Read on for team previews, betting tips, latest odds and match prediction for Sylhet Sixers vs Rangpur Riders, BPL 2019.
David Warner plays his final game for the Sylhet Sixers, having been cleared by the Australian Cricket Board to play the two final games in Sylhet after picking up an elbow injury when these teams last met. He showed no ill effects from the injury as he hit 63 from 43 balls against Dhaka Dynamites. The Sixers replaced Sohail Tanvir with Mohammad Irfan for that game against the Dynamites, while Al-Amin Hossain came in for Mehedi Hasan as they tweaked the dynamic of their bowling attack. The changes did not pay off, however, and could be reversed.
David Warner will be a big loss when he returns home due to the elbow injury he suffered when these two teams last met. The Australian has scored three half-centuries, including scores of 61* and 63 in his last two innings, and will want to sign off with another big score.
Liton Das appears to have rediscovered his best batting form of late too, with 70 against Rangpur Riders when these teams last met in BPL 2019
Nicolas Pooran will want to recapture the form he showed in Dhaka, meanwhile, having scored 41, 52 and 72 in his three innings in the first phase of fixtures. He is yet to repeat that in Sylhet so far.
Taskin Ahmed claimed 2-34 when these teams last met and has ten wickets in the tournament so far, including 4-28 in the win against Chittagong Vikings. Nepalese teenage superstar Sandeep Lamichhane took 1-18 in the win against Rangpur Riders, meanwhile, having started the tournament with 2-16 against Comilla Victorians.
Sylhet Sixers have won just two of their six matches so far, after losing to Dhaka Dynamites last time out for the second time in the tournament. They won one of their three matches in Dhaka, and have won one from three in Sylhet so far too – though that win was against Rangpur Riders when these sides last met.
After being bowled out for 68 on their way to an eight-wicket loss against Comilla Victorians previously, the Sixers were much improved against Rangpur – Liton Das hitting 70 and David Warner 61 not out in a total of 187/5, on their way to a 27-run win.
Warner, despite his elbow injury, then scored 63 from 43 balls in the game against Dhaka that followed, but the total of 158/8 proved well below par. Mohammad Irfan claimed two wickets in reply, but the Dynamites recovered from 37/3 to claim a six-wicket win with 18 balls remaining.
David Warner, Sabbir Rahman, Liton Das, Afif Hossain, Nicolas Pooran, Jaker Ali, Alok Kapali, Sandeep Lamichhane, Mehedi Hasan, Taskin Ahmed, Sohail Tanvir
Big-hitting South African AB de Villiers is expected to join the Rangpur squad for the remainder of the group stage and, after scoring a three-ball duck when he replaced Ravi Bopara to continue his poor batting form in this tournament, it is likely to be England batsman Alex Hales who makes way.
The arrival of AB de Villiers will add even more firepower to the Rangpur Riders’ batting line-up, with the South African one of the finest limited-overs batsmen in world cricket, even after his international retirement.
His compatriot Rilee Rossouw has already led the way with three half-centuries so far, including 58 when these teams met three days ago. His last five innings have brought scores of 76*, 20, 83, 44* and 58.
Chris Gayle has not reached the same heights so far, but his potential for an explosive innings should never be forgotten. Even in the twilight of his career, he has enjoyed some huge innings across the globe.
With the ball, Mashrafe Mortaza has taken ten so far, including 4-11 in the win against Comilla Victorians. Shafiul Islam took 3-31 when these teams last met, meanwhile, and is now the Riders’ leading wicket-taker with 12 so far – seven of which have come in the last three matches.
Rangpur Riders have lost their last three matches in a row, having previously bounced back from an opening-day defeat with wins against Khulna Titans and Comilla Victorians. The losing streak started against Dhaka Dynamites despite having been well placed in reply to the Dynamites’ 183/9 thanks to Rilee Rossouw’s 44-ball 83. Late wickets cost them as they finished on 181/9.
Next up, the were chasing just 136 to beat Rajshahi Kings but struggled to keep up with the run rate in the middle overs and finished on 130/6. And the losing streak continued when these teams last met – replying to the Sixers’ 187/5, Rangpur lost early wickets and, despite another Rossouw half-century, they finished short on 160/6.
Rilee Rossouw, Chris Gayle, Mohammad Mithun, Mehedi Maruf, AB de Villiers, Shafiul Islam, Mashrafe Mortaza, Nahidul Islam, Farhad Reza, Benny Howell, Sohag Gazi
Sylhet Sixers’ victory when these teams last met was their first in three previous matches against the Rangpur Riders. In 2017, Chris Gayle scored a half-century, including five sixes, in a total of 169/7 as the Riders claimed a seven-run win despite Sabbir Rahman scoring 70 in reply, before chasing 173/5 to claim a four-wicket win in the second fixture.
Sylhet claimed their first defeat of Rangpur last time out, however. Liton Das (70) and David Warner (61*) helped them to 187/5 and, after reducing the Riders to 11/3, not even a Rilee Rossouw could lift them back up to the run rate – they finished 27 runs short on 160/6.
After beating Rangpur Riders last time they met, Sylhet Sixers will want to sign off from this period of fixtures in Sylhet with another win – especially with David Warner set to depart after this game.
Final Verdict: Back Sylhet Sixers to beat Rangpur Riders
