After the conclusion of the IT20 series on Saturday, Sri Lanka and Australia switch to ODIs with the first of five games in this format taking place at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium in Kandy. Sri Lanka won their last ODI series 2-1 against Zimbabwe in January. Australia lost 2-1 in Pakistan during March and April. Read on as we preview this opening match of the series. This ODI begins at 14:30 local time on Tuesday.
Sri Lanka were strong in the ODI series against Zimbabwe in January and they will have taken plenty of confidence from winning the final IT20. However, Australia in this format will be an even tougher proposition.
Australia have excellent strength in depth in ODIs as they do in the other formats also. After winning the IT20 series, they will fancy their chances of going 1-0 up in this series.

Sri Lanka won the toss and chose to bat first in the last ODI at this venue in January. They went on to win the match by 184 runs and we predict that both captains will want to bat first ahead of this game.
There will certainly be plenty of opportunities for the ball to spin in this game and we expect the spinners on both sides to enjoy the conditions. A par score will be in the region of 300 - 310.

This is Sri Lanka’s first ODI series since Mickey Arthur departed as coach with former England Head Coach Chris Silverwood taking over. The squad is fairly similar to their last ODI and we do not expect many changes from the side which beat Zimbabwe by 184 runs at the start of the year.
Sri Lanka have won three of their last four ODIs with wins against Zimbabwe and South Africa all on home soil.

Mitchell Starc and Mitchell Marsh have both been ruled out of this series with finger and calf injuries respectively. Their bowling stocks will also be depleted by the news that all-rounder Cameron Green is not fit enough to bowl yet but he is expected to play as a batter.
Australia are looking to avoid their third successive defeat in this format after losing to Pakistan by 9 and 6 wickets in their last ODIs in Lahore.
