  • Perth Scorchers are bottom of the Big Bash League points table having won three of their first nine matches.
  • One of their six defeats was in the reverse of this fixture, in Sydney, when Ashton Turner's 60 from 36 balls almost launched an improbable comeback but they finished 141/5 in reply to 142/6 to lose by just one run - despite having been 54/5 after 11.1 overs.
  • Sydney Thunder go into this game on the back of a defeat to Melbourne Renegades as Shane Watson was unable to replicate his century from the game before.

Perth Scorchers Team News & Playing 11

PRS Team News

Perth Scorchers’ bad form has not been helped by the fact they had so many players away on international duty. It is a huge boost to them as a team, if not for the players themselves, that they have nobody in the Australia test squad to face Sri Lanka – that means Mitchell Marsh, Shaun Marsh, Jhye Richardson and Jason Behrendorff all return and Ashton Turner remains available too. They have lost English all-rounder David Willey, however, who has been forced to return home due to a shoulder injury. Ashton Agar is also out for the remainder of this season’s Big Bash due to a dislocated finger.

PRS Key Players

With their international players all available again, Perth Scorchers have plenty of batting talent to call upon, to add to those already showing form with the bat. Ashton Turner is in the latter category – he has 302 runs from nine innings, with the turning point in his season having been the reverse fixture against Sydney Thunder when he hit 60 not out from 36 balls.

Cameron Bancroft, back from his ball tampering ban, scored 59 against the Melbourne Stars and an unbeaten 87 against Sydney Sixers, meanwhile, meaning he has 191 runs from six innings despite a duck last time out.

Those two will now be joined in the batting line-up by the Marsh brothers, who have plenty to prove after being dropped from the Australia test squad. Mitchell has hit six half-centuries and claimed 42 wickets in his T20 career though, while Shaun was in good form in the recent Australia vs India ODI series and can count himself unlucky to be out of test favour. He hit 54, 131 and 39 in the three ODIs against India and this is his first T20 appearance of the season.

With the ball, Jason Behrendorff returns after taking eight wickets in his first six Big Bash appearances before the ODI series. Against India, he took 2-39 and 1-52 in his two matches. Nathan Coulter-Nile has nine wickets – and also hit a handy unbeaten 31 against Hobart Hurricanes with the bat – while Andrew Tye has eight wickets in his last three games to remind everyone how he has built such a reputation in the Big Bash. That includes 4-18 against the Melbourne Stars. Finally, Jhye Richardson is also back from Australia duty. He took seven wickets in five games for the Scorchers before departing, and then starred with 4-26 in the first ODI on his way to six wickets in the series.

PRS Team Form

Perth Scorchers had got back on track with two consecutive wins before losing to league leaders Hobart Hurricanes last time out. After three defeats in a row following their only other win – in which they bowled Adelaide Strikers out for 88 – Andrew Tye’s bowling helped them to victory against Melbourne Stars.Tye took 4-18 to restrict the Star to 146/6 and Cameron Bancroft hit 59 from 42 balls in the reply, as the Scorchers claimed a six-wicket win with 2.2 overs remaining.

Next up, replying to 177/5 against the Sydney Sixers, Bancroft hit an unbeaten 87 from 61 balls to lead the Scorchers to a seven-wicket win with seven balls to spare.

He could not continue that form, however, falling cheaply as Sam Whiteman’s 68 lifted the Scorchers to 177/9 against the Hurricanes. They took Hobart to the final over in the reply – and looked to be on top too – but James Faulkner hit two sixes and a four off the first three balls to give the Hurricanes the 16 runs they needed and a four-wicket win.

Sydney Thunder Team News & Playing 11

SYT Team News

Sydney Thunder’s internationals, Usman Khawaja and Pat Cummins, have not featured for them this season anyway, so there Australian test call-up will not affect them too much. Likewise Kurtis Patterson, who impressed with the Cricket Australia XI, has not been selected in the Big Bash this season. Jason Sangha returned from the CA XI to face Melbourne Renegades and score an unbeaten half-century and it could be an unchanged team who face Perth despite the defeat in that game.

