South Africa Team News & Playing 11

SA Team News

Dale Steyn missed the opening match against England as a result of the shoulder injury he aggravated at the IPL. Coach Otis Gibson says South Africa will not be rushing the paceman back either, so Dwaine Pretorius may continue against Bangladesh. Aiden Markram was preferred to David Miller in the first game, but that change could be reversed as South Africa look to improve on their batting performance after their opening defeat.

SA Key Players

Quinton de Kock continued the good form he showed at the IPL when he scored 68 in the first match against England. It was his dismissal which sparked South Africa’s batting collapse.

Rassie van der Dussen also scored a half-century in the opening game – his fifth ODI 50 in just nine innings in the format. He went into the tournament after finishing the CSA T20 Challenge in fine form too.

Captain Faf du Plessis fell cheaply against England but his quality with the bat is not in doubt either – he has 32 50s and 11 centuries in his ODI career and hit 88 in the warm-up win against Sri Lanka.

With the ball, Kagiso Rabada led the pace attack in Dale Steyn’s absence and the fifth-highest ranked bowler in the world ODI rankings claimed two wickets. Imran Tahir, who is one place ahead of Rabada in the world rankings, caused problems with his leg spin too – opening the bowling and picking up a wicket in his first over.

SA Team Form

South Africa’s opening-day defeat to England ended a good run of form in one-day cricket for the Proteas. After restricting England to 311/8, they failed to take advantage of Quinton de Kock’s 68 and Rassie van der Dussen’s 50 as they collapsed to 207 all out.

They had previously been in excellent form ahead of the tournament, winning their only completed warm-up game against Sri Lanka after posting 338/7 and bowling the Lions out for 251. They also whitewashed Sri Lanka with a 5-0 series win before that.

South Africa Predicted Playing 11

Quinton de Kock, Hashim Amla, Faf du Plessis, Rassie van der Dussen, JP Duminy, David Miller, Dwaine Pretorius, Andile Phehlukwayo, Kagiso Rabada, Lungi Ngidi, Imran Tahir

Bangladesh Team News & Playing 11

BAN Team News

Bangladesh have plenty of injury concerns ahead of their World Cup campaign opener against South Africa. Tamim Iqbal is the latest to join the injury club after being hit on the wrist during Friday's training session. The extent of his injury is not known as of yet which means Liton Das could be opening the batting with Soumya Sarkar in case Tamim is declared unfit for this game. Meanwhile, Bangladesh are also monitoring the fitness of Mohammad Saifuddin, Mahmudullah, Mashrafe Mortaza and Mustafizur Rahman, all of whom are recovering from their respective injuries.

BAN Key Players

Soumya Sarkar heads into the World Cup 2019 in great batting form – following domestic success (including a double-century) with Abahani Ltd. Sarkar scored three half-centuries in three games against the West Indies in Dublin.

Tamim Iqbal (if he recovers from his injury) will partner him at the top of the order as he looks to add to his 11 ODI centuries and 46 50s in a career that has pushed him to the forefront of Bangladesh’s rise to the top.

Shakib Al Hasan has, like Tamim, been central to that success and the all-rounder will have a key role to play both with the bat and his spin bowling.

Captain Mashrafe Mortaza’s pace has slowed as he enters his final World Cup, meanwhile, but his bowling is no less effective – as he proved with six wickets in the Ireland Tri-Nation Series.

BAN Team Form

Bangladesh lost their only warm-up match against India after their first, against Pakistan, fell victim to the rain. The Tigers had otherwise geared up for the tournament in good form, however – bouncing back from a 3-0 series defeat in New Zealand by beating Ireland and West Indies to win the Ireland Tri-Nation Series.

Bangladesh won all four of their completed matches, with Soumya Sarkar passing 50 in all three innings he batted and Shakib Al Hasan and Tamim Iqbal also gearing up in good form.

Captain Mashrafe Mortaza took six wickets, meanwhile, as did Mustafizur Rahman, as the Tigers reached the final and then, in a rain-affected game, chased 210 in 22.5 overs to win by five wickets on the DLS method.

Bangladesh Predicted Playing 11

Tamim Iqbal/Liton Das, Soumya Sarkar, Shakib Al Hasan, Mushfiqur Rahim, Mohammad Mithun, Mahmudullah, Mossadek Hossain, Mohammad Saifuddin, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Mashrafe Mortaza, Mustafizur Rahman
