SYS vs SYT Betting Tips

  • Sydney Sixers have won seven of their 12 matches so far and a win in this Sydney derby will seal a semi-final place.
  • Sydney Thunder are just outside the play-off places with five wins and six defeats - they were unfortunate to have a further no result too, after a power failure when they were on course to beat Brisbane Heat.
  • Sydney Sixers have the better record in this fixture but it was the Thunder - despite Tom Curran's excellent all-round performance - who won last time they met, on Christmas Eve.

Sydney Sixers Team News & Playing 11

SYS Team News

Jack Edwards replaced Lloyd Pope last time out, after Ben Manenti had, in turn, replaced him last time out. The three appear to be competing for two places with the other eight players unchanged during the recent three-match winning streak.

SYS Key Players

Tom Curran was Sydney Sixers’ star man in the previous Sydney derby and his all-round contributions have been a key part of their success this season. He has 16 wickets from 12 appearances and has scored 175 runs at an average of 35 – his high score of 62 coming in that match on Christmas Eve.

Two Sixers bowlers have more wickets, however, with Sean Abbott taking 2-25 last time out to move to six wickets in his last three games and 18 in total for the season. Steve O’Keefe is one behind on 17, with a good economy rate of less than seven runs per over too.

Daniel Hughes scored an unbeaten 51 at the top of the order in the win against Adelaide Strikers last time out, meanwhile. He now has 294 runs in 12 innings, including three half-centuries.

Jordan Silk has not batted since scoring 41 from 26 balls against Brisbane Heat, meanwhile, and he remains on 260 runs from ten innings – four ahead of Moises Henriques, who hit 61 not out from 31 balls last time out.

James Vince’s arrival in place of Joe Denly was a positive one too. He scored 75 in the win against Brisbane Heat and an unbeaten 74 against Hobart Hurricanes.

SYS Team  Form

Sydney Sixers, having lost two in a row beforehand, have now won their last three matches. Their last defeat sae them post just 115/9 against Melbourne Renegades, despite 44 from 30 balls for Tom Curran, in a seven-wicket defeat.

Since then, the batting has vastly improved. James Vince led the way with 75 against Brisbane Heat, in a total of 177/7, and Tom Curran then took 3-16 and Sean Abbott 3-18 as they bowled the Heat out for 98.

Next up, replying to Hobart Hurricanes’ 172/4, Josh Phillippe’s unbeaten 86 – the Sixers’ highest individual BBL score – and Vince (74*) saw them put on an unbeaten 167 for the second-wicket to set a new BBL record and earn a nine-wicket win.Last time out, meanwhile, Ben Dwarshuis took 3-7 from his four overs as Adelaide Strikers posted 124/8 from their 20 overs. The Sixers, thanks to unbeaten half-centuries from Daniel Hughes and Moises Henriques, needed just 14.1 overs to seal an eight-wicket win.

Sydney Sixers Predicted Playing 11

Daniel Hughes, Josh Philippe, James Vince, Moises Henriques, Jordan Silk, Jack Edwards, Tom Curran, Sean Abbott, Steve O’Keefe, Ben Dwarshuis, Ben Manenti

Sydney Thunder Team News & Playing 11

SYT Team News

Matthew Gilkes and Nathan McAndrew were brought in for the win against Perth Scorchers but both missed out against Melbourne Renegades as the Thunder lost last time out. Jonathan Cook was brought into the bowling attack, while Baxter Holt followed teenager Gilkes in making his debut behind the stumps. Gilkes suffered a hip injury in training, joining fellow keeper Jay Lenton (fractured finger) out of the side, but it is not expected to be a long-term injury and he may return for the Sydney Smash.

SYT Key Players

Callum Ferguson has hit top form with the bat of late, hitting a half-century against Melbourne Renegades before smashing an unbeaten 113 from 53 balls against Perth Scorchers. He added 28 more runs last time out, and now has 369 runs in this year’s tournament.

The Thunder will hope to have teenager Matthew Gilkes available again, meanwhile, after his 38-ball 51 on debut, which included a 120-run partnership with Ferguson.

Ferguson is their leading run-scorer, and third-highest in the tournament this season, but Shane Watson – a centurion against Brisbane Heat – has also passed 300 runs as both men have looked to combat the loss of Jos Buttler after his departure for England duty.

Daniel Sams has a good record with the ball in the Sydney Smash, meanwhile, and he has 15 wickets so far this season from 11 innings. Fawad  Ahmed is two behind on 13, while also boasting a good economy rate of 6.92 runs per over.

SYT Team Form

Sydney Thunder have lost home and away to Melbourne Renegades to put their play-off hopes in jeopardy, either side of a big win against Perth Scorchers. In the first game against the Renegades, both Callum Ferguson and Jason Sangha scored half-centuries but they could not keep up with the run rate – finishing on 140/5 in reply to 152/9.

They looked to have sussed it in the next game, against the Scorchers, when Callum Ferguson smashed an unbeaten 113 and shared a 120-run partnership with teenage debutant Matthew Gilkes (51) in a six-wicket win chasing 182.

But a batting collapse against the Renegades last time out leaves the Thunder with five wins from 12 games – one point outside of the top four. Debutant Baxter Holt scored 37 last time out, but – chasing 141 to beat the Renegades – the Thunder were all out for just 113.

Sydney Thunder Predicted Playing 11

Shane Watson, Matthew Gilkes, Callum Ferguson, Anton Devcich, Jason Sangha, Daniel Sams, Chris Jordan, Chris Green, Nathan McAndrew, Gurinder Sandhu, Fawad Ahmed

Sydney Sixers vs Sydney Thunder Head to Head

This will be the 15th Sydney derby in the Big Bash League, with the Sixers having won nine of the previous 14. It was the Thunder who won on Christmas Eve this year, however, in a game dominated by two Englishmen.

Jos Buttler scored 63 from 37 balls as the Thunder posted 169/9, despite Tom Curran taking 3-24 with the ball. Curran then scored 62 from 40 balls but the Sixers finished on 148/9. Daniel Sams took 3-30 with the ball, having previously taken 4-14 when the two teams met at the Sydney Showground last season.

Sydney Sixers vs Sydney Thunder Betting Odds

Sydney Sixers can seal a semi-final place with a win and they are favourites to do that, at 1.66 with Bet365, 1.67 with Betway and 1.73 with Betfair. The Thunder are a best price of 2.20 to win with Bet365.

The Sixers are in good form, with all of their top four firing at various points in their recent winning run, and James Vince is 4.33 to be the top batsman with Bet365. Daniel Hughes, their top run scorer, is 4.00 with Betfair, while Moises Henriques – who top-scored last time out – is 5.50 with both.

Tom Curran starred with the ball when these teams last met, meanwhile, and he is 4.00 to be the Sixers’ top bowler with Bet365.

For Sydney Thunder, there is little question Callum Ferguson is their in-form batsman and he is 3.60 to top score for them.

🏆 Sydney Sixers vs Sydney Thunder Prediction

Sydney Sixers have a good record in the Sydney Smash and, after their defeat on Christmas Eve, will be doubly keen to win this match and seal a semi-final place.
