Sri Lanka have received a huge setback ahead of this second test as their captain Dinesh Chandimal has been ruled out of the remaining two games due to a groin injury he had picked up during the Galle test. The hosts have added uncapped all-rounder Charith Asalanka in their squad as Chandimal's replacement while appointing Suranga Lakmal as the interim skipper. Meanwhile, spinner Akila Dananjaya has been reported for suspicious bowling action and he will have to undergo some tests in two weeks time. However, he has been permitted to continue to play until then. Rangana Herath bowed out of international cricket after the last game and left-arm chinaman Lakshan Sandakan seems a likely candidate to replace him in the playing eleven.

Dimuth Karunaratne is among the world's top ten test batsmen. The opener could score only 30 runs in the first test and Sri Lanka will need their best test batsman to come good at Pallekele. Angelo Mathews struck half-centuries in both the innings and the absence of Dinesh Chandimal makes him the team's biggest hope in the middle order. Kusal Mendis has a hundred from four test innings at this ground and he too is a key man in this batting line-up. Sri Lanka's bowling will rely mainly on Suranga Lakmal, Dilruwan Perera and Lakshan Sandakan. Lakmal will be spearheading the pace attack and it will be up to him to provide the early breakthroughs. Dilruwan starred with the ball last time with a match-haul of seven wickets and he together with Sandakan who has 12 wickets in 2 tests at this ground will be the major threats among the spinners.

Meanwhile, England have released batsman Ollie Pope from the squad to play for the Lions in the UAE. With the wicket at Pallekele expected to be more welcoming for the seam bowlers, the visitors may be tempted to play Stuart Broad in place of new-comer Jack Leach.
