Sri Lanka vs Australia: Visitors to Start as Favorites

Australia are in Sri Lanka for over a month-long tour consisting of three tests, five ODIs and two T20Is. The first test begins on the 26th of July at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium. Play is scheduled to commence at 10 AM local time. While the hosts are still reeling from a horrible tour of England, the visitors will look to start off with a win in their quest to retain the no. 1 test ranking.

Venue and Toss

Four test matches have been played at this ground till now with the first three being affected heavily by rain and ending in a draw. The fourth and the most recent match last year in July was won by Pakistan after they won the toss and elected to bowl. Since the wicket tends to produce better scores after first innings, the toss-winning captain may want to field first and restrict the opposition to around 250-270.

Sri Lanka's best chance in this contest would be to win the toss and then bowl Australia out for not more than 250. But if Australia win the toss, a Sri Lankan defeat could likely be on the cards.

If SL Bat First

Predicted Score: Around 270

With so much of inexperience around, their batting is going to depend largely on the shoulders of Angelo Mathews and wicketkeeper-batsman Dinesh Chandimal. The two are the most experienced batsmen in this current side and they will have to fire each time Sri Lanka bats. Kusal Mendis is coming from an impressive tour of England and the hosts will want these three to score runs if they are to get anywhere close to 300.

The Sri Lankan openers are likely to face Mitchell Starc first up. The speedster has made a decent comeback in test cricket picking up four wickets in the warm-up match, and he will be Australia's best bet to take quick wickets. The spin combo of O'Keefe and Lyon can be threatening on this pitch and could give the batsmen a hard time at the crease. There are chances that Sri Lanka might not even cross 250 if these three Australian bowlers are on top of their game.

If AUS Bat First

Predicted Score: Around 350

David Warner has recovered from his finger injury and is likely to open the batting alongside Khawaja. Joe Burns made 170 and 65 in Australia's last test against New Zealand while Smith and Voges also played big knocks in the same series. Except Warner who can be a bit tentative on such a surface, Australia's batting looks solid enough and that total of 350 shouldn't be far from their grasp if they don’t give away too many wickets at the start.

Sri Lanka have lost their three frontline bowlers in Dhammika Prasad, Jeffrey Vandersay and Dushmantha Chameera due to injury while Shaminda Eranga is serving suspension for illegal bowling action. Their absence is going to put enormous pressure on Herath and Mathews. These two will be their main weapon with the ball and they will need to take wickets if Sri Lanka are to keep Australia below the predicted score.

SL vs AUS Head-to-Head Record

Australia have so far played 13 tests in Sri Lanka against the hosts. Six of them were won by the visitors, six were drawn and one was won by the home team back in 1999. Seven of the last 10 tests between the two sides have been won by Australia with the rest resulting in a draw. The only game between them at this venue was played in 2011 which also ended in a draw.

Our Prediction

Australia will be coming into this match with seven victories in their last 10 tests. Sri Lanka, on the contrary, have six defeats in their last 10 tests and are coming from a winless tour of England. In spite of making drastic changes to their squad and trying out several team combinations, the Lankans are yet to find a way to get back on track in the longest format of the game.

Though Sri Lanka may feel a little comfortable playing at home, injuries to most of their key players will make it even harder for them to overcome a strong Australian side. So we're going to back Australia here to win the first test and take a 1-0 lead in the series.
