As we saw in the WT20I series, although with far less strength in depth or big game experience, Sri Lanka Women gave a good account of themselves in the opening WODI. They batted for 48.2 of their 50 allocated overs and posted 171 in spite of opener and captain, Chamari Athapathuthu contributing only 2 runs from 8 balls. Opener, Hasini Perera, hit 37 with middle-order batter Nilakshi de Silva top scoring with 43. The Sri Lankans then kept India batting for 38 overs and had them in trouble at 17-2. Inoka Ranaweera stood out for the home side with figures of 4-39 including the wickets of Shafali Verma and Harmanpreet Kaur.

India Women will be pleased to have returned to winning ways after losing the final WT20I game last week. A change in format is never the easiest thing to do, but India will be looking for a far more polished performance in Kandy this time out. With the bat, they will be disappointed that none of their star players were able to post a half century but they will be pleased that the likes of Shafali Verma, Harmanpreet Kaur and Harleen Deol got valuable time at the crease. With the ball, Deepti Sharma took 3-25 and Renuka Singh Thakur 3-29, but they will look to dismiss Sri Lanka earlier than in the penultimate over like we saw on Friday.
