Who will win South Africa vs England, 4th Test 2020?
England are looking to seal a test series win against South Africa when they take their 2-1 lead into the fourth and final test in Johannesburg. The match, at the Wanderers, takes place between January 24 and January 28 and is scheduled to start at 10:00 every day.
England have come from behind to lead the series 2-1, dominating in Port Elizabeth as Ollie Pope and Ben Stokes hit centuries to lay the foundations for an innings win in England’s 500th overseas test.
South Africa, as a result, have lost five of their last six test matches and have plenty to prove in this final game of the series as a result of their batting falling so short so far. They will have to do without paceman Kagiso Rabada, however – suspended after being handed a demerit point for his passionate celebration of Joe Root’s wicket in the last test.

South Africa Team News & Playing 11
SA Team News
Kagiso Rabada is suspended for the fourth test after receiving another demerit point for his celebration of Joe Root’s wicket last time out. South Africa are already without Aiden Markram, who fractured his finger in the first test. Beuran Hendricks and Andile Phehlukwayo are among the options to replace him after linking back up with the squad, while Temba Bavuma has made his case for a batting place after hitting 180 for Highveld Lions in his most recent first-class innings.
SA Key Players
Quinton de Kock: The wicket-keeper-batsman has scored three half-centuries in the series so far, including his 95 in the first innings of the first test, and may feel he still has a point to prove after his wild shot sparked a batting collapse in the second test.
Faf du Plessis: Replaced as ODI captain, Du Plessis remains the test captain and needs to lead from the front after failing to make his mark with the bat in this tournament. He still averages 40.23 in test cricket after nine centuries and 21 half-centuries in 110 innings.
Vernon Philander: Ripped through the England batting in the opening test and without Kagiso Rabada, South Africa need the all-rounder to fire again as he bids to add to his 222 test wickets.
SA Team Form
After three crushing defeats in India to start their inaugural ICC World Test Championship campaign, South Africa’s two defeats in this series mean they have now lost five of their last six tests. Scores of 223, 248, 209 and 237 in their last four innings have simply not been up to standard and England have taken advantage. Despite looking so convincing in the opening game, winning by 107 runs, South Africa have lost by 189 runs and an innings and 53 runs in the two matches since.
South Africa Predicted Playing 11
Dean Elgar, Pieter Malan, Faf du Plessis, Temba Bavuma, Rassie van der Dussen, Quinton de Kock, Vernon Philander, Keshav Maharaj, Anrich Nortje, Beuran Hendricks, Dane Paterson
England Team News & Playing 11
ENG Team News
Jofra Archer could be in line for a return for England, which raises the tantalising prospect of him bowling in tandem with Mark Wood for the first time in test cricket. England’s fast-bowling duo bowled together at the World Cup, but Archer has missed the last two test with an elbow injury. He looks fit to step back in but the question mark is over Wood, who may not be risked for back-to-back tests. James Anderson and Rory Burns are definitely out.
ENG Key Players
Ben Stokes: Fulfilling his potential as one of the world’s finest multi-format cricketers, he scored his ninth test century last time out and he now has 288 runs and six wickets in the series. He passed 4,000 test runs last time out and he maintains a perfect all-rounder’s ratio with his test averages.
Ollie Pope: Starred with the bat last time out to announce his potential for England, hitting his maiden test century (135*) to follow-up his unbeaten half-century in the previous test.
Stuart Broad: Leads England’s wicket-taking charts, though only he and Sam Curran have bowled in every innings so far. Nevertheless, he has 12 wickets at an average of 18.25 and has now moved to 483 wickets in test cricket.
ENG Team Form
England lost against New Zealand in their mini-series before this one, and lost the opening test too as their poor away form continued. That changed with victory in the second test, however – Dom Sibley’s second-innings century turning the game on its head before Quinton de Kock’s poor shot sparked a batting collapse in which Ben Stokes took three wickets and England sealed a 189-run win.
Stokes then hit 120 and shared a 203-run partnership with Ollie Pope (135*) as England posted 499/9 declared last time out. In reply, Dom Bess’ maiden test five-wicket haul helped bowl South Africa out for 209 in the first innings, and Joe Root was the surprise bowling hero with four wickets as they dismissed the Proteas for 237 following-on; England won by an innings and 53 runs.
England Predicted Playing 11
Zak Crawley, Dominic Sibley, Joe Denly, Joe Root (c), Ben Stokes, Ollie Pope, Jos Buttler (wk), Sam Curran, Dom Bess, Jofra Archer, Stuart Broad
