Sydney Sixers vs Melbourne Stars Final Match Prediction, BBL 2020

After finishing first and second in the BBL table, Sydney Sixers and Melbourne Stars will meet one more time in the 2019-20 Big Bash League Final. The match takes place at the SCG on February 8 and the live action starts at 19:15 local time.

The Sixers finished second in the table but have won their last four matches in a row, including bowling Melbourne Stars out for 99 when they met in The Qualifier play-off. Steve Smith, Nathan Lyon and Josh Hazlewood are all in the Sixers’ ranks, though all-rounder Tom Curran departed for international duty before the play-offs.

Melbourne Stars, meanwhile, were the top team in the league phase but lost their momentum as they endured a losing streak which continued with that crushing loss to the Sixers. They bounced back in the Challenger, however – this year’s top runscorer Marcus Stoinis rediscovering his midas touch in a 28-run win.

Toss Prediction

Melbourne Stars won the toss in the Qualifier and fielded first. Sydney Sixers may want to bat first at the SCG too.

Weather Report

Sydney’s win in the Qualifier may actually be bad news for this match – unlike in Melbourne, rain is forecast all day in Sydney. If it is a washout – and 50mm of rain is expected to fall – the Sixers will be crowned champions because they won the Qualifier.

Pitch Condition

The MCG has generally been well-balanced – the batsmen thrived when these teams last met but there has been something in the wicket for the bowlers too.

Sydney Sixers Team News & Playing 11

SYS Team News

Mitchell Starc has ruled out a one-off appearance for the Sixers, while David Warner will not end his BBL absence either. Nevertheless, the Sixers boast a strong squad with Steve Smith, Nathan Lyon and Josh Hazlewood all confirmed as available. It could be the same team that beat the Stars in the Qualifier, with Sean Abbott also back from injury.

SYS Key Players

Josh Philippe: Returned to top form in good time, scoring back-to-back half-centuries at the end of the group stage and top-scoring with 34 at the top of the order last time out.

Steve Smith: Part of the Sixers’ BBL-winning team in 2012, he hit 66* in the final league phase game and 24 from 18 balls when these teams met in the Qualifier.

Sean Abbott: Returned from injury for the Qualifier, taking 3-23 in the Sixers’ win. He now has 14 wickets in six matches this season.

SYS Team Form

Sydney Sixers go into this match on the back of a four-game winning streak, beating Melbourne Stars, Brisbane Heat and Melbourne Renegades in their final three round-robin matches and then the Stars again in the Qualifier.

Josh Philippe finished the league phase with back-to-back half-centuries and top-scored with 34 last time out as the Sixers posted 142/7. In reply, Sean Abbott took 3-23 as the Sixers bowled the Stars out for just 99 in 18 overs.

Melbourne Stars Team News & Playing 11

MLS Team News

With Hilton Cartwright (fractured hand) unavailable, Melbourne Stars kept faith with the team beaten by the Sixers, and were rewarded with victory against Sydney Thunder. It could therefore be the same 11 again.

MLS Key Players

Marcus Stoinis: Back in form last time out as he smashed 83 from 54 balls at the top of the order. He has now hit six half-centuries and one unbeaten 147 when these met in the league phase on his way to 695 runs in total.

Haris Rauf: The find of the season, his form earned a Pakistan debut having started the summer playing Australian grade cricket. He took 3-17 in the win against Sydney Thunder last time out.

Adam Zampa: Another two wickets last time out means the spinner has taken eight wickets in his last three matches.

MLS Team Form

Melbourne Stars stormed to the top of the 2019-20 Big Bash League table but then lost their final three matches and again to the Sixers in the Qualifier after being carted for just 99. They rediscovered their form just in time, however, to win The Challenger and reach the final. Marcus Stoinis (83) and Nick Larkin (83*) helped them to 194/2 from their 20 overs, before Haris Rauf’s 3-17 proved key in limiting Sydney Thunder to 166/8 in reply.

Sydney Sixers vs Melbourne Stars Team Form in Last Five Matches

SYS vs MLS Head to Head

This season’s three matches have been notable for different reasons. First, Marcus Stoinis smashed a BBL-record 147* in a total of 219/1 as the Stars won by 44 runs at the MCG. Next, Stoinis scored 62 from 37 balls in a rain-reduced game, but the Stars’ 125/5 from 14 overs was not enough after Moises Henriques had hit 72 from 31 balls in the Sixers’ 143/4.

In the Qualifier, meanwhile, it was the Sixers’ bowlers who thrived. Most notable was fit again Sean Abbott, who took three wickets as the Stars collapsed to 99 all out and a 43-run defeat.

SYS vs MLS Dream11 Prediction

Josh Philippe is 9.5 credits but he has found his best form again at the best possible time. Peter Handscomb has had less impact for the Stars around his international commitments, and Seb Gotch even less still.

Marcus Stoinis is 11 credits but another big innings last time out means he now has 979 points for this season’s BBL. Steve Smith is 10.5 credits, but he is a man for big occasions and this is very much one of those. To keep credits down, meanwhile, Nick Larkin – who starred last time out – and Stars opener Nic Maddinson are both eight credits.

Glenn Maxwell is a top all-rounder but the Stars’ captain may be too expensive at 10.5 credits, particularly if you want the likes of Stoinis, Smith and Haris Rauf too. Instead, Moises Henriques could be the best option at nine credits.

Haris Rauf and Sean Abbott have returned in time to bowl their respective teams into this final. Adam Zampa is also in fine form for the Stars. Josh Hazlewood is available to play in the final too. That leaves eight credits, and therefore a choice between Clint Hinchcliffe and Dan Worrall

Marcus Stoinis can not be ignored. He has been in excellent batting form and is hard to ignore as a top choice for captain. Alternatively, Haris Rauf is going to be key with the ball for the Stars and Sean Abbott likewise for the Sixers.
