South Africa Team News & Playing 11

SA Team News

South Africa have named an 18-man squad for the T20I series, with Faf du Plessis set to captain the team for the first match only before JP Duminy takes on the role. Duminy and Aiden Markram could feature in the first match too, after both arrived for the latter part of the ODI series. Markram is one of three players bidding for a first T20I cap, with Anrich Nortje and wicket-keeper Sinethemba Qeshile the other two. As with Du Plessis, Quinton de Kock, Kagiso Rabada and Lungi Ngidi will all only feature in the first match – meaning Nortje and Qeshile are likely to step in when they depart.

SA Key Players

Aiden Markram hit an unbeaten 67 in the final ODI, having hit some brilliant form in the Momentum One Day cup to earn a late call-up. Translating that form into the SA vs SL T20 series could result in him snatching a World Cup place.

Captain Faf du Plessis top-scored in the only one of the three T20s he played against Pakistan, meanwhile, and hit 78 as he boosted his average to 36.27 in T20is. It was his eighth T20i century.

Rassie van der Dussen has made a name for himself in T20 cricket, meanwhile. Franchise success across the globe brought him to the South African selectors’ attention and he has an average of 31 and a T20i strike rate of 133.62 so far. He hit two useful 40s in the series win against Pakistan.

With the ball, Beuran Hendricks took eight wickets in three matches against Pakistan when the two teams last met.

SA Team Form

South Africa bounced back from defeat in Sri Lanka by winning five T20Is in a row across three series. They beat Zimbabwe and Australia prior to winning their first two matches of their three-match series with Pakistan.

Defeat to Pakistan in the final game blotted the copybook slightly but could not prevent a series win. Faf du Plessis (78) and Reeza Hendricks (74) led them to 192/6 and a six-run win in the first game, while David Miller’s unbeaten 65 helped them to a seven-run win in the second.

They failed to chase 169 to win the final game, but there were still plenty of highlights – not least Beuran Hendricks’ 4-14 with the ball.

South Africa Predicted Playing 11

Quinton de Kock, Reeza Hendricks, Aiden Markram, Faf du Plessis, Rassie van der Dussen, JP Duminy, Andile Phehlukwayo, Beuran Hendricks, Lungi Ngidi, Kagiso Rabada, Imran Tahir

Sri Lanka Team News & Playing 11

SL Team News

Lasith Maliga captains a squad which sees returns to T20 international cricket for Jeffrey Vandersay and Suranga Lakmal. Akila Dananjaya is also back for his first T20Is since his bowling ban. Angelo Mathews and Dinesh Chandimal remain in the international wilderness.

SL Key Players

Thisara Perera has been one of the batsmen to watch in T20 franchise tournaments around the globe, with his late-order hitting – he has a strike rate of 154.91 in T20 international cricket, while he has a habit of weighing in with some useful wickets too.

Isuru Udana, who showed flashes of great form in the ODIs, is another to have been sought after for various franchises thanks to his death bowling and wicket-taking ability.

When it comes to death bowling, however, Lasith Malinga is the stand-out – the veteran swing bowler needs six wickets for 100 in T20i cricket.

Other batsmen to watch, however, includes Kusal Mendis. He scored two half-centuries in the ODI series and is another with a big strike rate in T20 cricket.

SL Team Form

Sri Lanka have only played twice since these sides last met in T20 cricket, playing one-off matches against England and New Zealand and losing both.

They were all out for 157 in reply to 187/8 against England despite Thisara Perera’s half-century, while he top-scored again with 43 out of 144 all out as they lost to New Zealand by 35 runs.

Sri Lanka Predicted Playing 11

Niroshan Dickwella, Sandeep Samarawickrama, Kusal Mendis, Thisara Perera, Priyamal Perera, Akila Dananjaya, Dhananjaya de Silva, Isuru Udana, Lasith Malinga, Kasun Rajitha, Lakshan Sandakan

South Africa vs Sri Lanka Head to Head

South Africa and Sri Lanka have played ten T20 internationals against each other since the format was first introduced with five wins apiece. The last three have all gone Sri Lanka’s way, however - claiming a 2-1 series win in South Africa two years ago and their one-off win on home soil in August.

In the most recent meeting, Lakshan Sandakan (3-19), Dhananjaya de Silva (2-22) and Akila Dananjaya (2-15) helped bowl South Africa out for just 98. Sri Lanka lost wickets in reply, but still had four overs to spare as they wrapped up a three-wicket win.

South Africa vs Sri Lanka Betting Odds

After their dominant form in the ODI series, South Africa are big favourites to carry that on in the shortest format too. Bet365 are offering a best price of 1.36 on a South Africa win, while Betway have priced the hosts at 1.33. Sri Lanka are 3.20 to win with both.

Quinton de Kock was in superb form in the ODI series and will want to make an impression in the only T20 game he will be playing – he is set to be rested for the remainder of the series with the IPL next on the cards for him. He is 3.75 to be South Africa’s top batsman with Bet365, while Faf du Plessis – who is in the same situation – is 4.00.

For Sri Lanka, there was very little to shout about with the bat in the ODI series though Kusal Mendis at least showed some form. He is 3.75 to be Sri Lanka’s top batsman with Bet365 while Thisara Perera – who has top-scored in each of their last two matches despite batting down the order – is a tempting 11.00.

Pacemen Kagiso Rabada and Lungi Ngidi will also only play the first match for South Africa. Ngidi is 4.00 to be their top bowler, while Imran Tahir’s leg-spin is 3.50.

🏆 South Africa vs Sri Lanka Prediction

While Sri Lanka have a good recent record in this fixture, they were beaten comfortably in the ODIs and this is a chance four South Africa to continue to drive home their advantage.
