Thailand Women are favorites to win
Thailand Women will take on Netherlands Women at the Prem Tinsulanonda International School, Chiang Mai. The opening WODI of the series will get underway at 10:00 local time on Sunday 20th November.
This WODI will be the first played by Thailand Women since they were granted ODI status back in May earlier this year. They have been making excellent progress in WT20I cricket over recent years and beat Pakistan Women for the first time last month during the 2022 Women’s Asia Cup.
Natthakan Chantham was the star for Thailand Women in their win over Pakistan Women during early October. The opener scored 61 runs from 51 balls and took the Player of the Match Award against strong opposition. She has scored six international half-centuries.
Slow left-arm orthodox bowler Thipatcha Putthawong was Thailand Women’s top bowler during the 2022 Women’s Asia Cup with nine wickets from seven games. Although she is only 18 years of age, she already has a reputation for accurate bowling and will be a threat on this pitch.
Although they have been a strong WT20I side for a few years, this will be Thailand Women’s first WODI.
After gaining ODI status themselves in May 2022, Netherlands Women celebrated with a three game home WODI series at home to Ireland Women. However, they were well beaten in each match - the margins of defeat five wickets, 210 runs and eight wickets.
Across the three game series against Ireland Women, only one Netherlands Women player was able to hit a half-century. Keeper-batter Babette de Leede did it in the opening match and Frederique Overdijk also looked comfortable. Netherlands Women will require runs from the pair if they are to be competitive in this game.
21 year old medium pacer Iris Zwilling caught the eye for Netherlands Women in this format during the summer and took 2-20 in the opening game of the series against Ireland Women. Leg-spinner Silver Siegers should be able to get some significant turn on this surface.
Netherlands Women are still searching for their first win in this format.
The match will be played at the Prem Tinsulanonda International School, Chiang Mai. We expect the pitch to be slow but with consistent bounce. A par score will be around 140 in this opening game.

Naruemol Chaiwai (C), Chanida Sutthiruang, Nannapat Koncharoenkai (WK), Natthakan Chantham, Sornnarin Tippoch, Phannita Maya, Rosenan Kanoh, Nattaya Boochatham, Onnicha Kamchomphu, Thipatcha Putthawong, Nanthita Boonsukham
Babette de Leede (C & WK), Annemijn van Beuge, Juliet Post, Sterre Kalis, Heather Siegers, Robine Rijke, Iris Zwilling, Frederique Overdijk, Caroline de Lange, Eva Lynch, Silver Sieger.
Although this is a new format for both teams, we expect Thailand Women to be able to transfer many of their skills from WT20I games. Thailand Women have impressed over the last few years and look to be a few levels above Netherlands Women. Judging by their series against Ireland Women, Netherlands Women’s batting is not strong enough at the moment. As a result, we are backing Thailand Women to win this opening WODI.