SYT Key Players

Shane Watson scored 68 in the win against Adelaide Strikers before his 62-ball 100 against Brisbane Heat, stepping up after Jos Buttler departed for England duty.

He fell cheaply last time out – who scored 42 last they played Perth Scorchers – hit 52 against Melbourne Renegades and Jason Sangha scored 54 not out. The latter’s run rate was not high enough, however, as the teenager failed to replicate his unbeaten 63 on debut against Melbourne Stars just before Christmas.

Anton Devicich is the direct replacement for Buttler, and he has contributed a couple of useful scores since coming in, as well as being another option with the ball. It was with his bowling he impressed most with Northern Knights in New Zealand’s Super Smash.

Daniel Sams claimed 3-29 last time out, meanwhile. He has 14 wickets in this year’s tournament, including a stunning 3-5 in the win against Melbourne Stars. He has also scored some useful runs – 155 in total from nine innings.Elsewhere in the bowling line-up, Fawad Ahmed has taken 11 wickets and Gurinder Sandhu moved to seven with his 3-23 last time out.

SYT Team Form

Sydney Thunder have only won one of their last five matches, though they were unfortunate to have one of those games – the match with Brisbane Heat – abandoned due to a power failure when they were well on top. Shane Watson scored 100 from 62 balls in a total of 186/4 in that game, and the Heat were 10/2 after three overs when the game was called off.

It meant they could not bounce back from their first win in three games, having thrashed Adelaide Strikers beforehand. Watson hit 68 from 40 balls in a total of 168/6 and Arjun Nair’s 3-12 led the way as the Strikers were bowled out for 97.
Last time out, meanwhile, they were set 153 to beat the Melbourne Renegades after Gurinder Sandhu’s 3-23 and Daniel Sams’ 3-29 with the ball. Callum Ferguson and Jason Sangha both hit half-centuries in reply, but the run rate was too slow and they succumbed to a 12-run defeat

Sydney Thunder Predicted Playing 11

Anton Devcich, Shane Watson, Callum Ferguson, Jason Sangha, Daniel Sams, Jay Lenton, Chris Jordan, Chris Green, Arjun Nair, Gurinder Sandhu, Fawad Ahmed

Perth Scorchers vs Sydney Thunder Head to Head

Sydney’s win in the reverse fixture was their second in a row against Perth Scorchers – having only met once last season – but only their third in eight games overall against the Scorchers. This year’s match at Sydney saw Jos Buttler hit 55 and Callum Ferguson 42 in a total of 142/6 and the Scorchers were 54/5 after 11.1 overs at one poin tin the reply, as Fawad Ahmed claimed two wickets. Ashton Tuner hit 60 from 36 balls to launch an unlikely comeback, but it came up just short – the Thunder holding on for a one-run win.

Last season’s game, meanwhile, was similarly close. Usman Khawaja scored 85 from 51 balls as the Thunder posted 175/4 from their 20 overs. The Scorchers were 35/4 in reply, but Cameron Bancroft (75*) and Hilton Cartwright (65*) led the recovery – only to finish on 172/4, three runs short.

Perth Scorchers vs Sydney Thunder Betting Odds

With their international stars back, and Sydney Thunder lacking form, Perth Scorchers are favourites to win this one. They are 1.66 with Bet365 and 1.62 with Betfair, whereas the latter have Sydney Thunder as high as 2.25 to win.

The return of Shaun Marsh could be key for the Scorchers, after his good form in Australia’s ODI series against India. He is 4.00 with Betfair to be their top batsman. Cameron Bancroft is back in form and can be backed at 3.50, while Ashton Turner top-scored for the Scorchers in the reverse fixture and is 4.50.

For the Thunder, if they want to upset the odds they will need Shane Watson back to the form he showed against Adelaide Strikers and Brisbane Heat. He is 3.30 with Betfair to top score for the Thunder.

Perth have not just got their best batsmen back, however – they also have their star bowlers. Andrew Tye was never away either and, after eight wickets in his last three games, he is 3.50 with Betfair to be their top bowler.

🏆 Perth Scorchers vs Sydney Thunder Prediction

Perth Scorchers have their star men back and can take full advantage as a result, against a Sydney Thunder side who have fell away after a bright start to the tournament.
