven wicket win, with three balls remaining, against Otago Sparks in Dunedin on Thursday. The win ended a poor run of form which had seen the Magicians slip down the table across the final games.
It was no surprise to see Amy Satterthwaite top score for Canterbury Magicians in the Elimination Final but it was keeper-batter opener Laura Hughes who also caught the eye with 28 runs from 17 balls. Kate Anderson got a golden duck but is the leading run scorer in the tournament.
Sarah Asmussen took 5-17 in the Elimination Final but did not take a wicket against Wellington Blaze in the last meeting. Gabby Sullivan has taken wickets in the last five matches with a combined 4-37 from her last two games against Otago Sparks.
Canterbury Magicians have lost four of their last eight matches but had lost two in a row before the Elimination Final.
The match will be played at Hagley Oval, Christchurch. Only 15 wickets have fallen on this pitch across the last two games but it is not the easiest to bat on. We expect a par score of 140-145.
